Finder equivalent of Windows Explorer's (not IE) address bar
my apologies if this is the wrong place for my question. i've also tried searching the forums and various discussion threads but i cannot find the answer.
can someone please tell me what the windows explorer address bar equivalent in finder? thanks.
imac 24" 2.8 GHz and macbook 13" 2.16 GHz,
Mac OS X (10.5),
i only come here to complain
Windows Explorer is the equivalent of Finder. Windows Explorer has an address bar(similar to the address bar in web browsers) where you can type the path of a certain location. For example I can type in "\\server\share\..." and Windows Explorer will immediately open that location and show the contents of that share (or folder). It's a manual but quicker way of getting to a particular location in the hard drive or network folder instead of navigating and clicking around.
I think I know what you're asking (switched from PCs in 2003). As far as I know there's no direct equivalent.
You can see a breadcrumb version of the path, but you can't type into it, or you can hit Shift-Command-G to type a path, but it's not visible all the time.
I've tried Path Finder before, but I don't think that even has what you're looking for. I don't think there's really an equivalent on the mac for things like that, since Finder was originally totally spatial in nature and has always tended more towards graphical solutions than text-based ones. In OS X they made it more browser-ish (to the dismay of many), but with one foot still firmly in the spatial world (to the dismay of others).
I don't it's possible to do exactly what you're asking to do (although I admit, I'm not an Apple Genious™, but I am a thinker)
thanks for all the replies. what i try to connect to are various servers and shares and folders all over the network in the office. i guess there really isn't a clear-cut equivalent but it's ok. the long way is better than no way. i think windows explorer beats mac's finder hands down. other than that mac is pretty ok. many thanks again.
There is a way to get something similar to type in a server name. If you hit the command-k in the finder, it will bring up a "connect to server" dialog box. You can type in your SMB share URL, but remember that windows uses backslashes "\" and mac uses forward slashes "/" so you would type "smb://fileserver/sharename" to connect to your share. It will ask you to authenticate, allowing you to save your username and password for the share in your keychain.
thanks for your reply. i realized that a few days ago and that's what i've been doing. its still not as good as windows explorer but it will have to do. thanks again. i should really mark this thread as solved so no one will waste anymore time answering my question.
