Problems in waking from sleep

I have installed Leopard without any problem, but I have noticed a problem that recurred twice: my MBP no waking up from sleep when one or more firewire HDs are attached.

Is anyone having the same issue and is there a fix?

MBP2.4GHz, Mac OS X (10.5)

Hi Ghettochild,

Thanks for your reply.

In response, my coming up with "far fetched ideas" is based upon

1. Karl Popper's +The Logic of Scientific Discovery+
2. my experience as a software technical support rep (not Apple)
3. my experience as a software quality assurance analyst (not Apple)

We need to rule out all other possibilities, especially the ones perceived as "far fetched." It's like double-checking to make sure the reason your car doesn't start is because the battery is dead or the gas tank is empty.

Is your friend an employee at an Apple Store's Genius Bar? If so, very good! Otherwise, they are the guys who need to see your symptom. Just like you want to submit the problem through Apple's feedback link, you want to show staff members at the Genius Bar.

Again, I too am frustrated and eager to solve this problem. We need to show it to Genius Bar staff members.

Hi Slexus,

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Can you repeat the same steps (putting your MBP to sleep and waking it) after booting up into Leopard's guest account (or into a new user account that you create) and see whether the symptoms go away?

Have you inspected the system.log entries corresponding to the date/time when your MBP showed the symptoms?

Have you seen Apple's knowledge base article on sleep vs. deep sleep (aka hibernate)?

Apple just posted an update for MacBook Pros that fixes the keyboard issues that people have been having under Leopard. I personally haven't experienced any of these, thankfully, but (and I may be naive here) the keyboards in MacBook Pros are technically connected through the same interface USB ports use. Hopefully this fixes the issue, I've got my USB cable plugged in again and will update you guys if anything changes.

I strongly recommend that users experiencing these wake-from-sleep issues show and report them to a Genius Bar staff member if you live near to an Apple Store.

Ask the staff member to give you a case number.

This is like reporting the problem to Apple through the feedback mechanism.

Yesterday, a Genius Bar employee did this for me. He said that, by doing this, other Genius Bar employees at the same Apple Store and others will have access to the description of the symptoms.

+If enough users do this, the employees can escalate the problem on our behalf.+

After discussing this scenario with a Genius Bar staff member yesterday, I am less certain than before that the wake from sleep problem is a Leopard "bug" per se.

If it were, then all Leopard-running Macs +including the ones at all Apple Stores+ should be showing the symptom. This is far from the case.

The same logic leads me to feel less certain than before that hardware alone (e.g., USB cable; video card; RAM) is the culprit. If it were, then the problem should happen to each and every Leopard-running Mac that's connected to a 20 inch Cinema Display's USB cable. We can test this by asking Genius Bar staff members to connect in-store units and see whether the symptoms occur.

I am more inclined to think that the problem is an interaction between Unix (since Ubuntu also shows similar wake-from-sleep symptoms), hardware, and third party software. If so, it will be tricky for Apple alone to track down the relevant code in Leopard and apply a fix single-handedly.

I am unfortunately joining the list of those with sleep problems in Leopard.
This never occurred with multiple versions of Tiger.
Removing the power management plist file seemed to help briefly - or perhaps the machine was not in deep sleep, but the problem has returned. The problem is as others noted: when machine has been asleep, hitting the space bar starts the wakeup sequence but my screens stay dark and then the fans go into overdrive. I use the power-on button to do a hard shutdown.

I waited several months before switching to Leopard but I see I did not wait long enough.
This is very disappointing. I now dare not upgrade my or my wife's laptops to Leopard until this problem is resolved. In the meantime, I will no longer sleep my desktop Mac, and my MacBook Pro will stay with Tiger for the foreseeable future.

This is the sort of problem I expect with PCs.
