Time Machine Error

I am using Time Machine to back up my 24" iMac to a dedicated 500GB LaCie Quadra.
My first backup completed OK but subsequent backups fail. I get an alert Time Machine Error - Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup directory.
I have repaired Permissions and run Disk Utility.
In desperation, I reformatted to Lacie, set up Time Machine again and re-ran the backup with the same result.
Has anyone else experienced this error and can anyone assist with a solution.

I am having the same trouble. It is just backing up remarkably slow, nowhere near the theoretical 400 mbps. Yeah, I understand it will probably never get to the theoretical amount, but still, it is ridiculously slow.

I also got the error saying that it could not complete, so only 8-9 GB is backed up. Now I am waiting for TM to do one of its hourly backups, and so far it has been Preparing for 5 minutes.

I am having the exact same problem, but with a WD 1TB drive. I have it partitioned for back. I keep getting the exact error message after about 2 hours. I did an upgrade rather than an A+I. Right now I am using Backup 3 to back up the system. Then I am considering an A+I. I am worried that I will have to reinstall all my other apps... including MS 04. Does anyone have any suggestions?

After some more digging in console. I have determined that the failed backup have to do with the i Life 08 suite. There is a significant error that comes up when time machine tries to back up either i Web, i DVD, i Photo, i Work 08 etc... I think this is the major problem causing time machine to crash.

Sounds like I have the same or a similar problem. Western Digital 500Gb disks attached via USB (through a Belkin hub).

First time backup of 70Gb disk sometimes completes without an error message (although I only get 47 Gb on the backup volume ) and the second time it runs I get the same error “Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.” Tried everything - repartitioning the drive, renaming partitions, deleting the TM prefs file from the library, erasing the partition, changing the settings to prevent sleep mode/screensaver/putting the hard disk to sleep. Nothing. Disk just keeps spinning indefinitely. Have a support call into Apple but I think they are slammed with support call questions from Leopard - wait time is ugly. Any ideas?
