Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

HPIO Trap Monitor

I keep getting a popup message that says, "The application HPIO Trap Monitor quit unexpectedly. "Mac OS X and other applications are not affected." I can't close it out. Should I delete this dialog from Finder to get rid of it? I don't want to delete my printer software by accident.

The one to send to trash says "hpio trap monitor" under the little design with a pen, pencil and ruler, over a piece of paper, making the letter A presumably for application or maybe annoyance...

It has been 20 minutes now with no problems.

I already was looking at CNET for other brands of printers... unfortunately most of the highest rated printers are hp's.

I would reccomend searching and deleting all of HP's crapware and shelling out the $40 for VueScan.

VueScan works a heck of a lot better and doesn't deposit crap all over your system. It's a self-contained application.

More importantly, the HP crap is PowerPC only. If you hop into Activity Monitor, you'll see all of that HPIO crap (3 or 4 items in all) is all running under Rosetta. That'll slow things down significantly.

I've noticed a significant difference in speed on my MBP since eliminating HP's digital flotsum.

Peter,
hm... what version are you talking about?
The HP software, drivers and the StartUp Items ARE native intel (universal actually). At least the Photosmart 9.5 pack. And, scanning does work fine on Leopard, if you initiate on the system (you can't initiate on the printer, as the Trap monitor would have to be running).

Again, there are problems, and HP needs to fix them, but I can print and scan 'fine', and there are no errors or other crashes.....

Cheers,
dan

Come to think about it, it was about a year or so ago that I last looked. At the time, everything was PowerPC only, and trying to find any hint of a notion of an update on HP's website was an exercise in futility.

I guess I should've realized that they might've been updated since then. I stand corrected.

I still, however, prefer VueScan. VueScan manages to find a way to run everything perfectly from a self-contained app without having to resort to throwing constantly running processes in various places on my system. That, to me, still constitutes crapware on HP's part. It's just Intel native crapware now.

As soon as I find a highly recommended for Leopard all-in-one printer from another company I will be looking for friend with a PC and an broken or old printer who would appreciate a a gift of a nice HP Photosmart 3210. Hopefully this will happen before I spend too much more on ink.

This is after buying five HP printers over the past 10 years.

"...I am also having another problem as I can no longer get to an advanced menu in iPhoto 08 which enabled me to switch printing trays on the HP 3210 printer, so all I can to is print photos on letter size paper."

The interface is different but if you click on the arrow to the right of the printer selection it opens up an expanded menu. There you can choose paper type, boarderless 4x6 etc. Also you can get to any preset configurations you have.

I'm having the same problem with the "HPIO Trap Monitor quite unexpectedly" on my 7310xi All-In-One. The scan to iPhoto/Aperture feature seems to now be disabled. When I press the "Scan" button, I get "1. Select computer". When I chose this open, I then get the error message "No scan options. You need to install or run HP Software for this feature".

According to HP Technical support, they are aware of the problem and are working on an updated driver. They do not nave any workaround currently available. In order to get rid of the error message, they suggest going to /Library/Startupitems and trashing the HP Trap Monitor folder. This will mean that scanning from an All-In-One is disabled.

As there is to current ETA for the updated driver, they suggest checking

periodically. An updated driver, when available, will be available there.

Interestingly enough they have had one customer report that they were able to scan. They do not know how this would be possible.

Reposting the solution that worked for me:

FIXED THE PROBLEM by trial and some of the things everyone else tried and found didn't work. At least the pesky (to say the least) HPIO error screen hasn't popped up for ten minutes. Other readers with the same problem, please try this and report back if it works for you

Finder >
Macintosh HD >
Library >

drag hpio to trash

this required me to enter my admin. password

then

woosh! a happy sound I hope since this is the first time I actually wrote a message without the error box.

Also this just in from HP:

--------

hank you for contacting HP Total Care.

I understand you are looking for software for Leopard. At this time, HP only supports the preloaded driver install on Leopard.

The print only drivers (no scan features) are available (built-into OS 10.5). If you installed Leopard, you would need to go to Additional software and install the drivers for your HP printer. If your computer was purchased with OS 10.5 installed the drivers are already available. You should be able to plug the printer in and have basic functionality.

Refer to Apple document:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306684#hpdrivers

HP Engineers will be releasing an new version of the software for your printer, but it must be fully tested before we will release it for download. We have no ETA. You can sign up for updates on the hp.com web site and will be notified when the software is available. See link below.

HP's subscriber's choice is a free service where you can select to receive timely email notifications ranging from software and driver updates to creative ways to do more with your HP products.

http://h71036.www7.hp.com/hho/html/3618-0-0-225-121.html

NOTE: We have had a number of customer install the 9.5 drivers and have full functionality. HP does not guarantee this will work, but you are welcome to try it.

If the software above does not work, you will have to be patient and wait until the full feature software is available. You can use the print only drivers to access the print functions.

I hope this answers your question. If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.

Sincerely,

MYRNA
