Problems SCSI Scanner & Mac G5

I have an Imacon film scanner (type 1 SCSI) that I want to hook up to my G5 with PCI-X slots, running Mac OS X (10.3.9). Imacon recommends Adaptec, so I bought a 29160 which fits in the PCI-X slot. I installed the latest drivers from Adaptec. The G5 recognizes the card, but when I hook up the scanner to the card with a brand new 50-68 pin cable, the card disappears from the system profiler. I normally turn on the scanner first, then boot up the G5. I have also tried changing the SCSI ID on the scanner, but that does not help either.

I haven't been able to get any help from Imacon (now Hasselblad) and am hoping someone on this forum may be able to help.

My problem conversion is a new G5 dual core 2.3 with older scsi Epson Expression 1600 flatbed and Polaroid 4000 slide scanners. The ATTO express PCI card is ~$450 with new LaserSoft software D~$400 is too much. I tried a Ratoc firewire/ultra scsi converter (FR1SX). Connected the Ratoc to 400 firewire port on the G5, used internal termination on Epson, and Epson scan software that did not work previously with firewire on my old G4 dual 500. Turned on scanner, Ratoc light went on, turned on G5, started Epson scan and all looks go. I do not have to use Twain with Photoshop but can scan alone with Epson. I will also try Hamrick VueScan later for the Polaroid scanner. Also the speed of the Ratoc seemed like the old scsi --fast!!!!!!!

I too am having problems with SCSI and my new G5...I have a dual 2.5ghz Powermac with an installed Adaptec 39160 card that has worked perfectly with my two Fuji Pictrography printers. I had the opportunity to upgrade at a good price and got the latest 2.3ghz dual not knowing that Apple changed to the PCI-X slots. The only card that I've been able to find that I know works is the ATTO UL5D....$600.00. Does anyone know of any others that might be cheaper? Thanks!

My Scanner woes,

I bought the Nik. 5000 ED a bit ago to tack advantage of the bulf scannig capability. Quality is not the aboloute highest but good enough for most publishing and if a client needs higher res. we can get a drum or other scan.

Now I fdin out I can't scan my Xpan tranparencies with the Nikon so I am considering hooking my old Polaroid Sprints scan 35 plus up to the G5 as I already have the lasersoft software. But I have no idea what I'll need in the way of a card or otherwise.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I recently had this same problem with an Imacon Flextight precision II. Only I don't have a G5 I have an old 350Mhz G4, and I was able to get the Imacon working again with the RATOC adapter, but not without some help from their very good customer email support. The first thing I discovered was that getting it to work with 10.3.x was practically impossible, so Ratoc told me that it would work on 10.4, and it did. This is what I had to do. Upgrade the OS to 10.4, downgrade the Ratoc adapter's firmware to 1.23 (it comes with 1.33) and run an older version of the flexcolor software 4.0.1. This did the trick. Also note that I'm running an AC adapter on the SCSI to Firewire adapter, and the device needs a SCSI-1 to Ultra SCSI adapter on top of that, which makes it a really tight squeeze for your firewire cable, but it can be done! Good Luck.

this page will have everything you need to get going
