Leopard not burning CD/DVD media correctly?

After having upgraded to Leopard, it seems as if I am getting plenty of CD/DVD burn errors with practically every disc I try to burn, something that never happened before.

I have just broken 2 DVD+R DL media (Verbatim) that worked flawlessly on tiger but Leopard stops burning at around 70% with the following error:

Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed.
Error Code 0x80020022

I also tried burning CD+RW media that never ever created any problems on Tiger but Leopard could not so far verify any of the media I try - even though the burn itself works flawlessly and data is fine on the medium.

Has anyone using Leopard with rewritable media perceived more errors than before on Tiger?

I also had this Disc Burning problem for some time with no luck trying any of the suggestions in this thread. However I have been able to fix the issue and can now burn successfully.

Given it's wide spread affliction across a variety of machines, with differing Drive specifications I tend to agree that it is a software problem.

To resolve my issue I reverted to an Old copy of the DiscRecording.framework file.
Location: /System/Library/Frameworks/DiscRecording.framework

With 10.5.7 the DiskRecoding Framework is version 4.0.5

Using Time Machine I went back about a year and restored version 4.0.1, then restarted the machine.

Disc Burn works perfectly now.

I have my MBP for over two years now and was not able to burn DL media until today.

I have done many tests under Leopard as well as Snow Leopard – with a full restore of Leopard at one point and two new main boards, because my graphics processor failed twice. I used different applications and tried two different kinds of media: MediaRange DVD+R DL from 2007 and 2009. I had checked with MediaRange's support. They were really kind and helpful and told me that my drive must be supported and sent me new discs. I got the same errors, though.

So, today I tried lens cleaning and... now I am burning my third DL-Disk! It seems to work just fine. So, if you have the chance try a lens cleaning. I used this one, but it doesn't look like high-tech at all, so any similar product should do the same trick:

I have to add to those that posted that the CD/DVD laser cleaner worked. I figured I had nothing to lose, my drive wasn't working anyway. Yesterday I was looking for the price of a replacement because I really need this thing to work. After many months of torturing myself, trying to get it to work, I finally gave up, but searching for error codes and drive types I found that many people were having the same issues. I had an old laser cleaner (with the brushes on the underside) I bought from Radio Shack YEARS AGO, and popped it in. Immediately after I "cleaned" it I tried to burn a DVD and it worked. I am VERY HAPPY NOW!
My error code was This disc can't be burned because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0x8002006E) and in Toast it was (The drive reported an error: Sense Key= Medium Error Sense Code=0x73,0x02

Having a similar problem but ONLY with DVDstudio pro 4.2.2! All DVDs are trash but I was able to burn with iDVD!! reinstalled DVDSP with no luck, am trying the cleaner solution tomorrow but I feel its a software issue....Have spent the last 2 days trying to solve the problem with no avail.....will try to create a burnable image file from inside DVDSP and burn it with toast and report.

Nope, lens cleaning doesn't always work for me. After the lens cleaning, I still get the 'sense key medium errors'. It's probably not the media, since I've successfully burned about 300 of the same brand and model. It may be the DVD drive or the operating system. Strange that I was able to burn hundreds of DVDs on my 2004 1.5 GHz PowerBook G4 without a problem. I wonder what's different about these 2008 MacBook Pros.

After trying lots of different things including reinstalling DVD Studio pro, I unplugged all my usb devices which included an protools mbox and a rigged up internal (but outside my computer) SATA drive ->usb 2 which had my old installers and other info I needed when I upgraded to snow leopard. My burn worked fine this time around. Fingers crossed it was a usb power issue.

What media are you using, though, Kenneth? I note that lens cleaning has worked for you in the past according to some of your other posts.

The trouble with "media" is that even the same brand/specification doesn't necessarily come out of the same factory, or even from the same country. http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm provides a useful overview. For what it is worth the disks that Apple themselves sell under their own brand name as I understand it are made by Mitsubishi (who also make "Verbatim" discs) and Maxell (owned by Hitachi). I've never tried Maxell, but Verbatim have certainly been very reliable for me when used used in Apple drives.

I avoid Memorex like the plague after way too many bad experiences and observations of complaints by others and have found Sony to be very variable, depending on which particular factory they come out of. In Australia TDK are usually very good, too, but over here they all seem to come out of the same factory, with a "TTH02" code, while in other places this seems not to be so.

One of the differences between the drive in an MBP and the drive in your old PB is that the MBP drive is probably trying to do things faster, and with more difficult media, than the PB one was. Only the very last of the PB's optical drives (released in late 2005) could burn DL discs for example, and the MBP drives try to do it at significantly faster speeds, despite using much the same error/dust/ smoke/dirty disc/ bad media prone optical technology as their predescessors.

For what it is worth I've yet to burn a single coaster at all with the drive in my MBP 13 over the last three months (probably burning on average at least one DVD a day on Verbatim or TDK media) , so maybe they are actually getting better at it!

It is very unlikely that any of the things that you say you have done had the slightest effect on the burn, DiOnysus. What sort of drive were you actually burning to, what sort of computer were you using at the time, what media were you using, etc etc, etc. Information about such things can be useful, but your current, apparently first post, on these boards adds next to no information of use to anyone and no question capable of answering!

We can't even be sure about what sort of computer you are talking about? THis is the MacBook Pro forum, but the only computer you mention in your profile is a "Mac dual Quad core 2.8ghz, 8 gigs Ram". I'm sorry, but the relevance of your claimed experiences to problems mentioned by people in this thread completely escapes me, and sadly you don't try to point out the relevance yourself. Nor do you ask any relevant questions - unusual in a first post here - or provide any real answers for that matter either. Just what are your trying to say and how does it relate to burning discs under Leopard or Snow Leopard (or any other OS version for that matter) on an MBP????

Just thought I would chime in after the drive destroyed around 10 disks with sense error messages.

This is truly a problem. Was writing DVD+R DLs for backup of my Canon HF10 AVCHD movies. Using Ritek medium only. Using toast to implement menus and recompile and basic edit on the data. Gave up on toast, and used native burn mode on the disks with finder copies. No luck, one success in the last 10 disks. Purchased DVD-R DLs because my wife purchased a Canon DW-100 last year, which has been in the closet. Tried these on the Pro, no go! Plugged in the camera to the DW-100, used DVD-R DLs, voila it burned (but no menus this way).

So, probably back to the local Geniusbar (60 miles and aggravation away). Last time I went there, the genius' there said it would take two weeks to replace the motherboard since the graphic card region blew. After inhaling insults and finally getting to the manager, they replaced it 6 hours later.

But I think getting a new drive is in order. Thank God I purchased the 3 year service policy.

Feb 2010, I appear to have this same problem. All kind of weird error messages in my console:

+2/27/10 10:02:07 PM kernel SCSITaskUserClient - Invalid arguments: scatterGatherEntries = 1, requestedTransferCount = 0, transferDirection is 0+

+2/27/10 10:01:08 PM kernel SAM Multimedia: READ or WRITE failed, SENSE_KEY = 0x05, ASC = 0x21, ASCQ = 0x00+
+2/27/10 10:01:08 PM kernel disk5: I/O error.+

Disconnected all my external drives, both USB and Firewire 800 and I was able to burn a disc using BURN in the finder. I perviously tried in finder and in Toast but got errors. No idea what is up but hope this helps. I am using single layer 4 gig Tio Yuden DVDs

What brand of discs are you using Ti-maniac?

You mentioned Ritek in your earlier post. Memorex DL discs are Ritek discs by and large, and have a pretty awful reputation in Mac drives (and quite a few others too - see HERE for example) . The same Ritek DL discs are sold under a variety of names (see http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia?dvdmediadvdridsearch=RITEK...S04%20)

Try using some good quality Verbatim or Maxell DLs instead.

Keep the Ritek /Memorex for hanging in fruit trees or boat rigging to scare the birds away. 😉

Cheers
