Leopard not burning CD/DVD media correctly?

After having upgraded to Leopard, it seems as if I am getting plenty of CD/DVD burn errors with practically every disc I try to burn, something that never happened before.

I have just broken 2 DVD+R DL media (Verbatim) that worked flawlessly on tiger but Leopard stops burning at around 70% with the following error:

Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed.
Error Code 0x80020022

I also tried burning CD+RW media that never ever created any problems on Tiger but Leopard could not so far verify any of the media I try - even though the burn itself works flawlessly and data is fine on the medium.

Has anyone using Leopard with rewritable media perceived more errors than before on Tiger?

Is it leopard or is it my drive?

I recently had my optical drive replaced and I have a feeling that apple replaced it with a non-DL drive. I can not seem to burn a Dual Layer Disk. I purchased 3 types of DVD+R/DL Disc and none seem to be working via finder or disk utility.

Per my Apple System Profiler

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857:

Firmware Revision: HAEA
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

I am trying to create a backup of my Leopard DVD via these instructions:

http://blog.smalldog.com/article/450/use-disk-utility-to-copy-cds-dvds

Full text:
OS 10.4’s Disk Utility makes it easy to make an exact copy of a CD or DVD that can be stored on a hard drive as a disk image, or burned to a CD or DVD for future use. First, insert the CD or DVD you want to backup into your Mac. Next, drag the icon of the CD or DVD to the Disc Utility application (which is usually stored in the Applications Folder > Utilities Folder.) In other words, drag and drop the CD or DVD icon on top of the Disk Utility icon.

Disk Utility will launch, and then it will immediately open a window asking you to name the new disk image, and where to save it. Go ahead and save the image to your desktop.

In the Image Format drop-down menu, choose DVD/CD master. This is especially important if you want to burn a copy of the disk, and have it function as an exact clone of original CD or DVD you hope to backup.

Now click “Save.”
A new disk image will be created on your Desktop, with the extension ”.cdr,” It may take a few minutes to create this file.

If you click on the disk image, you’ll see it works just like a CD or DVD. You can store this new disk image on a hard drive. If you want to burn it to CD or DVD, you should again use Disk Utility. Otherwise, you’ll only be burning a copy of the disk image, and not an actual CD or DVD master.

To burn a CD or DVD master, open Disk Utility and look for the disk image of your CD or DVD, on the left side of the window. Usually it’s at the bottom of the list of drives. Now, simply select the image, and then click “Burn.” Follow the directions to burn the disk.

This is a great way to back up expensive software titles and game titles. Many games that require a disk to run will run off of the disk image – great for traveling.

I would also like to add to this....

I am having huge burn problems under leopard. Basically every 2nd disc I burn comes with the unreadable disc error - I am using high quality media that worked PERFECTLY under Tiger; not a single burn/read error the whole time having it. Yet I have a pile of unreadable discs on my floor which leopard spit out as bad.

I am thinking there are burn issues in Leopard with the Finder. This REALLY really *****. I have a whole slew of Automator actions for my photography workflow - and burning discs was part of this. Apple can you please figure a resolve to this issue.

I also seem to be having problems burning CD/DVDs in Leopard.

I'm using a MacBook Pro, which worked fine for burning discs in Tiger.

Now, with Leopard, when I insert a blank disc, nothing happens (in Tiger, a dialog popped asking what to do).

- Opening Disk Utility by hand doesn't show the disc and allow burning.
- In Finder, I created a "Burn Folder", and tried to burn it, but got a message telling me to insert the blank disc.

Basically, Leopard is not recognizing my blank discs. (I tried several discs to make sure it wasn't a media problem. I tried both CD-R and DVD-R media, both from 50 disc spindles which I had burned 20+ discs from before).

Please all read this topic: http://www.macfixitforums.com/showflat.php?Board=Forum32&Number=835555

I had the same burning errors and I really thought my disc drive was broken. (It even made weird sounds!)
Above topic on macfixitforums suggested to create a new account to test burning on a clean account. And believe it or not, this worked for me.

Now I know that this issue is caused by software, i only need to find the solution for my default account. Anyone?
