3rd gen nano shuts off automatically

When I dock my 3rd gen nano into my Bose portable it randomly shuts off and displays the battery charging screen on the nano.
When I press the start button the Bose remote the nano will play again for a few songs then shut off again. This doesn't happen with my ipod video.

Yes, I have the same problem of automatic shut-offs. They can happen as frequently as 30 seconds apart or 5 minutes apart. There does not seem to be a pattern to the timing. This problem only occurs while playing from a docked unit. It happens in my iHome as well as my DICE hard-wired car connection kit (which has a docking cable). When played through the headphone jack, everything is fine. This problem only surfaced with Firmware 1.0.2. However, the older firmware did not work well with iHome, as it would not respond to commands to turn on, wake up with alarm, etc. Also note that this problem occurs whether issuing play commands from the iHome remote control, the iHome unit itself, the iPod 3G Nano itself, or my car's radio commands (as passed through the dock with the DICE unit). Apple, when are you going to fix this problem? Hopefully before I return my iPod!

I need to modify my previous post. I have been testing the automatic shut-off after hitting play on the click-wheel instead of the host device (iHome or DICE car unit). So far, it seems as though the iPod will continue to play when started from the click wheel. I will continue testing. In the meantime, I am still waiting for Apple's next update to the firmware so that it will simply work as advertised!

Hi all - I just bought a new iPod Nano and Bose Soundock and I am experiencing the same "auto shut off" problem. It will play for a few songs and then just stop and go to the charging screen. Pressing play again will pick up right where it left off (as if you had pressed pause), but then it will stop again randomly.

This only seems to happen when docked, not when using the iPod with just the headphones. So far the trick of initiating play from the click-wheel instead of with the Bose remote seems to work, but that's not a real solution, and this is very annoying after spending $500+!

I called Apple too, they told me to contact Bose (which I thought was kind of lame). The Bose support rep seemed familiar with the problem, and said it is an Apple problem and only occurs when playing from a playlist (as opposed to playing all songs or all artists). I haven't verified this yet but I think she might be right. I'll post again if I find out anything new.

I called Apple last night and explained it happens not only to my Bose but my iLuv alarm clock. She stated she will forward the information to the engineers, I also stated that I am not the only one with the problem and she should read the discussion forum. We'll see what happens but hopefully there will be a new firmware update soon.

I have the same issue with my wife new ipod.

When installing the ipod on sunday, itunes update to 7.5 and i update ipod to 1.0.2.

I am using a Philips DM230 CD/Tuner/USB/ipod.

On their site they said the following :
"Your player supports normal playback of music on the latest iPod series, as followings

* iPod Classic 80G/160G
* iPod nano 3G
* iPod Touch

However as Apple changed the hardware and software platform in their new iPod series the "wake up to iPod" alarm option becomes inoperational so when you set the alarm wake up source to iPod, there is no sound output from the iPod when it is time for the alarm suppose to go off.

Apple has a target to release new software version before mid November 2007 for their new series of iPod to solve this problem. Once Apple releases their improved firmware for iPod, Philips will test it with all their docking players. Please check this FAQs regularly for the latest update with the result."

May be we can expect a new fw update in the next few days.

Yes, tell us.... how did you downgrade? I tried the reset and restore function but it still has 1.0.2 version, i already did this several times after a horizontal line appeared from my screen.

I used the iPod nano 3g for 3 days and after loosing battery, i re-charged it and after an hour a horizontal line appeared.

I went to the apple center in our country and informed them about the defect and also the firmware problem most of us have experienced.

Hope they release a new firmware and replace my iPod.

Hey guys, just chiming in that I'm having the same problem with my 3G Nano that it shuts off automatically when docked to either iHome radio of DICE car connector, but it's fine when just plugged into the headphones. My alarm function also doesnt work when it's docked.

I'm going to try downgrading the firmware and wait till Apple releases a new firmware.

That's exactly what i said 2 days ago and now with 2 days of tests i can confirm that is works well.

But be careful, itunes ask me today if i want to migrate to 1.0.2 for the Ipod.
My preference setting for automatically update is uncheck in itunes but it ask for the ipod. Just answer no by clicking on don't ask me again.

And we have to wait, as i mentionned in my previous email, i have a philips dock station and on their support web site they said Apple will deliver a ew version in the mid november to correct the issue regarding alarm.
