Windows Printing via Samba

In Mac OS 10.4 there was a feature in the Printer Setup Utility where the option key could be held down while "more printers" was being clicked and an advanced option would be added to the pull down menu for the printing method. This advanced tab allowed one to setup Windows Printing Via Samba. When one holds down the option key while clicking more printers in the printer setup system preference in OS 10.5, there is no longer an advanced option that appears in the pull down menu. Is there way to setup this same feature in OS 10.5?

When you're adding a new printer right-click on the top bar with all the buttons, then choose customize (or what ever it's called in english) and add the advanced button.

With that advanced button you kind of get a window like the old one, where you can choose the windows printer via samba.

But there's a problem: when you have to put in a "\" in the adress, it won't work, because when you're adding any letter after the backslash, the "add"-Button (and name gaps and so on) will get disabled.

I hope there's going to be a fix on that, soon. I tried to configure the printers manually with the CUPS webinterface, but still had no luck.

I also used samba printer sharing in OS X 10.4.10. I upgraded to OS X 10.5 Leopard yesterday and I can't get it to work. I did as suggested in an earlier post I added the advanced button to the toolbar of the add printer. When I click on it and choose type as windows and put in:
smb://my user name:password@workgroup/computer name/printer share name

In the device it shows another device. No other options there.

The name was set to workgroup. I changed that to hpdeskjet(my shared printer name).

Location I don't know what is supposed to go there so I left it blank.

Print Using: I choose the print driver for my HP Deskjet 940c

Shen I click Add I get the following error:

client-error-not-authorized

I had it working with no problems in Tiger, but Leopard just won't access it.

I can access the windows xp pro computer through the Finder and see my shared folders.

Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks,

Alan

Hi,
I cannot make it work either. I found the advanced settings, and could create a smb printer, but it does not connect to the server :

NT STATUS_BAD_NETWORKNAME

is the error message

I suppose there is something I dont do right in the format of the smb url, but I used the same with Tiger and it worked fine.
Help, please !!

I was having this issue too. This is a Windows/Apple compatibility thing I think, My company uses Active Directory but won't support my Mac Laptop On it. (They are living in the past).

Anyway, because Active Directory isn't set up you must enter your passwords while setting up the printer and check the box that says save to the Keychains.

SO, to add it on the NT network. Open Printer/Fax in System prefs. Then click the + Button. On top choose Windows Printer and you'll get the entire network. As you follow the network at each server you are going to if it requires a user name and password enter them and make sure you tell it to save in your key chains. When you finally reach your Network Printer it may or may not ask for a password there. My Company it only asks at the server levels.

Now for the unknown part. Depending on how your IT dept. has set things up you may have to enter your USER NAME in the Authorization Box as follows DOMAIN\USERNAME (NOTE the "\" backslash!). Also note that this format wasn't consistent across servers, again, at least at my Company. It all depends on how the servers are set up. To use the printer by my desk I have to go through 3 servers each two needed the domain\username and one did not. It's a guessing game unless you can use Active Directory.

At least in my company this worked and I'm able to print again. I did find if I entered my Authorization information wrong (type-os). I could NOT edit them in Keychain Access and have it work correctly I always has to go back to the whole add Windows and follow the correct path.

I'm sure someone more savvy than I might be able to chime in here and describe how to add a printer by just typing the URL and if you are that person please let us know it would be alot easier!

Hope this helps?!?

Hello,

I can locate my network share name via the adding a windows printer menus, but the problem i have is that i cannot locate the driver for my printer (Canon MP610). I installed the driver on my macbook (which I use wirelessly), but cannot find it through the "select a driver" or "other" options. The "select a driver" selection skips from MP150 to MP700. FYI, I have the printer connected to my Windows XP with a USB cable, the Windows computer is ethernet connected to a D-Link wireless router.

Any ideas?

Thanks...

Ok I don't know if this is helpful for some of you out there but I've had this problem with windows printing over samba as well, especially over wireless for some reason. Now with Leopard and the hitches it has thrown into the problem and from this thread I found it pretty hard to set up windows printing again. So anyway I set out to try and solve the problem and this is what I did:

1. I went to set up a printer and got the advanced option in the toolbar to show.
2. I selected smb from the list and typed in the url as follows:

smb://UserName:password@domain/ipaddress/PrinterShare

3. I found the printer driver and added the printer.
4. Printed a dummy page to the printer and it asked for authentication.
5. Typed in my User and Password and had it remember in the Keychain.
6. Checked printer and found it had printed the page.

This is done on a network that demands that the person printing has a user and password to print so that they can be charged for their print jobs.

So hope this works for more then just me. Check it out and let me know if it helps.

Seth – kudos! Your solution finally solved my longstanding problem.

For further clarity that might help others:

Domain name = network name. I my case = mshome.

Username is for the computer your shared printer is connected to. Type it with no spaces. I’m not sure it matters, but I typed it with caps in the appropriate places in my name.

You must use the IP Address, i.e. numbers and periods – the computer’s network name will not work. You can find that IP number at Control Panel, Network Connections, then right click on Local Area Connection, then Status, then Support tab.
