No sleep mode with G5 PowerMac

Thank you Richard for passing along your experiences with the Alchemy TV DVR tuner card. I too lost the ability to put my Dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 to sleep upon upgrading to Leopard. I had done an archive and install for upgrading to Leopard. If it weren't for all of the overtime that I am working at the moment I would have bit the bullet and done an erase and install to try to restore the sleep functionality. Your suggestion to reinstall the Alchemy TV DVR software (even though it is not Leopard compliant yet) solved the sleep issue on my G5! I can't thank you enough for saving me the time and work of an erase and install!

I'm delighted to have been able to help, but I feel the credit should go to John Conley, whose earlier advice on this thread I was following. But at least I was able to determine that it wasn't necessary to install ATI's older drivers for the X800 to cure the problem.

Incidentally, I too was considering doing either a 'clean install' or an 'erase and install' in order to cure this glitch... and the irony is that neither would have helped, so I'm glad I didn't waste time doing them! They'd obviously have wiped out the Miglia drivers for the Alchemy card just as the 'archive and install' did. The only 'safe' installation in this instance would have been the default 'upgrade' option, but of course that's by far the most dangerous type of upgrade overall.

Thanks, Richard. I came across the info on MacinTouch (posted by a "Scott R.) to give full credit where it is due. I first tried to "upgrade" my G5 and it was a disaster. I ended up with a partially complete installation --- just enough to let the G5 boot, but not much else. That's what led me to do a clean install (which finally worked, after several failed attempts and the infamous "source media is damaged" message that many have posted about. Since I did install the old ATI driver, I will wait until a future 10.5.x update includes a newer driver for the X800XT. Meanwhile, all seems well, except that I have an opaque menu bar rather than a transparent one; the menu drop-downs are transparent, so no complaints. One unanticipated positive result of the clean install is that I ended up only reinstalling the applications I really use, and left the ones that hadn't been opened in ages behind. More space on the Mac HD.

My wife's Intel IMac will not sleep either and it hasn't been touched with anything since I got it. Wish I had that problem. My G5 tower will not shut off using either Shut down or Restart. My desktop goes to a blank blue and I get the spinning gear for hours. I have to shut it off via the tower's button.

Sorry to hear of your problems. I can feel your pain, having experienced quite a bit of it myself in the past two weeks. Word is that the 10.5.1 update is in the works and has been seeded to developers. Let's hope it solves all (OK, at least most) of these problems.

2.3 DP G5 No peripherals. Erase and install. Apple only software. first attempt to sleep, aborts 2nd attempt crashes machine. have restarted from Tiger backup, no problems, have reset PRAM. Same problem seems I am not alone !

Just to be on record: My PowerMac Dual 1.8Ghz G5, running 10.5 with a GeForce FX 5200 also will occasionally (twice that I know of) sound like a jet taking off a few minutes after I put it to sleep. I just unplug it to get it to stop. And like a six-year-old, it also often doesn't want to go to sleep.

Of course, I didn't mind it not going to sleep when I had problems getting Time Machine to work (device not properly put away error message). I could swear the Time Machine problems occurred whenever the computer tried to go to sleep. I thought I solved my problems when I used a USB cable other than the one that came with the Iomega drive.

I also had a problem with the G5 earlier when it was running 10.3.9 (I skipped 10.4). It once had a problem rebooting after a network server was down and the computer whirred for several minutes, the fans blowing hot air until it finally decided to stop looking for the missing server. Shortly after, the drive died.

I too am having the sleep problems - however it is not intermittant -EVERY time I send my mac to sleep , the fans go wild and it won't wake up. I have a dual 2.7 G5 with the ATI X850 XT, I do not have an Alchemy DVR, but do have a SeriTek SATA card and a USB2/FW400 card. There are no drivers for those two last cards

Haven't yet tried any driver updates (was going to wait for 10.5.2), do you guys recommend anything?

WHen I put my G5 in sleep mode, it won't come back out. I have to unplug the computer and restart. But if I let computer go to sleep on its own, it comes back. However, very often the fans come on and go nuts. Anyone know what's going on here?

Leopard was an upgrade from 10.4.1

I have video card. Two screens for editing. Final CUt Pro. iLife, etc. Usual graphics apps: Illustrator and Art Directors Toolkit.

Sounds like a problem with Leopard upgrade.....

I had the same problems. You can see my thread on this forum only last week.

Eventually the only thing that fixed it was a totally clean install and then used Time Machine to Cherry Pick each App one by one Manually.

So that none of my old preferences were cpied over.

This fixed it.
Quite a bit of hassle but with Time Machine it wasn't to painful!! Better than re-installing all my apps by hand!

Exact same problem here and it is hugely annoying!
