Installed Leopard - now no sound from my PowerBook G4!

Hi - everything seems to work OK but ...

I get no sound. I can't alter the volume control (I get the 'stop' circle crossed out when I try). System preferences says the machine is set up to use internal speakers and I have no other Firewire or USB sound device attached.

Any ideas please? David.

Same problem here. System information:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: PowerBook G4 15"
Model Identifier: PowerBook5,6
Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Processor Speed: 1.5 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.1f3
<Edited out by Hosts for your privacy>
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
Version: 1.0

Completely stock apple system. Problem started after 10.5.2 update and is intermittent. No sound card detected and speaker disappears from menu bar. No ability to change anything in System Prefereneces as there is no sound output device detected.

Here's the info from my System.log. It's nearly identical to the other person's log in this forum. It seems a C++ module (extension .cpp) has failed. This is most definitely a software bug.

Apple, please fix! Here's my log:

P.S. I tried all suggestions here. And I have never seen that red light inside my headphone jack.

Confirm another case of this exact issue. Started occurring a short while after 10.5.2 and now I have no sound at all on any reboot. System log:

Why is this issue marked 'answered'? I sure haven't found a solution yet.

In the hopes this may help some of you with the same problem, I did as someone suggested on this thread and downloaded the combo installer for 10.5.2 and applied that over top of the current 10.5.2 which was done through software updates.

I have been running for a couple weeks now and have not seen this problem re-occur. I can't say for sure that it's been fixed, but it seems to be.

Hello,

This question is NOT answered NOR solved.

I recently upgraded from tiger to leopard, and installed all the software updates, including the combo 10.5.2 update.
All worked fine for 2-3 days until yesterday.

The day before, I had a problem when resuming from sleep mode:
I got a black screen with a message in white letters telling me to press the power button for 5 seconds.
I did this, rebooted and sent the bug report.

Since then, I have no sound.

I don't want to have to reboot or reset the PRAM or whatever to have sound working on my computer, when I know that my soundcard has no physical problems!
(Detected in leopard's sys info, works perfectly in ubuntu linux..)

From what I have read, this problem occurs since the first version of leopard in a wide range of apple notebooks that didn't have leopard factory-installed.

I know you want to sell macbook airs, but this really isn't a good selling technique!
I might in fact change my decision of buying one because of this...

Enough said, please solve this!

Here's what worked for me after frustrated attempts in trying everything in this thread:

Plug your headphones, test for sound and then unplug them and voilá the speakers should work now. It has worked for me every time.

PS. If you're getting the "No sound devices found", I suggest doing a clean install as leopard doesn't really work well when you install it over a previous system.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply and advices.

The lineout trick didn't work for me.

I do get the "No sound devices found" error.

I upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5 without formatting.
I currently can't afford the time loss of starting from scratch, reinstalling and reconfiguring all my apps, since this is my main production machine.

I might do a clean install when I have more time, but leopard is supposed to be installable on top of tiger on a wide range of machines, including mine. And I've read other posts where users claim that doing a clean install didn't solve the problem.
This is some kind of fake advertising...

In my case, it is not so terrible, I am a web programmer, but *imagine when this happens to a DJ* !
And I know many DJs and musicians in general that use macs...
Only because of them, Apple should already have solved this problem.
Or at least clearly state that leopard has sound-related problems on pre-leopard machines;
it is a question of respect to the existing userbase.

Don't forget that the existing userbase is the most powerful *free of charge* marketing tool when satisfied of the product!
Simply put, I will not recommend buying a mac anymore unless this is solved, and I think I am not alone with this kind of state of mind.

I am not here to make problems, I'm here to solve them, but I don't have enough technical knowledge in order to help in fixing this leopard's software bug.
And it is probably impossible for someone outside of Apple to help much, even with the technical knowledge, since large parts of OS X's source code are not public; nevertheless, if someone can give me information about a part of OS X's open source code that might be related to this issue, I am interested.

May 19, 2008 9:45 PM in response to hageir

I have exactly the same issue as hageir. Same messages in system.log but i have a faint sound coming from the speakers when booting (chime). i tried to play something in itunes and connect the external speakers and I am getting sound although very faint one (sound on my altec lansing is all way up). I've tried resetting all, all the tricks from the bag, nothing worked. Everything started when i got 10.5.2 but not right away, as far as i can remember there was one update after that and sound just got stuck to that minimum level.
After 10 days now i ran the diagnostic and i got error on sound test:
*Testing I2S failed*
*Init TAS chip*
*Initializing TAS3001C/TAS3004 Time out*
*Test Failed*
*Time out waiting for iaddr bit in ISR.5*

Looks like change volume test did not work, same as in GUI, the sound controls are stuck. At this point i am actively looking into getting sound board from ebay since it's a separate from the logic board.

If you have the same issue as hageir and other people, this is the explanation from the Apple Service Manual on Service CD:For G4 Computers

For failed test results, use this guide to help determine corrective action.

POST (Power On Self Test) Error or Memory Test Failure

a) Reseat installed DIMM(s) and retest.

b) If onboard DIMM failed replace logic board (PowerBook).

c) If installed DIMM failed replace DIMM.

d) If errors persists, replace the Processor Module.

CPU

Replace the Processor Module.

If Module isn't replaceable, replace the Logic Board.

I2C

Replace the Logic Board.

I2S

*Replace the Logic Board (PowerBook).*

Mass Storage-HD

a) Reseat drive cables and retest.

b) Replace the drive.

FireWire

Disconnect any FireWire cable connected to the unit under test and retest.

If error persists, replace the Logic Board.

USB

Replace the Logic Board.

ETC..

As you can see form bold text result is bad logic board, and since in my case it affects nothing but the sound, i'll still use it until it kicks the bucket. this may be solved by replacing sound board since it's separate form main logic board. Has anyone tried this?
