Installed Leopard - now no sound from my PowerBook G4!

Hi - everything seems to work OK but ...

I get no sound. I can't alter the volume control (I get the 'stop' circle crossed out when I try). System preferences says the machine is set up to use internal speakers and I have no other Firewire or USB sound device attached.

Any ideas please? David.

I have found what is the problem with mine:
I ordered and got a new sound board from the Ebay and was about to replace it when i found that the ribbon cable that goes over the top of the HDD in PB 17" was loose... needles to say it worked again after i reattached it. This was probably caused after I replaced the HDD and didn't firmly locked the connector on the sound board.
So all of you with the laggy sound controls (Volume up and down) and no sound with following message or similar in the system.log:
*Mar 8 23:27:38 localhost kernel[0]: ^PSound assertion "!mPlatformInterface->init ( provider, this, AppleDBDMAAudio::kDBDMADeviceIndex, mPlatformInterfaceSupport, irqEnableMask )" failed in "AppleOnboardAudio/AppleOnboardAudio.cpp" at line 3076 goto Exit*
*_Check your sound board cable!_*
Do not assume that board is toast as i did. Cost me $40 and i have a spare part now 🙂

i've recently run into this problem as well after installing 10.5 via DVD and then updating to 10.5.4 via software update. I'm a professional musician and a mute computer is a $2000 doorstop to me.

i recently installed skype v2.7, which seems to instantly change the sound preference pane to include Soundflower (2ch) and Soundflower (16ch) in the list of audio input and output devices. last week i tossed the com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist, com.apple.SystemSettings.plist, and com.skype.skype.plist files, restarted, and it seemed to solve the problem. today, same drill and nothing.
here's the latest quotable quote from my log:

i wonder if apple should maybe open a new 'computers' division in addition to being a cellphone manufacturer.

we put these people where they are today.

Just a suggestion:
Never use a computer that you use for business for other things.
If you need a computer for your music business, do not install other non-music functions, or at least keep a complete backup so you can easily recover. It's not Apple's fault when you install 3rd party software that causes issues.
At some point, we have to take personal responsibility for what we do.
You are also "hijacking" a thread instead of starting your own. Your issue is totally unrelated to that of the OP.

Your comments about Apple are out of place in a technical forum, especially one like this - a user-to-user forum where such comments can not help you.

I believe the fix is a mechanical one. The headphone jack on the side of your computer needs a gentle cleaning. This can be accomplished by simply inserting your headphones into the jack or putting a dab of WD40 on the plug before inserting it into your computer.

What I suspect is happening is the computer when dirty is incorrectly thinking it's connected to a digital device -thus the red light emitted from within the jack.

Hope this works for you too.

Hi,

I have iBook G4 (A1133) with dualboot Mac OS X 10.5.5 and Debian/GNU Linux (unstable/experimental) and I believe the problem is not mechanical. I sometimes experience this problem - no sound in Leopard (probably Leopard cannot initialize the soundcard), the volume icon is grey and I'm not able to change the volume level. On the other hand I never experience this under Debian - sound always work.

But after 10.5.4 Leopard update the problem occurs very rarely.

I know this is not much help, but wanted to share the experience.
