itunes won't play songs

Okay, this afternoon I bought some music on iTunes, listened to it, shut off iTunes, ate some dinner, came back and reopened iTunes and since then I haven't been able to listen to any of my music. iTunes is registering what I'm doing, the song title and little diamond figure appear at the top of the screen, the blue speaker on the side makes it's respected changes whenever I hit the spacebar but the music won't play, the diamond will just stay stuck at 0:00. If that's not weird enough, I can play movies and tv shows and the video is fine but there is still no audio. My computer has Windows XP and I've tried updating iTunes, repairing iTunes, updating Quicktime, and repairing Quicktime but nothing has worked. Help!

I've had very similar problems to all, been searching the forums for an answer, think I've got it via apple tech support:

see this link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313

to avoid the blah-blah-blah, search discussions for my name, if you're interested on the details of my specific problem.

now, the caveats post-process: virtually all music that was listed in the playlist sidebar folder "purchased" under "store" was deleted from the list. the songs are in the library, but it appears that the record of purchases is gone. also, the field "date added" was replaced with today's date (date of following the link procedure). so, no telling what's new or old...

at first, I was shocked (to say the least) to think that my purchased music was gone after following these steps; it's just the listing, however (I happened to have saved all the confirmation emails, and I've spot checked to verify that purchased music is still in the library).

hope this helps all who are dealing with this issue - I've been quite upset the past few days thinking that my 1200+ iTunes purchased songs were gone.

In case anyone thinks this problem is limited to running iTunes on Windows, it isn't. Everything apparently perfect in iTunes 7.6 except suddenly the "play" button and alternative keystrokes etc do nothing - for Library, CDs, iTunes Store - and nothing from iTunes radio either. The iMac's sound system seems fine - can listen to radio through a Real player. I've removed iTunes, Quicktime, every shred of preferences, plugins, etc, re-downloaded iTunes, same problem. Apple support willing to discuss but unable to help. Anyone got any further clues?

Ok here is the error that I HAD. It sounds very much like the same as many of the other posters here. I have over 2k of songs in my itunes library and no matter whch one I click on they wouldn't play. Ihad been using itunes without any trouble then I shut the machine down and restarted to find I couldn't play itunes after i restarted. I would double click the song or hit the play button and the diamond stayed stuck at 0.00. I tried the option of resetting of going into quicktime and doing the preferences change but unlike some posters i received no error. First off let me say I am using windows xp and logged in as Administrator so I am not sure how to fix it on a mac but vista should be the same.

Close itunes if you have it open
Click my computer----click c drive----click documents and settings----click the folder with the username you are having problems with such as (administrator)----click local settings----click application data----click apple computer---click quicktime----delete the file quicktime.qtp

go back to windows open itunes and voila your music will play again. The quicktime.qtp file will recreate itself when you start itunes.

Note...you may not see the local settings folder if you dont unhide the hidden folders. you can do this by once in the documents and settings folder click tools----click folder options-----select show hidden files and folders----I also remove the check from hide extensions for known file types

I realize this is an old post, but it seems like this issue is still coming up a lot, so it may be of use to someone out there and deserves to be bumped up 🙂

I just solved this problem by uninstalling 7.6, reinstalling 7.5 (downloaded from FileHippo) and then selecting iTunes.exe (in the programs folder) and choosing "run as administrator."

Apple Quicktime-preferences-audio-Select audio playback and recording devices. Under the playback tab make sure that the correct speaker outputs is chosen as default. in my case I had installed a program to create virtual drives which installed virtual speaker playback device and had made it the default instead of the actual installed speakers on my laptop. I changed the default to my internal speakers and then started itunes and to my delight it worked.

Same problems with itunes. Brand new Vista installation, new itunes installation, etc. Imported itunes music onto new computer, played fine a couple of times, then no song would play at all. Itunes indicated the song was playing, but counter stayed at zero, and the diamond never moved. Tried all of the previous solutions listed, but none worked. What finally worked for me was to got to the audio device properties, select the speakers, choose properties, and under the advanced tab uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device". The instant I unchecked this options, itunes started playing normally.

Hope this helps someone.
