Since Leopard, Mac keeps losing Airport connection
Since I installed Leopard, my PowerMacDualG5 keeps losing its connection to the Airport Extreme network. The signal-strength indicator in the top bar suddenly and unpredictably, but very frequently goes gray. I can reestablish the connection by going to that indicator, pulling down the menu, turning Airport OFF, and then immediately turning it back ON. As I type, here, it's gone gray again. I hope I can manage to post this message.
This never happened before Leopard. My MacBook Pro 17", also Leopard-equipped and operating off the same Airport Extreme in the same room, shows no sign of such a problem.
I still didn't download the Apple Software Updater's Keychain update for Leopard. Should I? People say it nixes the airport card completely, and/or network preferences.
Actually the posts I have seen indicate the contrary. This is often a fix for missing AirPort card after a Leopard install.
it worked for one entire day, the thing of erase all the passwords and stuff realated to the wifi connection, I'm not using any AEBS, it just a third party wireless router, but it has worked always on my tiger, I think is time to switch again until the issue can be solved by apple.
Same issue as all. I run Macbook Pro on a Belkin Pre-N router on comcast network. Tiger worked fine and fast. Did a Leopard install on my machine and DID NOT put one on my wife's macbook.
On the MacBpro, safari freezes, airport freezes, and connection is lost. Sometimes in the Network setting of the system preferences, the diagnostic indicator shows all services lit up green even though there is a freeze up.
If i use my ethernet connection, things run smooth and fast and don't freeze up.
To me this seems to be an issue with Airport software, browsers and how they are communicating to the router.
I notice how many of you are using the AirPort Extreme Base Station, and have problems with the connection loss. But I am using a Linksys router, and have the exact same problems. So this is obviously not a problem with the Airport Extreme Base station. Are there others like me that have problems with other types of routers?
yes, im having the exact problem with a linksys router too, I also have an encore router, same thing... I have recovered my system to tiger already....
add me to the list. i am running on a G5 (10.4.10) connected via ethernet to the Airport Extreme BS. i also have a few Macbooks on wireless that are also using Leopard. finally, i have an airport express extending the network. i have been running this setup for about 6 months flawlessly.
suddenly, the only computer that works is the G5 connected via ethernet. i managed to get one Macbook working wirelessly late one night by unplugging the AEBS for 5 minutes, but the problem was back the next day.
I am facing the same problem as well..
Been using Tiger since forever, nothing even similar happened, and from day one I started Leopard, and I am facing very fast connection drops every 1-2 mins.. And you can imagine what that does!
I first suspected it's the ISP, but after a long call, they've got nothing wrong.. So I got in here, and I found those loads of people on this discussion and other discussions facing the same problem, so it made me a bit relieved, but still, it's a big problem that needs to be solved. Specially, that my router lies in a place where I can't keep on plugging my computers to it, specially the iMac.. Not everytime I will have to move it to the living room so I could log online!
APPLE, Please help us before we get REAL disappointed!
Hi, i had the same problem, but i'm cured!
what i did was turn my Airport extreme to G only and put multicast to 22Mbps and the switched off the "rember network" in the control Panel.
Worked for me, since i did it i never saw the gray aiport sign again, it's been 27 hours since then.
Same issue here. I have a mac myself, and my boyfriend uses a PC. Firmware 6.2 on an airport express. I am consistently getting between 20% to 60% packet loss, his machine however, is running faster than ever after I reset the airport and recreated our network from scratch. I tried removing and reinstalling all network devices from the network control panel in system preferences, this worked ok, but I was still getting occasional 20% packet loss and now this morning the machine is back to barely usable on my network. I'm anxiously waiting for a fix, as otherwise Leopard seems to be noticeably faster than Tiger.
I too switched my aiport's settings to the following and have had perfect connections with my MBP and my wife's MacBook for over two days.
Change the radio mode to: 802.11g only (under 'wireless' in airport utility)
Change the multicast rate to: 24 Mbps (under 'wireless options in 'wireless)
We've been perfect from the second I made these changes. Thanks Portugal!
A couple more things I should mention, now that I am at work, I am getting no packet loss plugged in to an ethernet connection, and I did a clean install on this machine, not an upgrade. A tech at the genius bar suggested I safe boot (boot holding shift) and then reboot to clear the networking cache, this did not change anything.
Same thing here only different. I purchased the family pack OS and installed it on my iMac Intel, Macbook Pro Intel and 12" PowerBook G4. The only machine plagued with this problem is the G4.
But boy is it plagued. How do I uninstall Leopard and go back to Tiger? This is horrible.
I am on 10.4.11 with a MacBook Pro and have been having this same problem for several months and tried every advice I could find with no luck.
Last night I started troubleshooting again and decided to disable the JiWire Hotspot finding widget.
Bingo - problem gone, signal hasn't dropped in 24 hours. I turned the widget back on and my connection instantly started dropping again. Shut it back off - problem gone. If you have a wifi hotspot finding widget try disabling it to see if your problem goes away.
This has been aggravating me for a long time - I hope this works as a solution for some of you.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if the solution is to re-configure my $179 5GHz Wireless-n (draft 2.0) router to work just like a $20 generic Wireless-G router, I'm thinkin' I might'a wasted about $159.00….
