I wonder if Apple will issue firmware to fix this - or if it will be another scam like the Video out issues
I have an official BMW iPod adapter installed in my 2006 BMW 320d, which worked fine with my 5g iPod 60GB. However, my new 6g 160GB iPod Classic is not recognised by the interface at all, no matter what I try. Creating special BMW playlists does not help. Who knows a solution?

It appears that the classic does not work with a number of car interfaces - DICE, Dension, BMW - all of which I have tried in the last week - all the manufacturers claim it is down to the firmware on the new Classic - not their devices - this is substantiated by the fact that my previous generation Nano and an iPod Photo works in my Z4M with a DICE unit, my wife's Z3 with a Dension unit and my fathers 3 series with the BMW Interface - but the new Classic works with none of them ...

anyone notice how you cannot post more topics in the Classic main thread?

No, but are you trying to post from the TOP level where it shows the three catagories at the top of the list? If so, you can never post from that level. You have to pick one of the three catagories and then from within that level you can post a new topic.

A couple of weeks after the iPod classic was released, Apple put out a firmware update for it. Sorry I don't know the version numbers. Can you tell us whether you have applied the firmware update, and what version you are running?

I am on the latest firmware for the classic - which I believe is 1.0.2 PC
I believe the problem with this rests upon the car and radio manufacturers. They say their cars are iPod compatible. Of course the latest iPods won't work with the current year model cars, the iPods have new firmware than previous years. It probably won't be till next year when car manufacturers make their stereos compatible with the current iPods. Chances are, if I went out and bought an iPod capable car stereo and tried to use my Classic with it, it wouldn't work, not Apples fault at all.
I have a car stereo with a simple AUX plug on the front of it. This insures that anything I plug into it will play out of my stereo, my Classic and iPhone included.

Thanks for your insight. This information has been extremely helpful and neither patronizing nor useless!
Yeah I guess you are right - and you'd be correct about my Bose SoundDock that doesn't work properly - and a variety of other accessories - and also those idiots at Apple for their stupid Camera Connector which no longer works with the Classic - what a bunch of utter bozos - all in about £700 of various accessories, docks and car kits - but you are right - not Apples fault - apart from the camera connector
So you recommend an Aux kit - that must be safe to control - I prefer an integrated solution that used to allow me to use steering wheel controls to control the iPod

Well I have two cars. My dailey driver has the Sony CD player that I bought mainly because it has the AUX input on the face. I bought that so that I could use it with aby of my three Satelite radios that I have. It also works flawlessly with both of my iPods and my iPhone because it is an AUX jack. Anything I plug into it will work. I still have to control the iPod from the iPod itself but is that really a problem?
My other car has the stock stereo with no AUX input but I refuse to replace the stereo due to the steering wheel controls so I can't play my iPods in there. The FM modulators/transmitters that are available are garbage and there is too much interferance to make them even worth considering.
But again as far as the iPod working with the interface that you have, it is really not Apples fault. Apple does not claim the iPods will work with car stereos. It is the stereo/car manufacturers that claim they will work but they can't gurantee that either if a new unit comes out after the car was manufactured obviously which the Classic was.
Good luck with everything.

I suppose a better way to state it is that it IS Apple's fault since they changed the way the iPods work so they no longer work with those third party accessories. But it ISN'T their responsibility to ensure changes they make in their product line are backwards compatible with the thousands (neglecting passive ones like cases) of third party accessories available on the market.
But while they don't need to ensure backwards compatibility or even care if third party stuff works, it is in their best interested to try and do so simply from the marketing and public relations aspect. People who updated from, for example, a 4th generation iPod to a Classic only to find the Classic doesn't work with the several hundred dollars (or more) of accessories they already own, are more likely to return the new Classic and stick with what they had before or at best buy a discounted 5th generation model. But in either case, their attitude won't be to buy new Apple products or replace their accessories but instead to just use what they have until it dies and then see what the alternatives are what that time comes.
In other words, the slam dunk sale Apple had with an upgrade iPod for those users no longer is the slam dunk and in fact might prompt them to look at other brands or solutions (e.g. Car stereo replacement with a built in hard drive and MP3 player vs. an iPod dock for the car).

I own 3 i macs and 5 i-pods but i am seriously considering my buying of all things mac for doing this.
Sneaky as **** and no reason for it apple when you have nothing that works well to replace all these other dock accessories. The dock is average and the remote about as useful as a chocolate kettle.

Dear David,
Audi MMI also has problem. My Classic 160G playsback fine in A6 allroad,
but refuses to charge, whereas an old nano works perfectly on both counts.

I have the same issue with my 07 335i. I think that what's probably needed is an update to the bmw firmware for the Ipod 6FL option. I know there is a new one out there, but unlike with the Apple, I can't plug my BMW in and d/l the update. Cars are getting more complex.
I'll look into making an appointment to get the latest version of the software

Let me know if your update works.
In my dad's BMW we have the cd connected to a device that allows one to plug the ipod in and play it thru the cd player (don't know the name). Anyway, I had a 5th gen ipod and he has the older nano. I used to play my ipod thru it no problem, could operate the ipod as normal and the nano as well. Mine was recently broken and I just got the new 60gb classic. I tried connecting it today (it uses a usb connection) and all it said on the screen was connected to an attachment. It shuffled my songs and started playing but I can no longer operate my screen while connected to it which means I can't play individual songs, albums, playlists at all which is ridiculous. I don't like using his nano in the car because it doesn't have as many songs as mine and I have other stuff on mine that he doesn't.
