package installer crashes

Since Leopard I'm getting a lot of installers (the package,yellow and orange variety) crashing before installing anything;

Here's the crash log;

Process: Installer [381]

Parent Process: launchd [120]

OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5 (9A581)

Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP)
Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000001, 0x000000008fe0105c

Dyld Error Message:
Symbol not found: _GRAxesXAxisWindowSize
Referenced from: /System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Installer
Expected in: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphKit.framework/Versions/A/GraphKit

Any ideas why this is happening?

Thanks,

Simon.

I am having some issues with the installer as well. When I try to install a package file I get a window that tells me "Installer is damaged Installer is unable to open the package. This is likely due to the install framework's runner executable not having the proper ownership and/or permissions"

The error log shows a little more info: "12/4/07 10:17:57 PM Installer[790] Install's runner tool is not properly configured as a setuid tool. "

This is odd because a week or so ago, i was able to install things.

Try these two things:

1) Run "Disk Utility" in Applications/Utilities, click the "Macintosh HD" in the left hand side (or whatever it is named), click the "First Aid" tab, click "Repair Disk Permissions". Restart and test.

2) Test this in another user account on the computer. If you don't have one, create one in: Apple menu> System Preferences> Accounts. Click the lock in the lower left corner if it is locked and enter your password. Click the + just above the lock and type in "test" for all the fields it asks for. If you are on 10.4 or earlier, check off "Allow user to administer this computer". If you are on Leopard, make the account type an Administrator. Click "Create account". Click the Apple menu and select the last item ("Log Out" Account name). Log in as the test user and test. If it works here then let me know, should be an easy fix in that situation. If it doesn't work, then make sure you have tried step one above. If that doesn't work, then it may be an Archive and Install: Preserving User and Network Settings

Finally found a solution!
This same problem occured for me after using XTools - the GraphKit Folder listed in the crash log needed to be replaced. Using Pacifist, extract the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphKit.framework folder
replacing the existing one. Now all works fine. Apparently, this is caused by XTools installing Tiger version of GraphKit. See the following thread:
http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?p=464643
Hope this helps - was very frustrating.

Larry, THANKS! This does indeed seem to be the solution to the dreaded installer crash problem. I too had the Symbol not found: _GRAxesXAxisWindowSize error, on a new MBPro that I had transferred a PB to. I thought it might be helpful to describe HOW one uses Pacifist ( http://www.charlessoft.com/) to fix this, since it wasn't obvious to me:

1. get the CHUD package from the Apple Developers' site (registration required) and have the disk image mounted
2. run Pacifist
3. use Pacifist to open the CHUD package, navigate to the GraphKit.framework and select it
4. click on the install icon at the top left of the Pacifist window (a down-arrow icon)
5. if asked for admin password give it; if asked whether you want to overwrite the existing file at
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphKit.framework click on the 'Replace' button
6. Quit Pacifist and try to install a pkg (e.g, Xtools). If the installer comes up you are good!

This worked for me and took immediate effect -- I finally got Xcode Tools installed -- and of course you really need the package installer to work.
