Pointer jumpy on MPB (Leopard) after wake from sleep...

All,

My MacBook Pro's pointer is "jumpy" when the machine returns from sleep mode. Restarting the machine does clear out the issue. Has anyone else observed this behavior?

Thanks,

Josh

Once you reproduce the jumpy pointer can you open Terminal.app and run this command -

sudo dmesg <PRESS ENTER>
password: <ENTER YOUR PASSWORD>

and then copy the last 50 or so lines of output and paste it here?

Reason I ask is I had similar issue and I get a particular error when that happens - just want to verify if yours is the same case. If so we can open a problem report with Apple at http://bugreport.apple.com.

Same here...trouble with iStat Pro 4.5.

I was having issues with the menu bar not showing in 10.5.1 (after startup) until after I started running a program. Also, my MBP would often not shut down (the ball would spin but not actually shut off) and I'd have to hold down the power button. Also had several kernel panics in the past few weeks. System was sluggish overall at times.

Uninstalling iStat Pro 4.5 seems to have resolved all these issues this evening (thanks to everyone for a well-documented thread). Will post again if issues return without iStat Pro.

Also, was having issues with Airport dropping my connection a lot in recent weeks. Haven't had a chance to test this yet after the uninstall of iStat Pro.

Best,
Dave

i un-installed istat and everything seems good. i think it's weird that my powerbook and my sisters macbook have been running leopard very nicely (with istat too), while my mbp struggles with it. actually the only thing that bothers me now is the screen going black after a few mins, but i've remedied that by checking "automatically reduce blah blah"....

anyways, is there another widget or app that is like istat? thanks!

The reason is because this bug is hardware dependent. The latest hypothesis is that it is a bug in iStat and it appears intermittently only on Macs that use the Intel Santa Rosa chipset which Apple has been shipping starting around July 2007. For a similar app, I use http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/menumeters/. I'm still verifying to see if the hypothesis is correct.

I did see other earlier postings that have intermittent jumpy pointer problems without iStat which is why I did not remove it at first. Do you have the Intel Santa Rosa chipset? For example, an Intel MacBook Pro or iMac since June 2007? I'm not sure exactly which models have a Santa Rosa chipset in them. I just know that mine does from doing a google search.

Just adding an interesting discovery...I too have a Santa-rosa MBP that had the jumpy pointer problem, got rid of istat, problem went away. No big deal, that's been posted a lot, but I just got back from the Apple Store after playing with a new MacBook Air - HORRIBLE jumpy pointer after coming back from Sleep mode. Worse than my MBP ever was. Played with all three floor models, two out of three had problems. The first one I played with was REALLY bad though. The MBA's are not Santa-rosa, right?

Please see my earlier post. I think the jumpy mouse pad problem is related to the computer searching for an airport network. To try this out, just turn off your airport card, then turn it back on and try to make figure eights with your trackpad. Does the pointer jump all over the place??

This is my problem, at least. Santa Rosa MBP 2.4. GHz, Leopard. The problem did not exist on this machine with Tiger. I'm hoping a software update fixes it.

The question is Mace, do you have any third party software that is the real culprit. The airport problem is exacerbated by programs like iStat, which turn it into a problem. Without those offending software the airport issue, could best be described as a momentary lapse, not a jumpy pointer that goes nuts when you THEN turn airport off and on.

The ghost isn't in the machine, or the airport... it's in the software. If you have even one third party software installed on your MBP you need to see which one is really causing the problem. Start with any software that might have to do with your network. Just an instinct.

There is a test version of istat pro that attempts to address this specific issue. There is a post from the iSlayer devs about it on this forum post http://forums.mactalk.com.au/showthread.php?t=39612 (mentioned earlier in this thread).

I'm going to download it and give it a go, the more feedback the better for the iSlayer devs.

Here is the direct link to the test version of istat pro http://islayer.com/software/istatpro/iStat_pro_4.5SRMBP.zip

When my computer has airport on but not connected to a wireless network, e.g. searching for a wireless one (like at a coffee shop where there are no approved networks) then the pointer just goes nuts the whole time it is searching (no momentary lapse). I only get the jumpy pointer when my computer has airport on but is not connected to a network.

I'm 100% convinced it is software related. I uninstalled the iStat widget a long time ago but maybe there is some remnant of code somewhere? Could it be some other software? Yes. I don't have the motivation to do a fresh install of Leopard and test.

Has anyone bravely tried 10.5.2 to see if that helps?

Thanks,

Mace

Mace:

When you say you"uninstalled" iStat, did you also REMOVE the uninstalled widget? You need to completely get rid of the widget in order for the changes to take effect.

It would be great if this helped, otherwise I'm sure there's a software conflict that will eventually reveal itself when you have time to run through your 3rd party apps. I know it's a pain. I kept installing and uninstalling stuff until iStat turned out to be my culprit. I haven't had a problem since it's been gone, like months now.

Good luck.
