Pointer jumpy on MPB (Leopard) after wake from sleep...

All,

My MacBook Pro's pointer is "jumpy" when the machine returns from sleep mode. Restarting the machine does clear out the issue. Has anyone else observed this behavior?

Thanks,

Josh

Once you reproduce the jumpy pointer can you open Terminal.app and run this command -

sudo dmesg <PRESS ENTER>
password: <ENTER YOUR PASSWORD>

and then copy the last 50 or so lines of output and paste it here?

Reason I ask is I had similar issue and I get a particular error when that happens - just want to verify if yours is the same case. If so we can open a problem report with Apple at http://bugreport.apple.com.

This issue is irritating me, and I've had it since I first bought the machine. I recently performed a clean 10.5 install but tonight it started again with the jumpy pointer after waking from sleep.

My symptoms are:
+ jumpy pointer when using the trackpad
+ external mouse (MS Intellimouse Optical 1.1A with drivers installed) movement is almost normal, but exhibits some extra sensitivity
+ the Dock no longer slides smoothly open
+ folders expanded from the Dock (the 10.5 feature) don't expand smoothly
+ dragging windows causes slight 'jumping'

I don't have iStat installed (never heard of it!), don't use Bluetooth devices at all and turning Airport off didn't fix this. In fact the SystemUIServer process crashed when I turned Airport back on!

My system log does have the line-o-death:

*Mar 12 00:01:43 Garys-Laptop kernel[0]: AppleYukon2: 00000000,00000000 sk98osx_dnet - recovering from missed interrupt*

I only know one way to resolve this issue - reboot - but that's not a real solution. I add my voice to those calling for a real fix (and I've got fresh hope after that keyboard first-letter-issue fix).

EDIT: Oh - the MBP also takes a minute or two to wake from sleep but this is rare and I've not seen it since the clean 10.5 install.

Is there a thread for those who are having jumpy mouse issues but not using MBP and there is no sleep/wake involved? I just installed Leopard on a Mac Pro desktop, installed all the updates (10.5.2, graphics update) and instantly began having this problem. Weird key repeats and delays when typing, too.

Luckily, after about an hour of troubleshooting, I seem to have fixed the problem. Plugging the mouse directly into the Mac rather than the keyboard (I have one of those new flat ones), the problem has so far disappeared.

Add me to the list...

I'm having the exact same issues. The sleep/wake issue of the screen started happening before the mouse, but seems less frequent.

The issue with the pointer being jumpy and then seeming too sensitive and then not responding at all happens almost every time I wake from sleep and I've moved locations OR I had the battery drain all the way down.

I turned off my airport connection this past time after waking from sleep and having the jumping pointer issue. When I turned the airport off the problem got even worse, to the point where I could not control the pointer at all and had to shut down.

i too have a jumpy trackpad.. computer was fine for 6 months, then started this annoyance.. ive read many discussions on the issue, and found one that was talking about grounded outlets.. and i will say that my issue goes away when plugged into a particular outlet, that one must be grounded properly.. when plugged in to a surge suppressor, or even using on battery i have a problem.. this one outlet all works fine.. i just upgraded to leopard, and nothing changed, but i read somewhere that apple has a patch that only works on 10.5, but at that time did not have leopard installed.. now i cant find that link.. not know knowing if it would even work.. anybody know about this patch??

really annoying.. the pointer sticks, and then jumps a few inches, and then it goes where i want it too.

installed leopard to see if it would fix the issue? it did not. i have a jumpy curser. 2.2 duo macbook pro. was fine for 6 months, but since has been a problem, EXCEPT when plugged into a particular .. possibly well grounded outlet.. amazing how it works fine when plugged in here and the rest of the time i have a pointer that sticks and then jumps an inch or two.. and then comes back where i want it too. no matter battery or other outlet.

thought i saw a patch from aple for leopard to fix the problem, so i upgraded and now dont kow where that fix is.. but if it existed, why is it no tin an update?

im on 10.5

I believe this is the issue:

It seems to me like this jumpy trackpad issue is caused by a corruption in the sleepimage / memory cache.

_*And this is the solution:*_
Changing the hibernation mode, then removing the sleepimage and then resetting the hibernation mode to what it was previously has fixed the issue for me, hopefully it will work for you too.

_*This is how to do it:*_
In an ealier posting Mark Stull wrote:
" ... change the sleep state from 3 to 0. It writes the suspend to RAM instead of disk.

You lose the ability to change batteries while sleeping, but wake up is much faster and you get back like 2-4 GB of disk space.

open terminal and run this to tell what sleep mode you are in:

pmset -g | grep hibernatemode

This command will change you to mode 0:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

This command will reclaim your sleepimage and get back precious disk space:

sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage

re-boot
"

So I did that and it fixed the problem for me, but it left me without the ability to change batteries without plugging the power cord in and this could also lead to loss of data when the battery runs out completely.
So to overcome this, just change the hibernate mode back to 3 after you have followed the above steps and you will get a new sleepimage which will not be corrupted and should make everything work normally again, including of course a properly functioning trackpad & mouse.

_*So here is the next step:*_
+Make sure you only do this after the last step in the set of instructions above, ie: after rebooting your system.+

open terminal again and run this to reset the hibernate mode back to 3:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3

Now reboot one more time and everything should be back to normal.

Hopefully the problem won't ever re-occur now, but if it does just go through these steps again. Like I said to me it seems like a corruption in the sleepimage. Whatever caused it in the first place may cause it again, but I have now not had the problem again since I performed these instructions on my system about 3 months ago.

Note also I have never installed the iStat or iSlayer apps that some people in this thread here talk about, but hopefully this will be the fix for all.

Cheers!
