Leopard - Keyboard Freeze?

I installed Leopard last night (Erased and Installed) and thought that everything went fine until I started noticing that my keyboard freezes up every now and then. Keystrokes don't register for about a minute and then everything works fine again. Keystrokes that I enter when the freeze happen do not 'buffer' and are completely lost.

Does anyone know why this may be happening?

Thanks!

Maybe. I never had any problems with keyboard freezes before -- but I've installed this update and now caps lock and num lock are off when the green light in the buttons is on!?

I had that problem before the keyboard/mouse/trackpad thing locked entirely and would not unlock. Today I took the machine to Apple store. The genuis suspected hardware failure. They are going to be shipping the machine for replacement of the keyboard/trackpad/etc.

I get the idea that there are two distincs problems with non-working keyboards and trackpads:

1. Intermittend keyboard failures while working on a MB/MPB. This only affects the (internal) keyboard, not the trackpad.

2. Both (internal) keyboard and trackpad not responding when resuming a MB/MPB from sleep. External keyboards and mice (both USB and Bluetooth) do work in this particular situation.

Now yesterday's patch may have fixed the first issue, it certainly has not fixed the second one, since I'm still suffering.

Can anyone acknowledge these findings?

cheers,

Frank

I was having the same problem of my keyboard and trackpad locking up, although even though I have it installed, I don't think it's related to Excel as some people have noticed but tends to happen when my MBP's been sleeping with the lid closed and fails when it wakes, forcing a hard shut down to get them working again.

I applied the patch yesterday, which seems to have done exactly squat to fix either the keyboard or the mouse. This is exactly why I waited a good month before upgrading. Obviously it wasn't long enough!

I'm having these issues on my 1.67 PowerBook. 10.5.1. 1GB RAM, no MS software installed, no Firefox, no Quicksilver, got an Apple Wireless keyboard, Apple Wireless mouse, ext HD for Time Machine. Log out and close lid every night, open lid every morning to wake up.

Usually, the wireless mouse and keyboard will not work, but the built in will work. If I use trackpad to turn off bluetooth from the menu (very slow response by the way in that bluetooth menu) and back on, the wireless keyboard and mouse will come back. If this happens, it happens once a day that I can see. Perhaps it happens more and I just don't catch it because it fixes itself in a certain amount of time.

Today, they all froze up - wireless and built in. Clock was still working in the menu, feedback from other programs were still being displayed. i.e. pulled out ext HD usb plug and the finder warned me about that. Email was still being checked and updated the amount of new email in the dock. I just couldn't do anything.

Closed lid, wouldn't go to sleep but the display darkened. Opened lid and display never came back on, but was not sleeping. Held down power button until it restarted.

Located this discussion group and reported my experiences.

I know that this thread is mostly if not entirely about notebooks but here is my solution for a desktop. I just installed Leopard onto my Power Mac G5 Quad and had a terrible problem typing text in any Office application so tried Mail. Ditto. Another problem mentioned here was that while locked up it would not buffer the keystrokes. Same here. Also, I would type a single letter and it would start repeating that letter for the entire row; ditto for a delete or backspace. I was also annoyed by how slow things seemed to load, e.g. System Preferences, compared with 10.4. I shut down Time Machine, and turned off the external HD. Still the problem exists.

I noticed that my Logitech Bluetooth mouse worked without problems so I thought maybe using my Bluetooth Mac keyboard would solve the problem. I switched out my standard wired keyboard with a Mac wireless keyboard. So far so good, I would NOT have been able to type this message without lockups, haven't had one. Some things load faster, and my fans, which before would periodically crank up to take off levels, have been totally silent.

Hope this helps someone.

Sorry but the wireless keyboard didn't fix the problem completely although it did help a lot but every now and then I'd get a hang up that only lasted a second or two but it would buffer my keystrokes. I just completed an erase and install. During the install and set up of MS Office name and address entries, I started having the keyboard and mouse get VERY intermittent. So I pulled all the USB devices out of the monitor, this included an iSight camera, printer, FireWire scanner and the problem stopped immediately; everything has worked very smoothly. I really suspect the problem is with the USB and the polling by the computer is what hangs the wired keyboard up. Furthermore, opening System Preferences and selecting the Keyboard/Mouse is now really fast!!! Ok, I'll let you know if this isn't the fix.

Dear Sirs,

Seems like there has been more enough complaints about this subject but still there is no solution available. I've tried all the hints available in this discussion including the PRAM reset and of course the special update available from apple itself (Download ID: sd16618). The update gave me bit of a grace period when I almost could feel the freedom but now it has started all over again. There has been several occurrences within the past hour and really I've had quite enough. Please Apple, work something out.

So far I have been closing the computer's lid to regain access to the keyboard's functionality. Sometimes I have been restarting her.

I also tried to find some clues from the system console. That's how it looks like:

The log shows each time I've closed the lid. Before the Sleep entry there is another one: AppleUSBHub::setPowerState(0x6a8be00, 4 -> 2). It feels like one to be held as a suspect.

I will try to file it also as a support request as probably many of you have already done.

Another thing. I have 7 Macbooks in my office. I now changed mine for the latest - the 3,1 version. 4 of these Macs have Leopard installed as the OS X version shows to be 10.5.1, but I with the latest hardware am the only one who has the problems with the keyboard.

Sincerely.
