My kid dropped my new phone in the toliet, NO help from the Apple store.

Yea so a long story short, My kid threw my iphone in the toilet. and after trying everything that anyone suggested, I realize this thing is not coming back to life.

So today I took it to the apple store to have them fix it. I never had the chance to activate it because I am waiting for my current contract to expire. They soon told me without activation with AT&T they could not help me.

So i guess my question is, can they refuse to fix my phone, even tho I am willing to pay for the repair???

No drenching it in a toilet voids everything... Even if it were active, the phone is most likely dead, I see to think you may have misunderstood them... Once wet there is no warranty and they wont fix it, it would be cheaper to buy a new one

The reason why is due to all the hackers out there that got their iPhones bricked. Many were putting thier phones in water, waiting for them to dry, then taking them back to the store saying it didn't work (but never telling them they hacked it). Apple on many new ones added a water damage sticker (changes colors when gets wet and stays the new color when dried) so if it shows it was wet, they don't fix it. For you, you say you had it, did nothing with it, and it got wet and now won't work. To them, it just sounds like a hacked phone trying to get a new one by doing what many hackers posted as a way to get a new one but no longer is a valid way.

Now I am in no way saying you hacked it and are making this up, but rather pointing out, the fact you did not activate it and had it so long and now come in with water damage, to them, it is the classic, bought the phone, hacked it, messed up, now trying to get a new one.

I actually think that this complaint is somewhat vailid. The inconsistency in which Apple replaces/repairs phones is what bothers me. You can read on forums all day long how those who have "bricked" their phones by modding/unlocking are getting their units replaced NO QUESTIONS ASKED and this poor guy is willing to PAY for his mistake and is turned away.

It just seems to me that Apple, in their attempt to provide excellent customer service, ends up encouraging the "bad behavior" because people know that no matter what they do to their phone, Apple is likely to replace it. Except when they don't, like the OP.

Well this is considered water damage which is no different than if you dropped you iPhone in a pool or in an ocean and ran into an Apple store and asked for a replacement, the best thing this person can do is call the Apple customer service line if they didnt get help in the Apple store and explain their situation most likely the person will have to purchase a new iPhone because the cost would be expensive i'm sure to have it fixed.

Does make me glad I have one of the first batches of iPhones (release date) that doesn't have the water damage indicator in it 😉 Not that I would ever damage it on purpose, but I would hate to have a little water spill on it and turn the indicator (without damaging phone) then later have a problem and find they won't cover me because it says it got wet (who knows when). And where they put it, I can easily see it getting wet from rain or other common moisture.

Humm went to read Warranty to see if it is from time of purchase or time of activation. Well technical support is from time of signing up (activating). Hardware does say from time of purchase, but also said from *original purchaser*. So that does mean all iPhones as gifts can only be taken back in by the person who bought it? I know they won't know if I gave one to a friend and he/she activated it, the only record they really have is them owning it so they would never know...but does make me wonder if they happen to mention it was a gift does that void the warranty?

But anyhow, it does say it doesn't cover damage from accidents.

Once again, unless I've misunderstood the posting, the OP was NOT trying to get a warranty repair. He asked for and was denied repair service which he would have paid for.

My point is, Apple will GIVE AWAY new phones to people who will go in and LIE about what happened and this poor guy can't even PAY to have his repaired.

Of course, he may have just run into one ********* employee. If the OP gets denied by a second guy, then I think we have an issue.

My iPhone was dropped in a pool, and of course didn't work any longer. When I asked about having it repaired at the Genius Bar in the Apple store, I was told that although the warranty doesn't cover this kind of damage, their policy for this was to provide me with another phone for $250. My friend who caused the pool incident had already bought me a new phone, so I haven't take advantage of this yet.

I was willing to pay for the repair. But i was declined by the employee because he said the phone must be activated before they can do any repairs. And being I had the phone for more then 2 weeks, they couldn't accept it.

I live in NYC so im gonna try the other Apple store, but it still bugs me as to why they wouldnt repair it if im willing to pay for it. I rather spend the 200 dollars to fix it then to buy a brand new one for 400

It will be $250 plus tax.

I'd try the other store. Just because one guy told you that doesn't mean that thats the policy. Could just be a bad employee.

If you get that answer again, talk to the manager. They have a lot more power to bend the rules.
