Permissions Repair Error: ARDAgent.app

I get this warning when I try to repair permissions.

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Any ideas as to why?

Everything else in leopard seems to working okay.

I didn't have trouble with permissions either until I installed the ARD update.
The problem might actually be in the update.

Either way, the immediate fix for me is to disable it.

The version of remote management that came with Leopard might work okay. It could be reinstalled from the leopard CD with pacifist.

I suggest that anyone presently installing Leopard, skip the remote management 3.2 update.

But I don't believe it's wise to use an app that is broken either.

When Apple gets the app fixed in the near future, simply reinstall the new update. 🙂

another option might be to use an earlier version like 2.x, but whether or not the earlier version will run properly on leopard is anyone's guess.

And what application do you think is broken? On what evidence do you base this claim?

Better yet, can you even tell me what the warning message in Disk Utility means? If you can't, then please don't go telling other people to trash a file in their OS X installation.

This is AWFUL advice. Why delete the ARD Agent and disable the functionality?

Look, NOTHING IS BROKEN here. It is JUST a reporting issue with repairing permissions... the fact that a warning (a warning, not an error) shows up in repairing permissions really means nothing.

ARGH. Seriously, this is like sawing off your leg because you see a piece of lint under your toenail and you don't know it's not gangrene 😟

If thine Leopard's tail offends thee - whack it off!!!

{No wild life was harmed in the making of this joke}

After 3 leopard reinstalls (upgrade), numerous permission and acl permission troubles, programs behaving badly (failure to start, jerky video, crashes, etc.) I came to the conclusion that the Apple's Remote management 3.2.1 upgrade was the culprit. Every time after I applied the upgrade, the aforementioned problem cycle would begin all over again.

So I dug around at Apple Support and found instructions on how to delete the ARDAgent App.
After deleting the app, everything stabilized and began running correctly.

If you are one of the lucky ones who upgraded the RM Client and are having trouble, then I suggest you remove the ARDAgent.app and reinstall the original one that came with Leopard.

To re-install: Delete the /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app
Download and install Pacifist 2.5.1 http://www.charlessoft.com/
Using Pacifist: search and locate ARDAgent.app on the leopard DVD.
Re-install the ARDAgentapp in the default location - reboot - Enjoy!

This is interesting. I installed Leopard the day it was released. Very happy with it except startup (either from a cold start or a restart) took about 2-3 minutes at best with a black screen for most of that time.

Deleted the ARDAgent.app yesterday and startup is back to it's normal 30-45 seconds with a black screen for only about 5-8 seconds. I don't and probably never will use Remote Desktop, so no love lost there. But if you were looking for a system improvement related to this file, here's one!

So apparently, it isn't just a matter of the permissions not being recognized. It seems it cannot repair permissions because there is something wrong with the file itself!

My thoughts exactly. I am convinced that something terrible is wrong with that update.

I ran leopard for 3 days with the RM Client removed and seen a drastic reduction in the problems I was having.

Yesterday I reinstalled the original RM Client from the Leopard install disk with the help of Pacifist and received a further boost of performance. As of this writing I have experienced faster boot times, better application performance and stability and still (knock on wood) no more file or permission troubles.

Now that I have her "hitting on all eight cylinders" she is blowing away Tiger. Leopard is now noticeably faster booting and running apps than my Tiger installation.

Running Leopard right after running Tiger feels kinda like driving my GTO right after driving my Taurus 🙂

From what you said, it would seem that there problem might be the way the installed installs Remote Access as opposed to a clean install via Pacifist. I have the paid version of Pacifist as well and will try it. Can you tell me if you simply installed Remote Desktop of, if not, what you installed from the Tiger disk?

TIA.

ps- Does Repair Permissions show the same error?

Surely, be glad to share.

Be sure you are using the latest version of Pacifist (2.5.1), (an earlier version probably won't work).

Insert leopard dvd.

Click the "Open Apple Install Discs" button

A window will pop up that says: Please choose the Apple install package to open
Select: OS Install - Mac OS X and standard applications (Mac OS X Install DVD)
Click "Choose" to continue.

A small progress window will pop up. It will take a minute or two to load
An install window will open after loading listing the packages available for install.
On the menu in the "find" box type "ARDAgent.app"

It will find and highlight the ARDAgent.app for you
right click (or control-click) the highlighted app.
a small menu will open
select "Install to Default Location"

After it finishes installing, close everything and reboot!
Enjoy!
