Sent mail goes into outbox, server says offline, how do I fix it?

Hi, It sounds like there is a problem w/sent mail and leopard. AOL is one of my accounts and the outgoing mail gets put into the outbox and is not sent. THe server attached to the email says "offline" and I could not figure out how to change the server. I thought it had something to do with the problem. Anybody have any suggestions?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5)

Are these the settings you use?

-Account Type: IMAP
-Incoming Mail Server: imap.aol.com
-Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.aol.com:Your AOL Screenname Here
-Server Port: 587

This issue has been giving me a real headache so I had to take a break on it, I checked the settings and made sure the port was 587. Interestingly, the connection doctor said the send servers were connecting to the internetthere were green lights but I still got the message" Cannot send message using the server smtp.aol.com.....ANd when I used the connection doctor today the AOL incoming server was spinning and I got a greenlight for the outgoing server. However, I did receive email in my AOL inbox. I have beeb using Mail Preferences and then going to the advanced screen and edit servers. I am not sure what else to try.

Got the exact same problem. Having been spending the last 3 days on phone support from Apple trying to sort this out but no luck on any settings. I use my.mac account for mail so there are no issues with other servers etc such as AOL to blame. Also had a wretched install with the whole system locking up and demanding an unknown password. Couldn't even start from CD and had to break in from my laptop using the iMac as a firewire drive and trash the systme folder beofre doing a clean install. Add to that the fact that the backup files will not return to the iMac, even after getting 3.1.2 and I am not happy.....

Hi..I am lucky, the Apple Store is right near me so I went to Genius Bar for help, we completey cleared out and reset my email accounts, AOL and .mac...basically started from scratch and let leopard set it up and then mail worked....However, then synching with my IPhone, I could not delete mail from my mail account...somehow some of the old server names were still there..so went in and deleted those.... and changed the setting save deleted mail on server to "no" and that solved it......

So my AOL in the Mail application is now working but I cannot attach in AOL..Called AOL and that seems to be a problem they are working on....
