I just installed Leopard, but now every now and then the CPU use goes up to 190% with a process called DirectoryServices. Forgive my ignorance but what's going on? Applications don't work after a few seconds and all I am left to do is force shut down the computer and re-start. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Definitely also seeing this issue; For me, it seems directly related to changes in airport connectivity. 1st time it happened, my connection got dropped, second was changing networks. Seems now to happen changing networks about 1/10th of the time.
This IS a huge problem and should be fixed ASAP. I was on an international flight here the other day, and I was looking forward to using my macbook to make the time fly. I didn't notice that "directoryservice" had started eating up my resources, and a few minutes later the battery was empty... Not good. I have the directoryservice running at 190% at this very moment... 😟
icebourg: How did it go? Did this help or do you still suffer from the consequences of the bug?
I've just changed the setting but wont be able to test for some time (as my hd sounds weird after the "many" unclean shutdowns).
I, as other, think this has something to do with the network being going down. Since this only happens at my home (not in school) were my new wifi router/adsl-modem seems to be somewhat unstable.
Apple, you must fix this issue else all Windows fans will tell us/you that OS X is no better than Windows since OS X also crashes as much as a regular Windows infected PC.
So far, two major bugs (this and TM freezing) for me and 10.5.1.
Edit: Oh yea, this began happening after I upgraded to 10.5.1 from 10.5.0 (which was a clean install).
I have Geektool installed with top displayed on my desktop so every time I logged in from sleep I could see what processes were going crazy. After making the change, the DirectoryService process still went crazy, but it didn't seem to cause any ill effects. Before, I could not do anything online until I manually killed the process. After I made the change, though the process went insane, it died (or reigned itself in) automatically very rapidly. So it fixed all my symptoms without curing the disease.
Since then, I've done an archive and install of Leopard and I have had none of my previous issues. I also just did an upgrade to 10.5.1 which has not reintroduced this issue for me.
like hnyungi, i also had done an early upgrade to the next-to-last build of 10.5.1 before installing the official release, so i wonder if that's part of the problem. i didn't repair permissions before upgrading the 2nd time, but have multiple times since.
for me though, none of the solutions people have posted have worked. i've tried setting both Authentication and Contacts under Search Policy (in Directory Utility) to Local.
sometimes i kill it and it chills for 10 minutes or longer, other times i kill it 2 or 3 times in succession because the cpu spikes immediately after it's relaunched. i've been keeping my airport on because i need it to work, but i'm never switching networks and the signal is strong enough, and i'm on a fixed ip. but it's getting to the point where i'm going to make some quicksilver action to invoke this action regularly, because on a laptop, i can't otherwise use leopard if this chronic problem persists.
there's no way i'm going to do an archive and install to fix the problem, because i don't even have enough disk space. is there some way to go deeper into the system to prevent the service from running? like being able to configure launchd and disabling this service? i don't use any network collaboration/communication features of the OS, though i do regularly mount remote shares over afp and ssh, and use remote desktop.
This is a problem that has occurred several times on my white Macbook - most recently about an hour ago. I had Pages open, no other applications, no peripherals attached, no Internet connection. Let's hope the people at Apple actually read these posts, because it seems to be a widespread problem and it NEEDS to be fixed.
This annoying issue could be related someway to the upgrade procedure from Tiger to Leopard. Yesterday I backed up the home folder and fresh installed Leopard. So far, so good, so fast!
Update 10.5.1 installed.
I'll keep you updated.

Unfortunately it most definitely has nothing to do with upgrading from tiger to leopard as I and many others have experienced the problem after clean installs.
I suspect the issue lies in the update 10.5.1 instead as it seems nobody experienced any issues before the update.
I am on an SR MB, running 10.5.1.
I bought the macbook with 10.5 installed, upgraded to 10.5.1.
I am also having this problem. The only time it happens to me is when I'm at school - when I'm not connected to the internet. I use my computer at home on and off the battery and I never have any problems because I'm always connected to the internet.
When I'm in class - every time, without fail, my computer heats up, fans go nuts, DirectoryService runs like crazy and my battery life goes right down.
I'm not running any crazy things on the computer - especially when this happens. So, I definitely believe that it's related to the internet connection, and only related to the internet connection.
