Question

Folder Information: Calculating Size slow

I'm trying to clean up my HD. When I select a folder and use Apple-I to find out the size I get the display "Calculating Size" but it takes a very long time to actually calculate the size, even for small folders.

Any ideas why? or a workaround.?

G5 dual1.8, Mac OS X (10.5), mac mini 1.66 Ghz/Powerbook Tit 400 Mhz/iMac 20" intel

I'm getting the same problem. I can only assume this is connected with the cover flow option, but if it is kind of renders the cover flow option (on my machine at least) useless.

I'm not sure why it needs to calculate this every time the applications folder is opened.

I don't know why the size calculation is taking so long, but to turn it off go to View / Show View Options and uncheck the box at the bottom regarding calculating sizes.

This check box will only be offered if you are currently in list view or cover flow view in the Finder window.

I've got 10.5.2 and the issue is not resolved. Calculating the size of a folder in Get Info is pretty much unusable. One would think that something this simple would have been fixed long ago. Frustrating. Anyone have a workaround so I can find out the size of a folder before copying it to size-challenged Mini hard drive?

i think everyone here on this thread is using 10.5.
i'm 10.4.11, did a google search for this topic and came here.
anyway. i'm having the same problem. and have been since i got this computer.
so what does that tell you?

I'm using 10.5.2 and I don't have this issue. +Get Info+ calculates the size immediately!
It just calculated my entire audio folder's size in no more than a second, which is over 40gb...
Cover Flow is enabled, by the way

But I have Spotlight disabled! Which was killing my performance. I think Spotlight is causing lot's of headaches with Mac users, which might be the case here as well..........

I have the same issue. It recalcs the Application size every time I open a window. Is there a way to turn this off? It is causing my machine to be very slow. TM is not turned on.

Im' seeing the same issue here. In fact, it takes so long that I've all but given up using Get Info for folder size calculations now.

Since all of these posts came after Leopard's release, I would say it is a Leopard bug affecting PowerPC and Intel Macs. Hopefully the 10.5.2 Update will fix it.
