LG Viewty

Not going for the iPhone because I want a better camera and LG have brought out the fab (if weirdly named) Viewty.
Of course it's not mac compatible with iSync so I may be posting in the wrong place.

LG's support people were quite rude when I tried to find out if it would show up as an external flash disc or if there was any other way of porting photos taken on it to a Mac or even if it had Pictbridge. The answer (at premium phone rates) was a very curt "No!" to everything, no attempt to even pretend to be helpful. I later found out from a review site (there is currently nothing useful on LG's site) that actually it does have Pictbridge so at least I can connect to a printer but LG's "support" staff don't seem to know this.

If anyone gets one of these and has any success getting the photos onto a Mac can they post about it?

I wouldn't bother normally, particularly with LG's bad attitude to people trying to actually BUY their goods, but I really want a camera that's also a phone rather than a phone with a bad camera and this seems the best around at the moment. I looked at the new Sony-ericcson K850i but it was rather disappointing and didn't take anything like such good photos in the shop.

Hi

I will be interested to see what the outcome of this is. I'm also interested in this phone mainly due to the camera. I do however have concerns about the ability to sync this phone with OSX.

I'm probably going to make my mind of this week so I hope to drop some feedback here. So far all I have seen is the fact that LG dont support OSX and like yourself I found the LG website utterly useless.

On the 3rd party front these sites make mention to LG (but I dont have the phone so I cant test them) -

Hope this helps

I have purchased the LG Viewty (KU990) and it is a really, really great phone. Only two bad points:

1. IMAP4 support does not IMAP through SSL (So gmail won't work via IMAP)
2. Lack of iSync support (and PC sync software doesn't work with Win2k3)

I would be really interested if someone created an iSync plugin for the Viewty. I will try the TP software mentioned above tonight.. if I get any success I'll let you know!

I noticed Leopard ships with an iSync plugin maker.. I have tried to create something myself, but to no avail.

Hi Tom

Good to hear your enjoying the LG phone ^_^

I had another play with the Viewty today and I'm really impressed with the features. The camera alone is worth choosing this over the iPhone.

You mentioned that the IMAP doesnt support gmail - any luck with .Mac?
Any issues connecting the LG to the Mac with Bluetooth (photo/video transfer)?

Unfortunately I'm still hitting a brick wall on the mobile phone forums regarding integration with OSX.

Cheers

I am just about to buy this phone. I tried it in the shop for bluetooth conectivity and was very disappointed. Sending an individual file from the phone to my MacBook Pro was fine - as expected. The problem arose when I tried to connect to the LG phone via Bluetooth File Exchange. It connects but there is no visible files or the folders on the phone - however when you drag any file to the Bluetooth File Exchange window it goes to the phone OK.

I can't see the way to take multiple photos from the phone via bluetooth in one go.

Spotlight > Search for: "iSync Plugin Maker"

..Spotlight rules in Leopard!! If you can't find it this way, it may be a part of the Developer Tools and you'll have to install those from the Leopard DVD.

Shame `Three` ran out of KU990s.. O2 sent mine via Home Delivery (part of DHL) and they couldn't find our road and left it in the warehouse for 4 days and didn't bother to contact me/O2.. it wasn't until I called Home Delivery did I realise they had forgottern about me!!

It seems the forces are against us getting our mits on these Phones?!! 😝

Took the plunge - should have the LG in my mittens within the next 2 days ^_^

Why do O2 show new customers so much love and screw over their loyal long term contract paying users? I had to go through the usual assault course with the O2 upgrade team to get a decent deal. Initially they wanted me to pay more a month than a new customer and wouldnt give me a free handset. I dont think so.

Good to hear the bluetooth connection works well. Looking forward to getting my hands on the phone properly. Proper support for LG from Apple would be cool but I've resigned myself to accept that I may have to forfeit sync-ability (if thats a word) for better phone functions.

I've been with O2 for 5 years now.. and they are by far the best when it comes to looking after their old customers! If you think they are bad.. seriously, don't try any one else.. or you'll be in for a real shock! 😝

When I ordered my Phone I was reading off the tariff and contract details off of their web-site, which says the phone was free.. the chap on the end of the phone didn't even try to explain to me that O2 wanted money from their existing customers... and gave it to me for free too!

The phone is awesome, I think you'll be chuffed with it!!
Loud-Speaker isn't great quality, but can be really really really loud (tip: don't wack the ringer up full blast or you'll have an office full of people jump out of their seats when it rings.. trust me!?! :p)

The icons are very OSX-like when in the silver theme, the black themes icons suck.. but setting the desktop to the OSX Fish desktop resized/cropped to 320x240 and leaving the theme on black.. it looks just like an iPhone?!! He he!

You have the choice of Handwriting recognition via the supplied stylus (which looks just like a lipstick!), the standard T9 predicted txt (and you CAN add words into the dictionary.. phew!) or 'snail' typing when writing txts etc.. from the phone - the handwriting recognition is fantastic and great for jotting things down quickly.. better than any PDA recognition I've ever used.

I can confirm there is definitely an issue browsing the phone via 'Bluetooth File Exchange' it DOES indeed appear blank.. which is strange to say the least! But sending files from the phone is easy via Bluetooth and USB is always an option.

Only real missing feature is iSync Plugin SOMEBODY!?!!! 😝
