LG Viewty

Not going for the iPhone because I want a better camera and LG have brought out the fab (if weirdly named) Viewty.
Of course it's not mac compatible with iSync so I may be posting in the wrong place.

LG's support people were quite rude when I tried to find out if it would show up as an external flash disc or if there was any other way of porting photos taken on it to a Mac or even if it had Pictbridge. The answer (at premium phone rates) was a very curt "No!" to everything, no attempt to even pretend to be helpful. I later found out from a review site (there is currently nothing useful on LG's site) that actually it does have Pictbridge so at least I can connect to a printer but LG's "support" staff don't seem to know this.

If anyone gets one of these and has any success getting the photos onto a Mac can they post about it?

I wouldn't bother normally, particularly with LG's bad attitude to people trying to actually BUY their goods, but I really want a camera that's also a phone rather than a phone with a bad camera and this seems the best around at the moment. I looked at the new Sony-ericcson K850i but it was rather disappointing and didn't take anything like such good photos in the shop.

Correct - this is not a sync - just a copy, sorry, it is all I need (I aways make new appointments on the computer, I just like having a copy on my phone.) Not tested on anything other than my 10.4.11 and with only my calenders.

The phone, as I found out, cannot read an exported version of the iCal because the phone uses an older format called vCalender V1.0 and not the iCalenderV2.0 used in iCal. so I was going to need a number of steps to copy over to the phone. my script just does the following (and is very crude):
1) find iCal files,
2) export each event into an array,
3) write each event into a new file if the event is not to old (older than 1 month) or to far into the future (3 months), writes as in vCalender format -some translations take place, some not.
4) sent this file (stored in /tmp/) to the "Bluetooth File Exchange"

As I say not very pretty, but does what I need, and I don't have a very complex calender 🙂. The .app and code and some basic instructions can be found: http://ical2viewty.blogspot.com/

Have a good weekend,

Pat

I have been using my LG Viewty for nearly a month now. I guess I got used to doing things the other way round when it comes to bluetooth communication with my MacBook Pro.

I am looking forward to any new solutions for OS X from LG. I think they really could hit the spot in a war with iPhone by doing it.

This is such much better phone and camera when compared side to side with iPhone. OK we all know that UI isn't as slick but it has so many more usable functions built into it. I love it.

please 2 important details before i buy:

• does it support more than 2GB microcards? (4GB or 6GB)
if yes, which brand works for sure?

• is it possible to transfer ringtones from mac to viewty by USB 2.0 cable?
(maybe ringtones made with GB 4 or other audio apps)

• can i send and get my .mac mail with viewty?

• if not .mac mail, is it possible to use my googlemail account with viewty?

thanks

I love Mac people!

So the upshot of everybody here's "Never say die" approach to the Viewty is that in spite of what LG's "customer services" say, you CAN move picture and video files across to a Mac and you CAN move phone numbers and contacts back and forth by Vcards.

AND, LG are now working on full iSync.

Well LG owe all of you because I might just buy one now.

I've read users in other forums report that the 4gb sandisk cards work no problem. I found this out after buying a 2gb sandisk so I cant confirm 1st hand.

Ringtones, MP3, mid, video, images etc etc all transfer no problem on bluetooth and USB. I direct right click on file and select - more - send to - pick your phone - done.

I'm reading my .Mac mail no problem via the built in email application but I do get errors sending mail. Still looking at this - may just be the setting I'm putting in, esp since I can receive mail no problem (if anyone can jump in here I would be happy to hear your advice). You can also set the phone to check for mail every 15ins, 30mins, 1, 2, 4 or 8 hours. So you can get an almost push email result.

You can of course log into .Mac through the web browser.

Google mail do a stand alone application you can download to run your google mail on the phone.

i ordered the viewty yesterday @ amazon.de for 425,- EUR-

could i go more into details, if possible:

is there a step-by-step introduction for dummies, how to set up
mail (maybe 2 things, .mac mail and gmail) in the viewty, i ve never dunn that, not even with my T610 or older phones.
do i need an online account, or how is email receiving and sending billed @ vodafone please?

i ordered a "2GB Sandisk ultra II micro SD Card". it writes/reads at 10MB/sec.
is that an advantage in the viewty or isnt the phone capable of reading/writing at this speed?

may i presume that the "4GB or 6GB Sandisk micro SDHC" works, too - if not
being formatted in the viewty? someone said, you dont have to format the micro cards
if bigger than 2GB. but i never read from someone special, that he uses a bigger card than 2GB, so nobody can confirm this for 100%, yes?

the size of the card is important for me, as i want to copy some audiobooks and albums, alltogether 2-3GB and the rest is for selfcreated movies and many pictures.....

which format do the ringtones have to be recognized by the viewty? can i create
ringtones with GB4 and copy these to viewty?

thanks!

OK, not wanting to be disappointed. Which bit of LG said this?

LG UK folk claimed to know nothing and that even Vista support was not guaranteed!!

It would be so helpful if some clever bloke just did that iSync plug in. I pay $10 for it and based on what everyone else on this post is saying, so would a lot of other people.

Have had a viewty for about two weeks now and delighted with it. Shame about the lack of isync but who knows maybe we will get recognized?!
Should I have bought an iphone? I don't think so, especially since the viewty was a free upgrade!
Have been trying to get music on to it from either itunes or straight from a CD (via the mac) it says it is in an unrecognised format when it arrives at the viewty (thanks for the tips about making the card a mass storage device!). Can anyone help with how to transfer music to it in a format it likes?m I tried via bluetooth, but it said it would take 40 min to transfer one track at about 2 mb per sec?!!

1) If you don't want IPhoto to Open every time you connect your Viewty by USB (since it is normally recognized as a Camera), you should first of all change the Preferences of the Application "Image Capture" under "General" and set "When a camera is connected open NO APPLICATION".

2) Then connect the phone to the mac using the USB cable included with the Viewty. What I do is to directly drag and drop the album folders from the "Itunes Music" folder into the "Sound" folder of the LG. This is way faster than Bluetooth, and the Itunes' "m4a" format is supported by Viewty.

3) Disconnect your Viewty and on it, go to Music, the library will have to update automatically and you'll find your songs in their albums.

If you first want to give it a try, just drag and drop a single song out of any album and look how it works.

Good luck!
