HP Devices & Leopard (my FAQ)

Since a lot of the postings regarding HP printers & all-in-ones are around the same few topics, I've created this posting to put what I know in one place. I know this thread won't stay at the top, but hopefully people will be able to find it searching. So with that being said here goes:

1) The print drivers included with Leopard ARE the latest drivers. If you are downloading drivers from the HP site, they are probably older then what is on the Leopard DVD. this will change over time, but today the Leopard DVD is the closest thing to being current that you can use.

2) There is no software update available from Apple for HP print drivers. The reason some of you have seen updates is that if you do not install HP drivers, but have an HP printer connected via USB, you will see a software update for the printer drivers available. These are the exact same drivers as on the DVD.

3) Lots of you have said that downloading the older drivers have solved issues. Well the installer isn't actually installing a new driver (since we don't overwrite newer drivers with older ones). I have done a little bit of digging, and the one thing that seems to happening is that a command line utility is being run. My suggestion is that if you did an Upgrade Install, your device is connected via USB, and you are having problems, open your terminal and try the following command:

/System/Library/SystemConfiguration/PrinterNotifications.bundle/Contents/MacOS/m akequeues -u

The -u option updates the cache of installed drivers and this seems to be what is fixing the problem.

4) If you're having problems with HP Trap Monitor crashing on Leopard (you get the dialog "The application HPIO Trap Monitor quit unexpectedly."), you can remove it with the following command from your terminal:

mv /Library/Printers/hp/hpio/HPIO\ Trap\ Monitor.app ~/.Trash/

You can also simply copy the app from the above path to the Trash, but for some of you I know that is too much clicking. 😉

Note the implications of trashing this application is that front panel buttons will no longer work on your machine. But given this application is crashing anyway, the buttons are already not working. When updated installers for your device are available, they will include a Leopard compatible version of this application.

5) For some devices Duplex printing for side binding prints the last page upside down. This is a known issue and we are working on a fix. I don't have an ETA for when this fix will be available.

6) For some devices, the installer on the CD/downloaded from the HP.com Web site crashes/doesn't work. This is a known issue, and we will be releasing Leopard compatible updates as soon as possible. In these cases for the time being you'll be limited to print only functionality from the installed drivers, or if you installed the software before you upgraded to Leopard you may have some additional functionality present.

7) Scanning Issues - lots of the devices require an update to the software in ordered to support scanning. Updates are being worked on and will be released as soon as possible.

8) Faxing Issues - lots of the devices require an update to the software in ordered to support faxing. Updates are being worked on and will be released as soon as possible.

9) Presets Issue - Presets are not being saved/honored. This is a known issue and we are working with Apple on a fix. I don't have an ETA for when this fix will be available.

10) Printing from tray 2 issues - these are still being investigated. These are not as widespread and are still being investigated. Any information you can provide with the trouble you are having is greatly appreciated.

11) Airport Base Station attached printer not showing up after upgrading to Leopard - we haven't seen any widespread reports of this. Most threads I have read seem to indicate that making sure your Airport Base Station is running the latest software, and if so possibly restarting the base station, seem to clear the problem. If you're still having a problem, please let me know.

12) Some newer printers (released in the last few months), the installers show an error on install, but dismissing the error will lead to the solution being installed successfully. Certain pieces may have problems (as described above), but more functionality then print only should be there.

Note that I will continue to answer questions in this forum, and update this list as best I can. However please bear with me if I don't get back to you right away, I am monitoring this forum on my own time, and sometimes need to talk to other people before I have a clue as to an answer for the problem.

Just trying to help.

I have a question regarding a HP Officejet 7310. I have posting with this quesiton but so fr no replies. The question is regarding setting up my printer for network printing. I just purchased a iMac 20" and my printer is connected via USB. I am trying to setup a PC to print through the iMac. I downloaded Bonjour and my PC sees the printer no problem and seems to set it up fine. But when I try to print nothing happens. If I change the print driver to an Apple Color Laserwriter driver then it will print but very slow and with very limited print options. Will I ever be able to print with the HP driver installed on my PC? I apologize if this seems more like a PC question.

I have 2 HP printers. A PSC1100 and a Photosmart 325 photo printer.
Having the PSC1100 connected by USB actually stops my mac mini starting up, even when the printer isn't actually on. Which is the wierdest error I've ever seen.

Tried to install the standard drivers which crash and don't install.

Anyone else had the error? Where it says you must power off and start again?

I have a Photosmart C4180 All-In One printer. Fortunately I can print and scan except from one program, Photoshop Elements 4. Every time I try, PE quits on me and HP ProScan sofwtare freezes. Ever since I did the upgrade to Leopard I have not been able to get the same features shown on my computer when I want to scan as they used to show on the little screen on my printer. I used to be able to push the Scan Menu and then scroll through until I saw what I wanted to use, i.e., scan OCR to Word. I get nothing like that now. I only have three options - Scan and Reprint, Scan to Memory Card, and Reprint Photo Originals. Will this be taken care of by a scan driver update? Also, when I try and scan a document it says it cannot find the OCR software. Will the Check For Latest Software feature work again?

Andrew, thanks for the post. I have a problem Not necessarily a Leopard specific. I have a Photosmart 7350 and a Macbook Pro and macbook. I've been unable to print to the printer when connected to either. I'm currently using the gutenprint 5.1.3 drivers. If I print from Pages (1 page of text) i get all the text on 2 or 3 lines on the page. The text overwrites itself. Making the document unusable. I've submitted a support ticket (???) via email and got a response. I followed the instructions on the response and that is how I got to the point where I could print as described above. (this happened under tiger.) I followed the instructions again under Leopard and no improvement. I event deleted the entire HP printer driver folder and had the SU download the drivers. Nothing. I'm sure what else to do. Thank you again for taking your own time to help.

Thank you for monitoring the forum/thread, Andrew. It is greatly appreciated.

I have an HP 5940 printer (not a common model if the hits in a Google search are any indication). Prior to installing Leopard, I was able to successfully print over the network to the printer connected to my Windows PC. After installing Leopard, the driver I previously used is seemingly missing.

What is the correct approach for making this work again? Do I need to install hpijs ( http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs) or is there a better solution?

On the whole I am quite disappointed in the hoops required to make this work. Printing is far easier on Windows...

I have a question regarding my HP 1320 LaserJet. After upgrading to Leopard, it just gave me fits trying to print. It is hooked to a Windows 2003 Server machine and is shared to the rest of my machines. I had attempted to hook it up to a DLINK Print Server, but it never worked correctly. Anyhow, it always asked for a login and password to print (I figured that out and have fixed that part), but when it sends a print job over, the ready light blinks a few times (normal) then the attention light starts blinking and the job is out of the print queue. If I press the Go button, it feeds a sheet of paper and prints.

Is this the tray issue that you have discussed in other threads or is this something else?

Thanks for any advice you can throw my way.

Scott

Andrew,

Thanks for all your clear info. But, alas, I am a little slow, so let me ask you this if I may:

I have an HP LaserJet 4--an oldie, but a goodie--that was working fine with the appropriate driver on my imac G5, using OS X panther. Now, no such luck. I've tried everything I know (which isn't much) and I can't find the appropriate driver for Leopard anywhere. This can't possibly mean that I'm going to have to get a new printer as long as I continue with the new mac OS, right?

Any thoughts or advice would be MUCH appreciated,

Howard

andrew,

thanks again for the contribution here. since upgrading i have been unable to either install a driver from the leopard dvd, install my original cd-rom from HP that came with the printer (it pauses after clicking install and hangs - system activity shows heavy cpu but no discernible progress) or download a driver from hp. in the list of supported printers it doesn't seem to be listed.

thoughts? 🙂 is this in hp's hands?

on a brighter note, i do have an epson photo stylus r320 and that worked without issues once i plugged it in.

thanks,

wayne

OK, so one update here. Call it 4B.

4B) One other option for dealing with printing issues (especially after an Upgrade install) is to Reset the printing system. This is really the only way to fix the problem above for Networked devices since the makequeues command won't fix that. One warning though, following the procedure here will remove all print queue's you have, which while it may be a short list and easy for you to deal with, for some it may be a pane in the neck. With that being said, here goes:

From the "Print & Fax" System Preference, old down the Control key as you click in the Printer list (or right click in the Printer list if you have a multi-button mouse), and choose “Reset printing system” from the pop-up menu that appears.

This will clear out multiple different issues, but should be used only as a last resort. Note you can also find out about this by looking for "Resetting the printing system" in the help menu while in System Preferences.

OK, let me get a couple of different questions in this thread answered.

dooqui - This is a PC question, but I am working on an answer for you, hopefully I'll have one before the day is out.

Sean - we are working on rolls for our scanners now as well. I don't have an ETA for you, but I can tell you your scanner is on the list.

Ukriccouk - I've heard of this issue once, but after getting the customer to actually send in their unit to us it turned out to be a bad USB port on the computer. Just a question, have you tried all of the ports on you mini and tried a different cable?

Stamper - see my post in your other thread. I should have some good news for you hopefully later today.

Paul - I'm looking into it and will get back to you.

EmmEff - You're is also a Windows printing question. The answer will be the same as dooqui. I'm working on an answer and will post it here as soon as I have it.

CodeRaven - You've got the inverse problem. I'm also working on an answer for you.

wildermensch - I'll check. Its possible you'll have to use the Gutenprint drivers.

Wayne - what kind of printer do you have. The installers on the CD that came with your printer or you can download are broken, but the Leopard ones should have installed with the Leopard unless you deslected them. Try my updated post with 4B and see if that works for you.

Nice post. I have a HP6100 all-in-one. I used the HP uninstall however I think it left a few items in place. I was getting some kind of error with /Library/Printers/hp/Utilities/hpSuppliesTool.app/Contents/MacOS/hpSuppliesTool
I sent the crash report to Apple then tracked that down and removed it. I still have a few bits of HP stuff floating around..like:
/Library/Printers/hp/hp designjet system maintenance/HPDesignjetSysMaint.app
That I am not sure if I can trash it or not.
Anyone have a list of the HP installed software that can be trashed? Or any experience removing the HP software?

Thanks,
Mike

Thank you for posting here in this forum. I have an HP Photosmart 7550 printer. I have 2 computers, one where the drivers were installed and one where they were never installed or used (iMac G5 vs Macbook). I've tried the HP drivers on both computers. Both appear to install the correct drivers. I print a document. The printer starts. Garbage comes out.

This happens with both computers. Both produce identical output for the same page printed.

Since its an older printer, is the PPD incorrect? I have connectivity (USB cable) but it just prints a garbled version of the document.

Any help would be appreciated.

Andrew,

Thanks for the help. On the HP 2200 dt we know the presets are not saved, but you can use the printer configuration utility under windows and change the printer defaults so that it prints by default from OS X Leotard from tray 2 instead of tray 3. So the only time you need to mess with the settings is if you want to print from tray 1 or 3.

Duplex printing is ok with the 2200

Hope the presets problem is solved before I get outa school.

Rachael
