CD doesn't import when I click "import"

When I stick a blank CD in that I do not have in my library, SOMETIMES, after it asks me if I want to import and I agree, the CD disappears from under "Devices" and does not import. Only when I eject and reinsert does it import (after asking me if i want to import it). This happens intermittently.

Me also....
I have only had my imac about 5 weeks, theres hardly a thing on it... so have been filling my itunes library.
I put a CD in and it appears for a second or two on the desktop, in finder and in itunes as 'audio cd' as soon as it tried to get the name from gracenote... it has disappeared from all 3 locations. I use the disk utility to eject the cd and put it straight back in again and its fine. Highly frustrating for a brand new shiny toy.

I want to put in my 2 cents as well in hopes that Apple will start to notice this based on the number of people that are posting the problem. I am having the same problem, which I will describe as well as to what I have seen. I have iTunes open already and insert an audio CD. It appears briefly on the desktop as "Audio CD" and then iTunes accesses information on the CD from the web. It then looses the information and the disk and the CD unmounts completely in the finder. I am certain of the timing, as one CD I inserted had multiple different possible matches found and when I chose one, it unmounted as soon as I chose the right item from the the dialog box. It happens sporadically with no pattern that I can see. Some disks work and others do not. I have been keeping Disk Utility open and when it happens, I just click on the CD in there and click on "Mount Disk" and then iTunes proceeds to import it just fine and then ejects it, as I have set the options. It started to happen after I upgraded to Leopard and also iTunes 7.5. I don't think I tried to import anything between doing those 2 updates.

Happens to me on just about every CD 😟

when I chose one, it unmounted as soon as I chose the right item

Good point, Brent. I'd noticed the same -- I wonder if this is a problem switching from "Audio CD" to whatever name iTunes got from CDDB?

I have been keeping Disk Utility open and when it happens, I just ... click on "Mount Disk"

Nice tip ... until Apple gets off its behind and fixes this.

I just got my imac last week.
everything is going great. I am really in love with this thing.
I'm running Leopard, with no problems really. But iTunes....

1 out of 5 of the cds don't want to import. The exact same thing happens to me. It shows that its accessing Gracenotes, goes to import, then...
nothing.
the cd disappears from the desktop. the songs disappear from itunes, and I have to manually eject the disk. If I put it back in, it works fine.

Also, sometimes iTunes freezes up and I have to force quit it. This has only happened a few times, and since I updated Leopard Friday, this hasn't happened again.

This happens on both my PowerBook G4 and my Core 2 Duo Mac Mini, both running iTunes 7.5 and Leopard 10.5.1, so I'd guess it's not hardware or Intel/PPC related. Some additional information, just in case it helps someone at Apple solve the problem ... 😉

I've noticed that when the CD eventually appears on the desktop after a reboot or reinsert, it's correctly named (e.g. "The Song Remains The Same (Disc 2)" in my case) so I'd guess that the details have been retrieved and stored correctly prior to the CD "disappearing".

I wonder if the CD is unmounted and remounted under the album name and it's the latter that's failing?

Also, I've noticed that the first CD in any ripping session is fine, it's always the second that fails.

Happens to me as well.

The first CD is fine.

For subsequent CDs in the same session, it disappears at first, I eject the CD using the keyboard, then reinsert it ... and the CD is visible and can be imported.

After I import a CD, it doesn't matter if I eject it using the keyboard or clicking on the CD entry on the left side of the iTunes window ... the next inserted CD will disappear and I'll have to eject it and reinsert it in order to see the contents and import it.

This tip worked for me for one CD and then upon insertion of next CD, same old problem, access Gracenotes and then CD disappeared. I then went and checked "Ask me to import CD" in iTunes pref. because I remember that was the default after I installed 10.5 and itunes 7.5. Was finally able to mount cd and import. Very weird. Thanks for the tip. This is very frustrating but "glad" to see I'm not the only one frustrated.

I'm also having this very problem! Mac is only a week old and i'm trying to update my library with all my girlfreinds CD's. What a pain as it's now happening with every disc.

One thing i'm doing diffrently is to eject the stuck disc I select a playlist and click burn Disc.
This the ejects the lost disc, Now cancel that burn when it asks for a blank.

Slip the audio back in and 9 time out of 10 it will now work!

Sort it out Apple.

Yep, having the same problem here. Running 10.5.1 and iTunes 7.5 on iMac G5. It seems to happen to me when I click "Yes" to import, but then switch to my music library to browse around while the CD is trying to import. The CD stops spinning, the disc disappears from my list of devices and everything goes quiet. I have to eject the CD and import again. When I import again, I just leave the mounted device highlighted and watch the songs import without going to my music library.
