CD doesn't import when I click "import"

When I stick a blank CD in that I do not have in my library, SOMETIMES, after it asks me if I want to import and I agree, the CD disappears from under "Devices" and does not import. Only when I eject and reinsert does it import (after asking me if i want to import it). This happens intermittently.

This is happening to me on two computers, a 14" iBook G4 (1.42 GHz) and a 1.25 GHz G4 Mac Mini (both running 10.5.1 and iTunes 7.5). In addition to the CDs sometimes not mounting (until I run Disk Utility), or disappearing a few seconds after mounting, iTunes often hangs (i.e., spinning beach ball) before I can do an import. If I try to preview tracks (either by double-clicking on the track name or by using the on-screen controls) or join tracks or rename tracks, with almost every CD I have to perform a force quit 4 or 5 times. Once I begin the import, iTunes runs fine.

I have tried changing preferences, deleting plist files, and reinstalling iTunes. No joy.

In 21 years of Mac use, I think this may be the consistently most annoying problem I've encountered in Apple software (which speaks well for Apple but badly for Leopard). I look forward to Apple's swift remediation.

Yet another person with the latest OS and iTunes with the same problem. I get this about 10 to 20% of the time -- dozens of times so far. Ejecting and reinserting the disk almost always fixes things.

I've had two additional problems in the course of importing a few hundred CDs. First, iTunes will periodically hang, requiring me to shut down the system to get around the spinning disk of doom.

Second, on one occasion a disk failed to eject after import. The disk wasn't damaged -- it read OK and looked fine. Apple has instructions using a paper clip to center the disk -- which did not work for me. I was eventually able to use an extremely thin set of tweezers to surgically remove the disk.

I'm a recent not-quite-yet-a-convert to Mac. Perhaps someone can advise me if there is a direct way to report bugs to Apple?

I'm having the same problem since I upgraded to Leopard.

When I insert a CD, the track names are found and listed and I'm asked if i want to import CD. I pick "YES" and the disk disappears from my list of drives. I eject the disk, put in in again and start the process over again, and it works.

I'm not holding my breath for this to be addressed by Apple, I'm still waiting for the fix for the popping and clicking of the external speakers since I upgraded to 10.4.9. I waited thinking that because Apple had so many complaints they'd fix it in Leopard.

No such luck.

I just tried importing a CD from an external drive and had the same problem.

Just to let you know, I had to go back to Tiger.

I had an issue with my harddrive icon disappearing from my desktop, and not showing up in Finder. It did this on all three of the profiles that I have on my iMac.
After staying on the phone with Apple people for 3 hours, archiving, checking preferences, etc, they advised me to erase and reinstall Leopard.
I asked if this would happen again, and when will Apple release a fix for this. They said they hadn't heard of the problem as being widespread. Like it was something I did.

Whatever.

I asked them about the iTunes issue, thinking that it could be a mounting problem, but even the product specialist (who I waited on hold for for 45 minutes) didn't help me with that.

I don't know. These issues are minor compared to some that I have encountered with Windows. But, I just bought this computer two weeks ago. Brand new.
If my Toshiba laptop had come out of the box with the "My Computer" icon vanished, and some crucial programs having problems, I would have returned it.
But this machine is so **** pretty. I'm going to hold off on re-installing Leopard until they release a fix for the many problems that seem to be happening.

I just thought that you guys might want to know that the iTunes issue may not be the only thing to go wrong. If this is in fact a mounting issue, then other things might go wrong as well.

But since I went back to Tiger, the only problems I've had are missing the way Leopard looks.

I'm waiting, I guess.

Brand new Macbook Pro with 10.5.1 and I have the same problem. I also keep Disk Utility open to manually mount the CD when it fails.

My guess is it's unmounting the CD, deleting the mount point called "Audio CD", fingering the album name to create a new mount point, then is issuing the mount command to mount the CD to the new mount point.

This may just be a timing issue between the CDDB reader and the code remounting under the album name given it by the db checker. Since when manually selecting the audio cd in Disk Utility and mounting it after it fails on insert, it immediately gives you the album name and mounts the cd.

I can't get it to fail on a ripped CD (which means the data is already saved locally). Can anyone get this to fail with an already ripped CD?

Same problem here. Note that to get the CD to read again, you don't need to eject it from Disk Utility. Simply CTRL-Click the Audio CD and select "Mount Audio CD" and the CD will appear again. Saves a step of having to eject & re-insert the CD.

Perhaps this problem has something to do with the "Power Save" feature of the drive? I noticed that if I'm idle for a while it spins down and idles the drive as well.

Happens to me too. Makes importing music into library impossible. One reason I bought this new big shiny iMac with its huge hard drive (and the huge iPod Classic to go with it) was so I could expand my music library. But since Leopard makes CDs disappear as soon as Grace Database query finishes, it's all I can do to eject my CDs. Importing music into iTunes? A sad little pipe-dream, now.

after hearing all of these complaints and apparent screw-up on Apple's part in the software compatible area - i am holding off purchasing a new Macbook Pro with all the pretty lights and buttons-!! i LOVE my music collection and the freedom to mix it up as i please with my iBoook and Tiger! now it seems that i have iTunes 7.5 (not sure how i got it; i did no updates recently) but haven't tried to Import/Burn yet. think i'll see what happens...

Dec 29, 2007 12:47 PM in response to Larry Singer

wow. not a single prob with anything....my iTunes 7.5 works just fine with Tiger! hmm. think i'll stay in the 'lagging behind' on modern-day technology for a while until this mess is fixed...

Apple's got a bad load of crap on their hands now, when their best and latest OS is consistently leaving their customers and Members very annoyed and demanding answers-! bad for business....!
