I was going to buy the PowerMac G5 Dual 2.7gigahertz but just noticed they release a New PowerMac Dual Core 2.3gigahertz computer. My question is which one is faster?

Hmm... So in your opinion do you think that the new Dual Core would be slower than the old Dual Processor 2.7 gigahertz? That's what it would seem like from this study.
My opinion is that either one is an excellent computer.
I agree, but if I'm going to spend $2000-$3000 I want the one that is going to be a better performer.
Hi Hilary;
I think there is more then just speed as to what makes a good computer. In comparing the Dual Core 2.3 to the Dual 2.7 one thing I notice right away is that the Dual Core 2.3 has a PCI Express bus that allows it to use newer graphics cards.
Now granted if you are very heavily committed to PCI then PCI Express is going to be an additional cost for you.

As I read the specs that Templeton Peck provided, it looks to me that the Dual 2.7 GHz will be faster than the new dualcore 2.3 GHz. You may want to see what kind of price you can get the 2.7 model for, assuming there will be a price drop on that model. You should be able to save even more if you can find a refurbished 2.7. Then decide where you get the biggest bang for the buck.

Hi Hilary ---
I would suggest that you look to see whether the latest machines run cooler. The dual Macs do run somewhat hot; not that it causes any problems. The latest machines do have the latest improvements. Whether the new 2.3 dual core is faster than the previous dual 2.7, I cannot answer but if you want to be certain (and money is no object), then get the quad 2.5.
However, whatever machine you decide on I'm sure you will be happy with it; after all, its a MAC !!!

Don't the dual-cores share the same frontside bus? If so then I think the dual 2.7 is most certainly faster than the new dual-core 2.3 (although I'm sure the 1mb L2 cache on the new ones helps somewhat).
The dual 2.7 came down $100 from what it was before, I believe.

My understanding is that the Dual Cores will be faster in single application tasks, say rendering. While Dual Processors will be faster at multiple tasks. In other words, it depends on how you use your computer. If you are constantly multi-tasking with some heavy duty apps, then a Dual Processor will be "faster". If you typically do one processor intensive task at a time, then Dual Core will be faster. Or so I understand. Of course you can solve this riddle by simply getting the Dual Core Dual Processor Mac!!

Yeah, I run a graphic design company so I'm constantly mult-tasking. Jumping back and forth from design program to web design programs to office and so-on and so-forth.
I think I'm going to drop in and buy the dual processor dual-core big dog.

Excellent choice! That's the way to go. Time is money.
It looks like from if you did side by side comparisons, the 2.3DC will be almost the same as the old DP2.7 and the 2.0DC is almost the same as the old DP 2.5. as for people doing side by sides, i dont think youll be able to tell the difference between the two too much unless your comparing a 2.0 with a old DP 2.7
I am in this same situation myself......
Dual 2.7 or DC 2.3 hmmmmmmm......
but I think im just gonna go all out with the Quad 🙂
BTW retail value on a Dual 2.7 now is $2,799, down from the $2,999

Basically what it boils down to is either stay with the old architecture and maybe get a little bit more speed or go with the new achitecture and run the new standard.
I would rather go with the new standard and have all the speed. I'm going with the Quad also.

Hey, who callin' old!! You just hurt my G5's feelings...
The quad sounds really nice. I'm waiting for the holidays to come and go and some good reports on these forums before I get my quad. On paper they rock, I want to see what they can really do on someone's desk first. Winter is arriving soon and I could use another heater next to my 2.7 on a DVi switch. Can you imagine the breakers I'd have to install for those two?

Which is Faster: PM G5 Dual 2.7G or New PM Dual Core 2.3G?
