jpegs from adobe lightroom causing finder, iphoto, mail, preview, crashes!

This post issue started in the DOCK and FINDER catagory but it is more wide spread so I've started a thread in here as well.

Here's the problem...
It seems certain jpegs and other image files that had metadata added in Adobe's Lightroom running on TIGER will now crash apps like PREVIEW, iPHOTO, MAIL, and even the FINDER if you try and get info on the pic (which by the way doesn't support an icon of the picture in any finder view).

Just got off the phone with Apple about this and they say it's NOT a known issue yet and suggested that I downgrade to TIGER. What a headache!!!! They're still jpegs!!!

Can you tell me how to disable previews in Finder? I can't find it in preferences. Thanks

This all reminds me too much of my days with Microsoft. First one bug and then the next consumes your day.

In Finder, choose View -> View Options... (or press Command-J), uncheck "preview instead of icon" and, if you are in colums mode, "show preview column" (the exact phrases may differ, my OS runs in French and I am "re-translating" now 😉

That works for me too, but I still can't the the thumbnail of the picture in the finder.

I don't think it is a problem of Lightroom, I think it is a bug in how JPEGs or attributes are handeled.
I downloaded sample images of the new Ricoh digital camera and see those effects with that pictures too, which are supposed to be unaltered images right out of the camera.
I hoped Quicktime 7.3 would solve this, but it didn't. I filed a bug and hope for the best now.

If you happen to have Microsoft Office for Mac on your Mac, the mail program will handle jpegs without problem.

Not much of a help, but some.

Maybe Microsoft will come out with an office version of Finder. 🙂

A follow on to the Office solution.

If the receiver uses Leopard, I-mail will not even show him the message.

If he opens it in Office, he gets the message, a small copy in-line and can open the jpeg itself without a problem.

Thanks for finding the solution! Do you have any idea about how to do this without re-compress the JPEG file? I don't want to lose quality. And any batch process to perform the solution, I have too many photos to change.

Adobe just released LIGHTROOM update 1.3. The upgrade didn't solve my problems with this issue! It's now more a fact than ever that APPLE will have to deal with this issue. That's if they want too!
And seeing Apple just released an update to LEOPARD which didn't resolve the issue we may be stuck with this problem for awhile ;(

Yes, me as well. This is really starting to suck as I have hundreds of photo's that are causing this crashing and all that.

Thanks for the research - what I found by following your steps was that all I have to do is open Bridge, select the pictures I want, right click and choose develop settings -> camera raw defaults. Then when you look into the camera-raw-saved-settings, you'll see a bunch of stuff in there....all the defaults. My opinion is that this is a iPhoto problem also - they need to figure out how to read all the information, not just what they tested with.

I have over 10,000 photos but only about 40 folders. I only had to do this operation 40 times instead of 10,000 file info operations so it was manageable.

This also allowed finder to show the icons correctly.....
Anyway, my $0.02.

Sounds like you were able to manage this by selecting several photos at once in Bridge. I'm not a regular Bridge user, so I was unaware you could do this with multiple files. Sounds great!

This has happened me also, only noticed it in Leonard though. I'll make a zipped jpeg available to Apple if they'd like to see one in action. I've kept that baby for posterity ...

I have dugg it too! I desperately want them to fix this! I can't even import one photo in iphoto because of this!
