Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

iSync and Palm Treo 660 will not sync.

Yesterday I noticed that iSync was not copying contacts from my 10.5 install to my phone. (I'm not sure if contacts were being copied from the phone to the computer.) After screwing around with it for a while, I used the Reset Sync History in iSync prefs, enabling the "Erase data on device then sync" option, hoping that would force it to copy something to the phone, but after I did that, the iSync conduit times out, reporting "Timeout waiting for Sync Engine" in the log.

I know there have been a lot of problems with syncing in general under Leopard, but I haven't seen this specific issue reported, so I wanted to throw my hat in to the ring, both to make sure the dev team is working on this, and in the vain hope that someone has a workaround. 😝

The only way for users to report such behavior is to contact an AppleCare representative at (800) APL CARE, wait—oh, I don't know: maybe 45 minutes on hold—until a representative is available, and go through the process of attempting to correct the problem, then generating a case number.

If you want to send me the HotSync log from one of these failed attempts, I will push it in the right direction. But, it may be some time before the problem is diagnosed and corrected. In the interim, you can remove your device, reconnect or re-pair it, re-enable Palm synchronization in iSync and try again, but there is little else that you can do to correct it.

Well, I re-paired the phone in iSync, and told it to erase the data on the device, then copy over the data from Address Book. When I synced, no errors were reported, but I now I have no contact information on my phone. This is what the log shows:

*iSync Conduit starting 07.11.03 17.04.19*
*iSync Conduit: received NULL message, disconnecting... 07.11.03 17.04.25*
*OK iSync Conduit*

… which I believe is the same error other people have been getting.

Looks like I'm just waiting around for the fix. I hope it happens soon, since now I have nothing on my phone, and no way to get anything on there. 😟

One user with a reasonably similar configuration reported that he was able to synchronize contacts by temporarily disabling Calendars in the drop down configuration pane for his Treo, then synchronize events and tasks by temporarily disabling Contacts in that same pane, after re-enabling Calendars.

Can you attempt that rather clumsy process, and see if it addresses the issue?

Well, I had previously been syncing only contacts, so I disabled that, and tried syncing only calendars, which worked. Then I tried syncing only contacts again, and got no love. Then I tried syncing both contacts and calenders simultaneously, but that still didn't sync my contacts. Here are the logs from those syncs:

*iSync Conduit starting 07.11.03 17.39.7*
*OK iSync Conduit*

*iSync Conduit starting 07.11.03 17.40.56*
*iSync Conduit: received NULL message, disconnecting... 07.11.03 17.41.5*
*OK iSync Conduit*

*iSync Conduit starting 07.11.03 17.42.53*
*iSync Conduit: received NULL message, disconnecting... 07.11.03 17.42.59*
*OK iSync Conduit*

It seems that any attempt to sync contacts produces the NULL message.

I have a Palm Treo 650, and had the same experience. iSync wiped out all my contacts and calendars. Disabling did not make any difference. I got a slightly different log:

iSync Conduit starting 11/4/07 9:11:06 PM
Timeout waiting for Sync Engine, exiting 11/4/07 9:16:30 PM
iSync Conduit synchronization failed
“iSync Conduit” failed (error = #-1)

Between this and how really bad the new iCal is, I'm looking for a new calendar. Any recommendations?

I am experiencing the exact same issue. MacBook Pro 1.83 GHz Core Duo, Palm Desktop (have tried both the version that came with my Treo, as well as the latest version available from Palm.com), Sprint Treo 755p. I get the "iSync received NULL message" error. I tried disabling contact sync and only syncing calendars/tasks; that worked just fine. Then I tried disabling calendar/tasks sync and only syncing contacts; that did not work.

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Is there an Unfiled calendar in iCal? Is that calendar designated in the drop-down configuration pane for you device in iSync as the one in which to place events created on your Palm device? Is that calendar either enabled because All is selected in the Calendars scrollable list on that pane, or because it is one of several selected?

I have exactly the same problem. Thank you for the hint, now I can at least sync iCal by disabling Address Book syncing. The problem clearly lies with Address Book: it doesn't sync and somehow prevents iCal from syncing. I noticed that before, when I had both enabled, the progress indicator said "syncing Adress Book" and then moved on to Memos (or whatever came next), skipping Calendar/Datebook.

I do hope this bug will be fixed soon, but in the interval I can live with only syncing my calendar. This is essential. My address book on the other hand doesn't change that often and I can solve the issue by bluetoothing contacts back and forth.

I have been having the same headache trying to sync my Treo 700p in Leopard. (It worked just fine in Tiger.) The problem is with the iSync conduit. I have spoken with tech spt at Palm and Apple. Palm says they are working on an update for the HotSync Manager. The Apple tech - who was surprised to see so much discussion traffic on this problem - said to post a comment on this board to get the attention of Apple engineers so they can do the same with iSync. So ...

APPLE ENGINEERS - Please update the iSync Conduit so that Palm devices will sync properly with Leopard apps. ASAP.

Thank you.

That's an interesting directive from an AppleCare representative. With the exception of a set of Apple employees specifically designated as hosts or moderators, and a handful of key Apple employees, you won't find them browsing or posting in Apple Discussions. You might reasonably argue that they should, but I am telling you that they don't.

It is the job of an AppleCare representative to diagnose your issue and create a case, then escalate the problem until it catches the attention of those responsible for identifying and correcting it. Clearly, your representative has failed to do so. If you were given a case number, call back and ask for an update. If you were not, call back and initiate a case.

The several issues involved here are far too complex to simply diagnose as the "…problem is with the iSync conduit." There are a number of issues involved, not all of which relate to the conduit and none of which can be resolved by end users. There are at least four issues relating to Palm devices involved: one with Mac OS X 10.4.9 through 10.4.11, and the other three with Mac OS X 10.5 and later. A substantial change to synchronization code in iCal also looms large as an issue. More are likely to be discovered in the next few weeks.

The most meaningful impact you can have on the issue at your level in the 'hierarchy' is to…

• backup your contact, event and task data, inspecting it frequently for data corruption or other issues before doing so, so as not to back up corrupted data
• use the workaround for Mac OS X 10.5.x and iSync 3 users of turning off Contacts in the iSync device configuration pane to synchronize events and tasks, and turning off Calendars to synchronize contacts
• call (800) APL CARE to file a case if in the US, or to do the equivalent if located in another nation
• developers can file RADAR bug reports concerning issues they discover and can reproduce

Same issue here

iSync Conduit: received NULL message, disconnecting...

Hotsync runs through everything then says Hotsync was interrupted. Checking the log reveals iSync conduit failure. Mine was working great for a few days then stopped. I'm trying to determine what events led to the failure.

I have a 755p using USB cable; Hotsync Manager 3.2.1; iSync 3.0 (568.0)

I'll let you know if I find anything.

FYI: my wife has a MBP running leopard also with a 755p syncing just fine. I loaded both at same time and installed palm hotsync at same time.
