Macintosh HD icon is not on my Desktop or visible from the Finder

After upgrading to Leopard, the "*Macintosh HD*" icon does not show up on the Desktop or in the Finder. Not even in the Finder under my Machine's name.

The drive exists - since I'm typing this from a workable install of Leopard. But it doesn't show up in the Finder.

Using GetFileInfo (from the Developer Tools folder) I can see that the Visibility flag is set. If I turn that flag off, the drive reappears until I bring up a Finder window and select the drive. Then it is gone and something has reset the "V" extended attribute flag.

Anyone else experiencing this fun?

Hi Guys

--- Any news? Any hope about this invisible icon thing? ---

PS: after reading all the threads about this problem and Google it over and over again I just find one useful thing which make the ICON appear on desktop and once you click on it, it will dissipater but at least you can get to your diver and be happy it's there 😀

type this in terminal follow by very hard return:

sudo chflags nohidden /Volumes/"NameOfDrive"

Hm, I dunno. All I can say is it works for me. If I add write permission back the drive will disappear again but without write permission it's fine. Anyone else tried this?

Hi guys,

I have the same problem. I discovered that if you enter as Root user you can make visible Hd (I used Rage Macintosh), them you can entry with your "standard or admin. account" and HD is visible. The problem is that you have to keep active your root user. As soon as you deactivate your root user HD dissapears.

Sorry for my bad english.

Óscar.

I just tried something. I made sure my root drive (Macintosh HD) was visible - 'v' flag is low.

I then installed a new copy of OS X on another partition of my internal drive, call it Leopard. I was using that partition for Windows but decided to blow it away for this test.

Installing OS X 10.5 went as smooth as silk on Leopard. But, what was strange was the Macintosh HD did not show up on my desktop. In fact both the 'C' and 'V' flags were set. Changing them back to 'c' and 'v' made the drive reappear, but within a few minutes the 'V' flag was reset again. So, I changed it back and again after a few minutes it was set back to high. I haven't done an iosnoop, but I bet the culprit will be Spotlight again. Why this hits some and not others, I wish I knew.

Just out of curiosity, is this same "V,v" problem causing other things to be grey'd out on my Mac? ie: uploading a photo on my website and have the option to upload it from iPhoto grey'd out .. .if so, would the sudo codes you meantioned correct this so i dont have to keep dragging photos to the desktop everytime to be able to upload them on sites?
