Trying to import video from Sony DCR-TRV103

I was hoping someone could help me out in importing some video from my Sony TRV103.

I'm using iMovie '08 (7.1) running on Leopard with a new iMac alum 24".
I'm connecting the ilink port on the camera with a 4pin to 6pin firewire cable. When I turn on the camera, iMovie instantly recognizes the camera with a blue movie screen with a "Import From Sony DCR-TRV103 (DV) message at the top. I can control the camera with play, rewind, etc, but if I hit play, I see the movie playing ok on my camera but nothing shows up on the iMac.
Hitting "auto import" ends up importing 1 to 2 seconds of video and I get nothing but one screen of pink boxes.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just confirmed from another post that people are having similar issues with 8mm DV cameras.

Strange that we can import using the Hi-8 tapes but all the other regular 8mm tapes don't work now.

I'm also having a similar issue with my sony TRV22E but I can't even get the mac to recognise the camera but it will pick up the USB photos when I switch it from VCR to camera. Please help if you can

I am importing from that model with no problem even as I read this - into a new 24 inch imac - the tape is the combo hi8/digital so I can't explain it.

I am having the same problem. I can import my tapes that are recorded on Hi8, but the import stops after 2 seconds for the plain 8 tapes.I am connecting my Sony DCR-TRV103 with the same fire wire for both types of tapes. Has anyone found a way around this problem?

Add me to the list of people with this problem. Cannot get it to work on iMovie '06 on a G5 iMac at all and have the two second problem on iMovie 08 on my Mac Book Pro. Thoughts?

I have a new twist on this one. Setup is identical to BKRud's. I was able to auto import video from my Hi8 tape for about 20 minutes using the auto import feature. Halfway through the tape, the import stopped and iMovie rewound the tape. The remaining 40 minutes of tape only showed blue screen in iMovie, while displaying in the viewfinder. The tape is showing the "Digital 8" icon as the format type, but iMovie will not recognize it.

I do not believe that the tape was shot in a different format for the first half vs. the second (or if it is even possible to do that with the TRV103).

I suggest you try manual import.
