LOVE Tiger, but anybody else have new soft "beeps" now?

Tiger is lightning. I couldn't believe how fast I reboot.
I did the archive and install.

BUT... (ain't there always?) uhhh... anybody else hear a very soft, steady rhythmic "beeping" (almost like a countdown) inside their G5 (2.5 for me)?

I heard this "new" sound immediately when the mute went on the office TV (plus my G5 is right up on my desk). It's soft but can't say I care for it.

Again it's very steady, almost like a countdown. Can't hear it over much, but I sure don't like my office quiet (kids away, TV off) as it gets into my head.

I have the same beep on my 1.8 dual G5, since the upgrade, it becomes particularly annoying and persistant when loading and/or playing Call of Duty or any other graphic intensive app, I tried System Load app but this could not cause the noise to occur like most games do. CHUD tools did nothing with; allow napping. I have a radeon 9600xt. I never had this problem with Panther.

I also experienced the strange digital beeps after upgrading to tiger.
After some experimentation I found that changing the processor performance to
automatic instead of highest eliminated them.
I realise this is a workaround and not a solution. But if the beeps are annoying you, you may want to do the same until we find out more.

Regards,

Joe

Just want to say me too.

My G5 (2ghz, Radeon 9600) had made these noises back when I first got it, and first had Panther. The CHUD tools would help (turn off Allow Nap), but subsequent Panther updates seemed to fix it.

Now, Tiger has brought the power supply noises back, in full force. As was said, it's much louder when doing something graphic intensive (Playing Halo, playing with Core Image, etc.)

I hope whatever they put in Panther, they can put back into tiger!

What are CHUD tools?

Computer Hardware Understanding Development Tools (CHUD Tools)

The CHUD Tools are applications and tools for measuring and optimizing software performance on Mac OS X as well as for hardware bringup and system benchmarking.

The CHUD Tools are delivered as a part of the Xcode Tools for Tiger.

Read more here:
http://developer.apple.com/tools/performance/overview.html

When you install CHUD tools, you get a new System Preference pane, called Processor. In there you can disable NAP. Apple does not recommend doing this. Your fans speed up, but you get rid of the crickets. I have tried it, and it works, but I do not want my processors or fans going bananas, so I will wait for Apple or somebody else to come with an other solution.

I can not hear the noises right now, when the computer is doing nothing, but every time I try to view the new RSS Visualizer in Tiger, the crickets start singing!

I found an interesting thread at the MacNN forums:
http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?t=254091

First of all, run repair disk permissions. Then, delete your power management file in Library. Restart (your machine may actually crash), and it should be gone on boot.

Do they mean this file? com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file

Does your Power Mac G5 still make cricket sounds when viewing RSS Visualizer, after doing as told in the MacNN thread? If your problems were fixed...
b please
tell us exactly what you did!

This electrical chirping (beeping) was present during the early days of Panther too (10.3.4, 10.3.5). It was gone in 10.3.6 through 10.3.9. When upgrading to Tiger, the chirping has come back. As you say, turning off NAP does the trick, but it is not smart to do that. Your processors rise to the max temperature and stays there (80° celsius), until your turn on NAP again. Apple has done major changes under the hood (in the kernel) of Mac OS X Tiger. Read more about that here: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10.4.ars/4

I believe some of these changes may be the reason why the chirping is back.
