LOVE Tiger, but anybody else have new soft "beeps" now?

Tiger is lightning. I couldn't believe how fast I reboot.
I did the archive and install.

BUT... (ain't there always?) uhhh... anybody else hear a very soft, steady rhythmic "beeping" (almost like a countdown) inside their G5 (2.5 for me)?

I heard this "new" sound immediately when the mute went on the office TV (plus my G5 is right up on my desk). It's soft but can't say I care for it.

Again it's very steady, almost like a countdown. Can't hear it over much, but I sure don't like my office quiet (kids away, TV off) as it gets into my head.

The temperature does not rise to the maximum and stay there when the NAP function is disabled. Does it rise? Yes. Is it harmful? No. Realize that these machines have so many safeguards for overheating that it is ridiculous. I have had my NAP function disabled for quite some time and have had only a slight increase in temperature (about 20ºF), no increase in fan use and it still runs cooler than other G5 temperature benchmarks I have seen. I even had a technician out to my office to make sure that the temperatures were ok and while he said Apple has not released definitive benchmarks for temperature that I needn't worry because if the thing ever did get too hot, not only would it shut itself down it would sound like an airplane was landing in my office. I was hearing the sounds whenever I moved the mouse and the beeping was constant. Try listening to that through some powered studio monitor speakers!! Also, I am still running 10.3.7 and there is not a fix in there for the beeping...at least for me. The reason Apple does not recommend disabing the NAP function is because they have not tested these machines with it disabled for extended periods of time. However, note that it is something that with the CHUD tools installed appears right in your system preferences pane so it's not like rocket science trying to find it.

If you had read through this thread before you wrote that, you could have seen that we already have explained what CHUD tools are, and that when you install it, you get a preference pane called Processor in System Preferences.

We never said you needed rocket science to find it 😉

I am calm. I just wanted you to know that we already had explained what CHUD tools are, and where you turn on/off NAP.

However, note that it is something that with the CHUD tools installed appears right in your system preferences pane so it's not like rocket science trying to find it.

To me, that sounds like mocking of those who do not understand where to find CHUD tools, especially since we already had explained it. If that was not the intention, I apologize 🙂

Sorry for the miscommunication. The rocket science thing was something that the tech told me trying to illustrate that since the function is something that is easily accessible through the prefences pane that it isn't something that is going to fry your machine. He was just illustrating that most things that have a GUI to get to aren't going to be harmful. They'd make it a lot harder to find!

No hard feelings! 😉

Does everyone experiencing this have some form of ATI 9600 in their machines? Does any activity make the noise worse?

My dual 2.5 has been ok noise wise since the update. I have an NVIDIA 6800 GT. Some noises that do seem to occur more under Tiger are whines from the processor and the revving fans are back (albeit not at really bad levels).

I recorded the sound and sent it to tech support (after an hour on the phone trying to figure out the problem). The tech sent the file to an engineer who said it is normal. The 2.5 and 2.7 share the same power supply so the sound will be on both machines.

What?! This is most certainly NOT acceptable! 😟 Did you tell them that the sound was not there in Panther 10.3.5 through 10.3.9. Did you ask them why this sound came back in Tiger?

Stay on him, Ron! 😉

Yeah, "acceptable" sounds like the "acceptable level of mouse hair and droppings in a can of spaghettios" w/ the govt.

We've got Apple by the "nads" as EVERYONE knows Tiger 10.4 introduced these to our PM G5's. Please keep us posted.

T, whose typing this is quiet house and the rhythmic beep sure is annoying.
