Electric Shock

Hello all, I am a major Mac user, and I understand this forum is for Macs only, but I have a question about my HP PC that kind of applies to certain Mac users. Recently, when my PC is running and I touch the Power supply screws on the back or the USB, Firewire, and sound ports on the front I receive a slight electric shock! The only hardware changes I've made to the computer were the installation of a floppy drive a while back and the upgrade of the memory to 1GB. I thought maybe the motherboard was shorting, but I do not get shocked by touching the side of the case which is metal. I also do not get shocked by touch the metal parts of the drive cage while the computer is running. I've read where people with PowerBook G4, MacBook, MacBook Pro, etc. have had problems similar to this where they sometimes receive electric shocks. Does anybody know what might cause these electric shocks?

20" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz and [ iMac G3 400 MHz Mac OS 10.3.9, 9.2.2 ], Mac OS X (10.4.10), intel iMac specs: 250GB HD, 128 MB ATI X1600 Graphics, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, DVD+-RW

Hi, on your Floppy Drive installion did you maybe shave a wire/cable with either a screw or a metal bracket? that is assuming before your recent installions all was well! Also check out your power supply EARTH. Could also be an EARTH within your computer tower, maybe use a "meter" to test EARTH and also Leakages..L

Unfortunately, our entire house is not properly grounded. We only have a Hot and a Neutral wire on our house wiring. My iMac is located upstairs on a different outlet than the PC, and it does not give off any small electric shocks when I touch its ports. I just went back downstairs where the PC is, and I touched the ports with it turned off, then I turned it on and received a slight shock. I was able to keep my finger on it though without any pain. After this recent event of getting a little shock, I remembered that about a year ago the sound cable on the back of the computer gave me a little shock. One day it stopped giving me a shock and then went back to doing it again. Seems kind of strange doesn't it? The computer runs just fine despite this little problem. The monitor never messes up, and I don't receive any errors. I just plugged in one of my Flash Drives to the PC where it shocks me and the drive was recognized without any problems. Could this just be normal for these ports to give off a slight electric jolt or is there something really seriously wrong?

Hi, heres a scenario -> wet hands, non grounded/earthed electrical appliance this catagory includes computers ----->D A N G E R
You mentioned your sound cable! are the Speakers USB powered or do they have their own power supply? -> Try the PC on another power supply socket, are you using an old surge protector? Try just the PC, Monitor-K/B & Mouse connected..I would use a volt meter to test for power leakages -> Not Fingers
Either way Have your PC checked out asap -- L

Hi, somehow I beg to differ regarding the "Not Hurting it" comment, any electrical/electronic item that has either an Earthing/Grounding Issue or Possible Lethal Voltage Leak is in someway being Harmed"
Maybe an early demise for the M/Board, HD, or other boards, optical drives, externals plugged into USBs etc etc etc.. If as you say it is relatively new - send or take it back to the supplier for a thorough check out...I apprenticed in the good old days of television & radio (valves etc) -> any leakage/earthing issue was potentially lethal and the same goes for to-days computers etc. ..L

A friend of mine re-wired the plug the computer is connected to about 2 years ago. The polarity that I know of is correct, but next time I see my friend I'm going to ask him to check this problem out. He knows quite a bit about electricity. The house not being grounded is a problem that needs fixed, but this is a project that is too big to take on at once.

I'm going to mark this question as answered because your replies basically tell me what the problem could be. I thank you all for that. It is possible that I could be imagining this. Sometimes I feel like I'm getting shocked by something metal, touch it again and I don't feel anything. Seems strange. Could be just that the computer is building up static somehow and holding it until the computer is shut off. I don't feel like I'm in much danger considering that I've had the computer for 2 years and have never had any major problem with it. Since getting my Mac, I only use the PC every once in a while. I'll use it even less when I install Windows XP on my iMac. To me this is just a little project that my friend and I will have to work on. If he comes over soon, I'll have him test it and see what he thinks. I'll try to remember to post a new reply of what his verdict is if he comes over shortly.

Thanks.
