New Macbook - Keyboard freezes

Hi,

I bought a new 'Santa Rosa' Macbook on 11-2-07 and have been enjoying the process of setting it up and getting familiar with Leopard.

One thing disturbs me though: Periodically as I have used it for the last two days, the keyboard will freeze, allowing no text input. I can still move the mouse, click on windows and start/stop programs, but the keyboard acts as if it's dead. The caps-lock light won't even come on.

This condition lasts for a minute or two and then normal operation resumes. It happens every few hours (three times in six hours of use yesterday, two or three times today). I haven't been able to correlate this with any particular thing I'm doing, either when it begins or ends.

What's going on?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Eric

After a re-installation of Leopard, firmware and software updates, battery resets, sleep mode adjustments and everything else even considered remotely helpful to fix this agonizing problem, I finally sent my laptop in to Apple Care. Apple replaced the top case assembly (keyboard, trackpad and all the business around it). This fixed every problem I had. FINALLY satisfied and the MacBook works like a charm.

Your post on this "PROCESS HASFORKED" business is the most helpful I've found but although I've tried what you suggest, it doesn't do the trick for me. In my case it isn't related to the keyboard (afaik) but something else, a process that keeps trying to start up, fails, and then tries again.

I'm getting similar "PROCESS HASFORKED" console messages but in my case, the "Sender" you mention in your post comes up as com.apple.SystemStarter [17]

Trashing it doesn't make any difference.

Anyone have any other ideas? The full message I'm getting is:

Break on _THE_PROCESS_HAS_FORKED_AND_YOU_CANNOT_USE_THIS_COREFOUNDATION_FUNCTIONALITY___Y OU_MUST_EXEC_() to debug.
The process has forked and you cannot use this CoreFoundation functionality safely. You MUST exec().

Just like that, first in upper case and then in lower case. Then it repeats endlessly.

In the Mac OSX manual I found this interesting page: http://tinyurl.com/62u4f3

From there I worked out that the problem is in this folder:

/Library/StartupItems/

In there are the User-installed startup items. I trashed them all. Then rebooted.

Problem solved!

Those "PROCESS HAS FORKED" messages seemed to be appearing in the Console for lots of users, but referring to different things for different people.

Presumably that's because different people have different startup items installed.

I'd check that startup items folder every once in a while. I didn't install anything in there, but apparently some applications do it without asking.

Same problem here...

Purchased a C2Duo MacBook last Friday, July 11, migrated data from an older iMac at boot up, was able to enter/correct all the registration/user data using the keyboard; but after completion of that at login when the desktop appeared, the keyboard did not work, we had to use an external keyboard to make it type anything. Ran disk utility/permissions, and rebooted, no fix. Will run the software updates to see if that fixes anything. Will report back later today.

Am in touch with a local Apple Specialist and will replace the unit if needed.

I bought 2.4 GHz last week and withing two days keyboard and mouse would not respond to any stroke. Tried reboot and everything. Updated firmware (Using external mouse and keyboard). It was still frozen. I gave up for 10 mins. Came back and woken macbook up from sleep mode, everything was working. I still thought that I should call up apple support. The person Carl was very helpful and he asked me to perform resetting SMC. I did it (Mind you ate that time Keyboard and touch pad was responding). Anyway, I decided to return and asked for replacement. This is due in couple of days.

One thing noteworthy is that I installed iPhone development sdk (xcode) and ever since, my keyboard+touch pad are frozen (most of the time). It can be coincidence but could be suspect as well

So I'll wait for my new MacBook and do the same. If it still freezes, that will be my first and last encounter with macbook and it's family.

I am glad I am not the only one with this problem! Is the only solution to fix the keyboard and trackpad problem is to return it and get a new laptop? I tried to download the software update but that did not work and I tried to download the keyboard freezing update that it says I do not need it. My trackpad and keyboard freezes 30 minutes after turning on my computer and then i have to plug an external mouse in order to reboot the computer, then it will work for 30 minutes then freeze again! I am probably going to take it in to the MAC authorized dealer to see if they can fix it..

Apparently the best thing to do is chop the MB in six pieces and pile it all together. Than when you have your six pieces you gonna have to get rid of them cuz its no good living it in the trash for your mom to find it, now is it? Then I hear the best thing to do is put it in a fire. You gonna have to remove major metal parts for the sake of easy burning. You can do this afterwards of course, but you don't wanna go sieving through ash now do you? You gonna need a temperature of at least 310 degrees Fahrenheit and it will melt it in about 10 minutes, hence the slang: "Hot".

My Key board and mouse freezes on my Mc book Pro since the update. I went to the "genius" who said he wasn't aware of the problem (kind of difficult to believe since it's all over the net) and "of course" he couldn't fix it..... Anyway, I found out that the less elements I have on my desk top the less the problem occurs ! Try to figure this out !
Why Mac is not communicating with this problem at all?

I was having the same issues with my MacBook Pro for the past few weeks. I took it in 3 times - the first time they moved me back to 10.5.1 - that didn't work. The second time they took out my memory and put it back in thinking it could be bad. That seemed to work for a few hours, but the keyboard and trackpad started freezing again a few hours later. Finally the 3rd time they checked it in and ended up replacing a bad cable. They said they noticed the LED light at the front of the MBP was not lighting up, so they checked it out and decided that the cable was bad. So if you are having this issue, check to see if your LED light is working. The part they replaced is part #922-8045 (Flex Assy HDD/IR/SIL). My MBP was not under warranty, but they still covered the part and labor. Since the replacement, the LED is working again and no more keyboard/trackpad freezes!
