How does one create a playlist folder manually on the iPod classic (160)? I originally had my iPod sync'ed to my computer (playlist folders at that time were transferred over). I've since changed it to manually manage my music, and I can't figure out how to create a playlist folder on the iPod itself. The ones that were originally transferred over when it was synced are still there and work normally, but I can't create any more. Any help is much appreciated!
Playlist "folders" (which are now supported for the iPod) can't be created on the iPod directly. They have to be created in iTunes and added to the iPod from there.
You can however create "on-the-go" playlists directly on the iPod but I don't think that's what you mean.
Yes, that's apparent that I can't create one directly on the iPod. But still, I can't create a folder in iTunes and drag it over, either - it just puts the playlists within the folder onto my iPod. This must be an oversight, no?
You should be able to create a folder in iTunes, then drop different playlists into that main folder then sync this to the iPod. Or drag it if you have manual set.
Now, when you go to the playlist menu on the iPod, you should first of all see the main folder.
Then if you select that, you should see a list of all the different playlists within that main folder.
Yes - that's exactly what I want. However, when I drag the folder over into the iPod (I manually manage my music), only the playlists within that folder get moved to the iPod, and not the folder itself. So I can't see the folder in my iPod's playlist menu, just the playlists I created (in the main list).
Basically, yes. Here's an example: let's say I have two playlists ("most played" and "least played", for example) in a folder called "Play-Based Playlists" in iTunes. When I drag the folder "Play-Based Playlists" over onto my iPod (classic, 160GB, manually managed music) and let go, what happens is that I end up with two playlists ("most played" and "least played") on my iPod, but no folder. The two playlists just get dumped into the main playlist directory, with no folder.
Sorry - a correction: when the folder is dragged onto the iPod, I end up with
one playlist called "Play-Based Playlists" (that's right - a playlist, not a playlist folder), which contains
all of the tracks on the two playlists that were in the original folder.
I've tried dragging a folder with both Smart Playlists and Regular Playlists onto the iPod, but every time, I end up with just one playlist with the folder's name, and no folder. This is really frustrating!
In iTunes, use the file/new folder menu to create a folder and I called it "Main Playlist".
Then I used the file/new playlist menu to create several playlists which I called "60's music", "Jazz Rock", "Blues". I filled those playlists with music then dragged them to the "Main Playlist" folder. Now those playlists all show up listed under the main playlist folder in iTunes.
Or, you can click on that "Main Playlist" folder and use the file/new playlist menu and the playlists you then create are added to the folder automatically.
I transferred that "Main Playlist" folder to my Classic.
Now, when I select playlists from the music menu on the iPod, the first thing I see is an item called "Main Playlist" with the number of songs that folder contains in total.
If I select that I then see a list of the other playlists that folder contains i.e. 60's music, Jazz Rock and Blues. I can then select any of these playlists in order to play what they contain.
If you do that and it doesn't work for you, then I don't know why.
Wow. That's exaclty what I want to do. But it doesn't work - I just end up with
one playlist called "Main Playlist" (containing all the Jazz Rock, Blues, etc songs), and no folder.
Very strange.... I wonder if it has something to do with there being playlist folders already on my iPod from an earlier sync - ie, there's a bug because of that. I'm tempted to delete the earlier folders and see if I can't basically start from scratch, but at the same time, I don't want to lose what I've already got.
Thanks for at least confirming with me that it should "in theory" work... Btw, what operating system? I've tried this on both XP and Vista.
In Windows is impossible to drag and drop a playlist from iTunes to iPod, you can't, neither a folder. Only is possible to create a playlist into the iPod (select the iPod and File -> New playlist). I'm too interested in a playlist tree but looks is imposible using Windows.
Sorry, i'm stupid and tried to drag and drop emty playlists. Playlists with songs, works.
But still i can't add a folder to the iPod. I did what you said but doesn't work. I created one folder with 2 playlists and add some songs to each one, then drag and drop the folder to the iPod but when i look in the iPod i only have one playlist with the name of the folder that contains all the songs together. Don't know if i'm doing something wrong.
