Create Playlist Folder

How does one create a playlist folder manually on the iPod classic (160)? I originally had my iPod sync'ed to my computer (playlist folders at that time were transferred over). I've since changed it to manually manage my music, and I can't figure out how to create a playlist folder on the iPod itself. The ones that were originally transferred over when it was synced are still there and work normally, but I can't create any more. Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks
james.

I've created quite a lot of playlists; they're mostly chunks of classical CDs. What I want to do is to be able to create "programs" consisting of multiple playlists. To do this, I wanted to drag playlists into a "program" and retain the name of the playlist within the "program". I didn't think the folder feature would do what I wanted so I ended up dragging playlists into a new playlist which doesn't retain the names of the component playlists. If I can play a folder on my ipod, this would give me exactly what I want. So, can I play a folder or is it just an organizational tool?

I have a 160GB classic which I use on both windows XP and OS X. After the large hard disk capacity, the ability to organise playlists into folders and sub folders is the main reason I got this iPod.

It just doesn't work all all. I can't create a playlist folder directly on the ipod. And like poptramp is saying - if I create the playlist folder in the itunes library and then drag it onto the ipod, all the playlists are combined into a single playlist with the songs in alphabetical order. This single playlist has the name of the playlist folder.

This happens on both windows and OS X with iTunes 7.5 and ipod firmware 1.0.2

There really needs to be a fix for this. You need to be able to create your own structure for navigating a collection of 36,000 songs. Enourmously long lists that show all the artists (2000+) or all the albums (4000+) are very tedious and inconvenient.

Sorry - I wasn't explaining what I was doing too clearly. When I say "create a playlist folder directly on the ipod" I am trying to do it using iTunes. I click on the iPod in the iTunes devices side panel. I choose "New folder" from the file menu in iTunes, and it just creates a new folder in the "Playlists" section of the iTunes library, not in the iPod section.

I should also mention that I am manually managing my music, not doing any kind of automatic syncing.

But this is how it's supposed to work. The folder is created in the iTunes library and then transferred to the iPod.

I have the iPod set to auto sync so maybe this doesn't work when the iPod is set to manual transfer. I'll experiment later because at the moment I do not want to change my setting.

Maybe you could try changing to auto?

Fwiw my iTunes is version 7.5 and the iPod software is 1.0.2.

I have a fairly large music library (9000+ songs) and was receiving error messages when trying to sync my entire library for the first time (disk not found/available). I did some research and found that the problem is the iPod Classic not handling large file transfers properly. I switched to manual mode to transfer all of my files a little bit at a time, but ran into the same issue you've been having when trying to transfer playlist folders manually. After a bit of experimenting, I've discovered that there is a deceptively easy solution to the problem.

After you've transferred all of your music to your iPod manually, simply change your iPod's sync options back from manual to auto. If there are files you don't want synced, make sure the option for syncing only checked music is on, and go through your library un-checking the tracks that you don't want synced.

When you change your sync options you will receive a notice saying that all of your iPod's music will be deleted and replaced with content from the library; this is only partially true – files that you've transferred to your iPod manually will not be affected as long as the corresponding tracks in the iTunes library are checked for sync. This may pose a problem for people who transfer files from multiple libraries, but for most people this is a non-issue.

Go ahead and auto-sync your library with your iPod. When the process is finished (it should be fast since you're not adding anything new except for your playlists) you can go back to manual mode, but your playlist folders will remain on the iPod.

Hope this information helps you. I left my iPod on auto-sync after I finished since I only needed manual mode to complete the initial file transfer – auto-sync works fine for me when syncing small amounts of data.
