Problem with Option GlobeSurfer iCon 7.2 software on Mac

Hi =)

I just purchased an Option GlobeSufer iCon 7.2 package from Orange (in Switzerland). The sotware installed correctly, however, I get an error message every single time I try to launch the software in order to connect to the Internet. The error message says: "The application GlobeTrotter Connect quit unexpectedly". It then offers the option to "Relaunch" or "Ignore" or "Report to Apple". Relaunching the application results in the same error message.

I did disable the PIN (using my mobile phone).

Is there any way to connect to the USB modem without using their software?

Any thoughts?

Thank you. Dominique

When running the installation, if I click on "Customize", I see:

OQCPantherDriver (Skip - cannot select)
OQCTigerInstaller (Install - cannot deselect)
GlobeTrotter Connect (Install - cannot deselect)

So definitely not compatible with Leopard, I presume.

Still waiting for their response. But I guess that without a patch, it's going to be a no-go.

And here is the answer I received from Option:

*************************

We are sorry to inform you that there is no available application for the option device to work properly on the Mac OS Leopard yet. The application is being developed but there is no official release date available at this moment.

Dominique,

I am using the AT&T / Cingular version of their card. I had the Globetrotter Software installed when I upgraded to 10.5. It stopped working too, just like you described. I noticed a new icon on the top right of the screen that looks like the signal bars on a cell phone but very faint. I clicked and saw turn AT&T Card on! So I clicked it and then clicked connect. There I was all connected without doing anything.

I guess it is now built into 10.5. I did not remove the Globetrotter software to get this to work but after I found out I was successfully connecting I removed the software. Let me tell you - for me it works great!!

I don't know if Orange will work that way but maybe this will help you.

Good Luck!!

Hi

Sorry for the belated reply. I just returned the entire package to Orange, got a refund and canceled my subscription.

I will just have to wait until the operators (I tried 2 so far - no go) here in Switzerland and/or the hardware companies have updated the software to be compatible with Leopard.

Argh. Patience is a virtue.

I am hoping that someone will have something running before Xmas, as I will be spending 1 month in Australia and would like to be able to connect to send/receive email, even if in remote areas where no other connections are possible.

Have a nice day. Dominique =)

Hi, I have an Option Icon2 USB modem supplied by Orange in the UK. The modem worked fine with 10.4 using the supplied software and as with others upgrading to Leopard broke the software!

However, I now have the modem working within Leopard with no problems at all, this is what I did;

1. installed Globetrotter software originally in 10.4 hence modem scripts already installed
2. on network system preferences I selected the Globetrotter Location that is created by the original software install and deleted the GlobeTrotter devices other than the Globetrotter HSDPA Modem
3. selecting the Globetrotter HSDPA Modem as the active device in the window that shows Airport, Ethernet etc. typed in my apn name into the telephone number field for the modem and left the account name and password blank
4. on the advanced tab for the modem selected Other as the vendor and Option GlobeTrotter 3G as the model
5. on the advanced tab error connection and compression is enabled and dial mode is Wait for dial tone, dialing is tone

Then all you need to do is hit connect on the network pane and it works fine. You can show the modem status in the menu bar and when the USB modem is attached you can simply connect it from the menu bar.

Hope this helps, Phil

Hi,

I've received a message from Option support.

They are working on an updated version of their driver that supports 10.5.X but they don't provide any release date 😟

If you are ready to spend some money to make your modem work, you can have a look to launch2net from Novamedia http://www.novamedia.de/epages/e_produkte_macl2n.html
It is quite expansive (75EUR for a single license), but it works with a lot of modems (including option globesurfer serie)/phones and is (already) compatible with Leopard.

I hope it will help 😉

The APN is the Access Point Name and it's used to determine how you communicate via the mobile network, someone else here may be able to provide a more detailed description.

You should be able to get the name of the APN from your mobile provider, in the UK for Orange 3G+ connections then the name of the APN is internetvpn so you simply type that into the phone number field as opposed to an actual number.

Regards, Phil
