"Cannot decode raw data" error on safari

Hi,

I've been using Safari 3 that came installed with Leopard. Whenever I try to load a page from Flickr, I receive an error:

Safari can’t open the page.
Safari can’t open the page “ http://www.flickr.com/photos/...”. The error was: “cannot decode raw data” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1015) Please choose Report Bugs to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.

I've done a search on this on the error on these forums and with google and haven't turned up anything. Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

Thank you very much for your help!

Stephen

I started getting it on gmail, google news and some others soon after my institution installed a FortiGate 1000A firewall. This firewall caches incoming files until they are fully downloaded, checks them for viruses and then passes them along.

It also apparently alters them in some way that Safari chokes on, because Firefox is not bothered -- and I sometimes have less difficulty at low-traffic times, as has been reported here.

Here's hoping an Apple software engineer will read this and do something to clear Safari's throat.

I finally got tired of resetting Safari when searching ebay and tried looking here. I had no idea this problem has existed for so long without being resolved or even addressed by Apple. I thought perhaps it was a newer issue.

Hey APPLE BOZOS, wake up and fix this problem. It's very difficult to recommend an obviously flawed system to potential PC converts, flashy and humorous TV ads aside.

But then I suppose everyone is too busy trying to finish the embarrassing "Me" upgrade and the equally disastrous iphone 3G issues. Way to go guys!

same here - ebay.co.uk consistent offender, random -1015 errors (and very unhappy spouse wanting to go back to windoze)

from a google / forums scans, it seems that
- this could be related to gzip compression on server side
- clearing cache / resetting safari >might< fix things (however, from the inconsistent nature of the error, this could be more fluke)
- despite it being on the radar for a least a couple of years, looks like noones in a rush to fix (prob coz apple blames ebay / vice-versa for not following the RFC/Manaul 😉
- I best set up an ebay shortcut in Firefox, before me missus gets really peed off..

Since this problem has existed for months (through at least a couple Safari update) the only workaround is to use Firefox for eBay. I get this error so frequently (on all my machines) that it's not worth the effort to log in with Safari.
The problem seems to be more that eBay writes poor code, but you'd think Apple would be more proactive in fixing use for a site that most every Safari user has visited. Problem might be business-related (Apple-MS-eBay). Interesting given how widespread the problem is that Apple is staying so quiet.
