My Macbook Pro has starting doing this thing where the screen will go darker and it will tell me I need to restart by holding the power button. It happens pretty often when the computer wakes up from being in sleep mode. What's the deal?
That's called a "kernal panic" and can be caused by many things. You can check the console log for clues (Utilities > Console). You can search the boards for some common causes that match your situation, or simply post the first 20 or so lines of the console log (after a crash) in here and someone may be able to interpret for you.
I've heard a common way to get kernal panics is from using Azureus or a different Torrent client. Are you downloading torrents with Azureus open?
I'm asuming you aren't. Maybe a reset of the PRAM could help (Hold R
P+OptionCommand and wait for three startup 'chimes'). Try repairing permissions in Disk Utility.
I have Azureus, but it is never running when I have the Kernal Panics. In fact, I deleted it and I am still getting them. I tried the PRAM thing, but nothing happened, and I have already repaired the disc permissions. Lord this is so agitating XD
Okay, not only is this happening, but I have noticed some other issues. I use my Blackberry Pearl as a bluetooth modem at work. I have it synced to my Macbook Pro, and connect to the internet through my Blackberry's internet. I haven't had a problem with it until I started using Leopard. It seems like it want to stop working every so often, and when I try to disconnect it will not work. It just keeps saying "Disconnecting." Also, a lot of times my bluetooth keyboard will randomly lose it's connection (With full battery power) or a USB port will stop working until I restart my computer. Also, sometimes finder will freak out and freeze or just not work. This is fairly new Macbook Pro (I got it in June) and most of these problems started coming up at the 10.4.10 update, then got a lot worse with the Leopard update. It is a legal version of Leopard, so I don't know what the problem could be.
Same Problem here: never had a similar Problem before installing Leopard. Since installing Leo: After first Wake from sleep (wfs): the left usb port with my Logitech mouse (no additional logitech Software installed, only genuine apple drivers) doesn.work anymore. Problem can only be solved by restarting the MBP. If i do not restart: after second WfS: right usb port is deactivated, computer frozen, keyboard not working and i can only solve it by unpluggin Power und taking out the Battery (=Crashrestart...).
Happens all the time, must be related to leo. Is extremely annoying.
Similar problems. Was on mac os X 10.4. Had battery problems (the cross through the battery icon, no charging...). Had my pack of two batteries changed by the apple store. Standard replacement. Still have these problems, but intermittently after sleep. Now since leopard I have a new problem after sleep: keyboard is not responding, again intermittently. I have to push on a key for about 10 sec to get it back to work. This way, it works for some minutes and then again stop responding, etc... Workaround is to reboot the machine. In two words, the sleep function is inoperable.
Alright, the problem seems to be getting worse and more frequent. Now, things using the bluetooth on my MacBook Pro will randomly stop working, and sometimes the computer will freeze up when trying to connect to something via bluetooth. I'd really like some help here.
I can confirm this problem on a brand new MBP with an upgrade install of 10.5.1 over the factory fresh 10.4.11 install. Waking from sleep results in random "dead" USB devices and intermittent or failed Bluetooth support. Once a USB port hosting a device goes dead on wake, only a reboot restores it. And Bluetooth seems to work for a moment after wake, then goes off the air.
This is very clearly a 10.5.x problem as I used the machine with 10.4.11 through several reboot and sleep/wake cycles with exactly the same hardware config and no problems at all.
Furthermore, there are random network lock-ups and half the time applications hang up when quitting and have to be force quit. From my perspective 10.5.1 is a huge step backwards in reliability and something needs to be done about these issues (which seem suspiciously related) ASAP.
Here's a console log detailing a wake sequence with failed Bluetooth and USB.

I'm using a brand new MBP with OSX 10.5.1. I updated from 10.4.x. I have had similar problems: whenever I put my MBP to sleep by closing the lid, I lose one of my USB ports (the left one). Additionally, much of the time, I can't wake the machine. The following have helped:
1. To get rid of the "not waking from sleep" problem (and this has been documented elsewhere), in the Energy Saver system prefs tool, go to Options and unclick "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep". Since doing this I have not had the non-awakening problem.
2. Don't put the machine to sleep by closing the lid. Put it to sleep from the Apple menu and wait for it to completely go to sleep and till the fan stops. Then close it. Since doing this routinely (and yes it's a pain), I haven't had the lost USB port problem.
I've also noticed since installing Leopard that full sleep (fan off) takes a lot longer than it did with 10.4.x. It takes nearly 1 minute instead of seconds. Clearly some growing pains for Leopard.
Are you using a logitech mouse? I had the same issue. The problem is with Logitech's driver. In your log, it says the current thread is "LCCDaemon" meaning the Logitech Control Center Daemon. Sadly, the only way to solve the problem is to uninstall the Logitech software, or hope a future software update will fix the problem.
I too have a new MBP and updated from tiger to 10.5.1. My left USB port would be dead on wake with a mouse plugged in it if I woke the computer any other way than by moving the mouse around. Only a reboot would bring back the port. If I have the mouse plugged into the right port then no problems and sleep and wake by any method worked. I tried stock drivers, imac mouse, logitech mouse and logitech drivers and all behaved the same way. What I did until apple has a fix is to disable the bluetooth which solved my sleep and wake problems totally. Disabling bluetooth was suggested by apple in another post and for me it worked.
I am having the same problems here. I have a new MBP 2.2Ghz running 10.5.1 I did not do a clean install but migrated all my software Adobe CS3, ms office, parallels, etc. over. Everything seemed to work fine on 10.5 but now on 10.5.1 my keyboard freezes on waking from sleep. The only temporary fix is holding down any key for 5-10 seconds, which is better than restarting, but I have found that I have to do this over and over again every time I switch apps. Not Fun.
