Macbook Pro needs restart after sleep...

My Macbook Pro has starting doing this thing where the screen will go darker and it will tell me I need to restart by holding the power button. It happens pretty often when the computer wakes up from being in sleep mode. What's the deal?

Mac OS X (10.5)

... I have experienced this problem also. I have contacted Apple Service with no success, except the fairly generic advice to reinstall the OS and see what happens. (I did not) I have found the answer to the problem, that may cause the freezes.

I have moved the MBP to a different location, away from any magnetic field, e.g. desk lamps often have a transformer for their light bulbs, supplementary screens sometimes have transformers built in.

As my MBP works perfectly, goes to sleep, wakes up, no matter how many applications are open, I am convinced that this may be a little hardware "weakness" with shielding of / protecting from magnetic fields. You may want to try this, if it works for you. Fyi I have switched from WIN to MAC, I could not be happier. :o)

I did a wipe and install and then migrated my old data from my backup.

Ever since then, my new MBP has been extremely erratic when waking from sleep and I have experienced long delays consistently but each time, the amount of time it takes to get my machine awake seems to be anywhere from a minute to 2 or 3. It seems to start to wake up, then, if I don't touch another key, it might never wake up. If I tap a key many times, it eventually awakes.

And the keyboard goes dead every once in a while and ALWAYS after waking from sleep.

Last week, I was getting my MBP to communicate with my bluetooth headset and it scrambled the prefs so bad, the machine would not run. Kept getting the frozen cursor that would respond every few minutes and only for a second. Even after multiple reboots I would see the same problem. Finally solved that by trashing my prefs and replacing them from my backup.

Apple, you must know there is an issue here. Now fix it. you are causing many people a great deal of aggravation.

Yes, this is a known issue with Leopard, and word is that Apple is working on a fix. (fingers crossed) It occurs most frequently when waking a MacBook Pro from sleep in closed-lid mode when connected to an external display, but appears to be possible whenever waking from sleep with USB devices are attached. See:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1220488&tstart=0

FYI, Apple doesn't read the forum or respond here, so if you're having this issue, be sure to let them know via their feedback page:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

The Logitech driver issue is also very real, but is a separate one.

Good to know I am not alone here. Just got my machine two weeks ago and been having this problem on and off. Just sent this bug report to Apple to prod them along. Note the similarities between my setup and that of others posting in this forum.

For the past couple of weeks, I have had a number of crashes of my new macbook pro when trying to wake it from sleep. I have been reading the forums at the apple site and my problem is not unique (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1220488&tstart=0). It is apparently a kernel panic related to the USB interface. Like most users reporting this problem, I have the laptop connected to a cinema display via an ADC to DVI adapter. The computer is a 2.2 Ghz model running Leopard 10.5.1. An apple USB keyboard was connected through the display as was a logitech mouse. A firewire HD was connected the last time it crashed, but not the previous times. Based on reading the forums, I have connected the peripherals directly to the macbook pro and disconnected the USB interface from the display. I also updated the logitech drivers and turned off the bluetooth. Supposedly these workarounds will solve the problem. However, I would like it to be fixed.

wow... I've had my machine (MBP 2.4ghz 4g OSX 10.4.11 TIGER) since August, and these "kernel" shut downs and sleep problems started about a month or two ago. I do use an external monitor via DVI to VGA converter. But that's been since day one. My problems started around the 10.4.10 or the 10.4.11 update. Around that time I also added an Apple USB ext keyboard (the new, slim version).
I'll check my log info and paste it here, when I'm with my MBP tonight. I do have a bunch of other things hooked up, and would like someone to help me look at this log info. No Logictech mouse... but I do have a Microsoft mouse.

It's now happening about 3 to 4 times a week. I'm so fustrated trying to search online for help... and also seeing people say that Apple isn't really offering a "fix" right now. I wanna stay with TIGER, so I hope the send out a patch for both Tiger and Leopard. I'm actually considering going back to PC over this. It's really crippling my work flow.

There's a fairly easy workaround: disconnect your USB devices from the computer before waking it up, and wake it from a keypress on the built-in keyboard rather than the external one. Hope that's enough to keep you from dumping your Mac entirely!

Having said that, we're all of course hoping for an honest-to-goodness fix from Apple soon.

hey thanks for the tip. This might work, sometimes.
However the crashes happen when it's going to sleep - mostly.
There's just no consistency

I'm just being drama queen... heheheh.
I don't wanna leave apple, just frustrated.

Here's my panic message:

Its been about a week since I connected all my USB peripherals directly into the MBP. No crashes since then. I know some in this forum have been using their setup with the laptop closed. I don't do that, so I haven't run into the problem that occurs in this scenario. But with laptop cover open, I have not had to disconnect anything before waking from sleep since last week.

Macbook Pro needs restart after sleep...
