Pixel Lines on Screen - only when backlight is on

I pre-ordered a Black 30GB Video iPod when I first heard about them.

For the past year, my iPod has stayed in mint condition because of my iPod sock. However I turned my iPod on the other day and there was 3 small lines in the middle of the screen.

There are no cracks on the front or back of iPod. Just pixelized lines on the screen.

They have grown each time my iPod has been turned on/off and they now stretch across the whole screen.

When the screen doesn't have a backlight, there are no lines viewable. When the light comes on they appear.

Anyone got any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks.

This problem affected of not once, but twice. In trying to solve it the first time (apply force to the affected areas) the problem went away, but i severely damaged the screen and now it has dead pixels (which are annoying but not as much as the line problem)
the screen line problem has struck again this year about a year after it first arised. Couple that with the dead pixels, and the fact i use my 5g for videos, and you have a viewing experience thats just as annoying as picking up a cable while wearing mittens.
However, i accidently came across another solution. If the ipod is not used for at least 3 days the problem fixes itself slightly. Mine stared to clear up slightly but i made the mistake of using it before 'treatment' was over.
tomorrow I am going to look at places that will replace my screen. All people seeing these black lines on their 5g's are encouraged to STOP USING THEM, and stowing them away safely for a few days. If it works, great, i finally solved a problem thats widespread like poverty. If not, I at least tried. I dont expect it to fully fix the problem, nor am i expecting it to actually work, but give it a try.
P.S. Might I also suggest leaving the ipod flat on its back. With mine, it seems to be affected by gravity.

Same problem. I just found my daughter's ipod (stuck in a drawer for the last few weeks - she thought she'd lost it) and since I do all the charging, updates, etc...I thought I'd add some of her music to it. I just turned it on for the first time in weeks, and there are those lovely thin black lines (two of them very close together near the bottom of the LCD). This ipod has been sitting in a sock drawer for a couple of months now...no airports, no updates, nothing like that. Just sitting. I'd like an apple reply too. This ipod is exactly 13 months old (of course 1 month out of warranty). 30G video Ipod.

No, it's bad enough to overspend on an mp3 player that's not going to last more than 13 mos, much less an over priced warranty. They'd only claim it was dropped and not cover it anyway. For what I paid for apple care on two iphones over the past 3 years I could purchased a whole new ipod. What I should have done was gotten a square trade warranty on it. The point is, these well treated-barely used-pampered pieces of equipment should last more than 13 months - if they don't, then there is a flaw in the design. If it's a design flaw or an apple problem - it should be fixed regardless of time lapsed. jmho

Well, I've just joined this particular club! I have a 30gb iPod 5th gen, and noticed these funny little lines on the screen a couple of days ago, which are very very similar to the pics in the very first post, and also look to be getting worse.

Had it for over 2 years now, so the warranty has well and truly expired. Well have to wait til I'm back in the UK to think about a possible repair - anyone know of any good recommended repairers?

OR

How hard/easy is it to fit a new screen yourself?

cheers.

My iPod (30G, black) does the same thing. I've had it for about 2 years now. If anyone has sent their iPod in to Apple, what have you gotten back?

a) the same EXACT iPod with a new screen
b) the same MODEL iPod, new/refurbished
c) an iPod Classic

I'm debating whether I send mine in or not, because beside the line, everything about the iPod works fine.

My 5th Gen 30GB 2 year old Ipod suddenly started showing a horizontal black bar across the screen just where the volume bar shows up,

- this happened when i tried charging the ipod through a wall charger -

My battery had completely blanked out and i kept it on charge overnight but to my horror when I put it back on the next day a black line showed across the screen. Over the last month the line has doubled in size and is suiggly in shape and increases every time i have a charge done. I feel i can almost calculate that the entire screen will be covered within next 10 charge cycles 😟 its so annoying that i cant see anything on the volume bar/ play status

Though not sure i think this has something to do with high voltage or power(not sure though)- as many have mentioned about ipod lying idle and airport scanners.

That Apple doesnt even bother to reply to so many customer posts is baffling to say the least. this is an outright issue with LCD and Sharp branded ones(?)

if not an outright replacement - discounted service charge for the fix is what they can offer.

Mr. Steve Jobs: You put great shows on innovation during product launches, how about some innovation in customer service - nokia did it for thier BLC5 batteries - take a leaf out of thier book and do us some favor please

An update.

After several weeks and the line gradually becoming bigger I rang Apple services and told them about my problem as my ipod was still under it's 12 month warrenty. Within two days UPS delivery picked up my ipod to take it supposedly for repair and three days later I recieved a brand new ipod classic as a replacement.

My Classic 80gig has started to get lines across the screen as well. After reading this thread, and especially the posts by nfts08, it's obvious that apple has used an inferior part in the affected iPods. I've had my iPod for a year now, and have always taken good care of it.

After Googling this issue, it appears to be a wide-spread problem, and am wondering if anyone has thought of a class-action suit against you-know-who. In the past, websites have been very effective in getting a**le to pay something back to customers who've had to replace bad parts. Is there such a site for this?
