Pixel Lines on Screen - only when backlight is on

I pre-ordered a Black 30GB Video iPod when I first heard about them.

For the past year, my iPod has stayed in mint condition because of my iPod sock. However I turned my iPod on the other day and there was 3 small lines in the middle of the screen.

There are no cracks on the front or back of iPod. Just pixelized lines on the screen.

They have grown each time my iPod has been turned on/off and they now stretch across the whole screen.

When the screen doesn't have a backlight, there are no lines viewable. When the light comes on they appear.

Anyone got any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks.

I am also having this problem. It started with one small line on the screen and it's rapidly multiplied and the lines are now extending across the entire screen. I have a 120G iPod Classic, purchased less than a year ago.

I am surprised that Apple hasn't replied at all to this thread in two years. Even to say 'We're looking into it', or some such would show that they have at least acknowledged the concerns of their consumers. It's very poor customer service and extremely disappointing. I'm beginning to think that in the future I'll have to avoid Apple products, for fear of their response, or lack thereof, to any problems that may occur.

Hello Guys, I'm another victim!
I can't believe this is happening with us all without ANY reply from apple.
I will avoid any apple products in the future and i suggest averyone here to do the same.
Yesterday i was talking with my wife to get a MacBook in the next notebook exchange.
NO WAY!
I also hate why IPOD'S don't have a simple DELETE function.
im tired to turn on my pc, connect the ipod wait the itunes routines to just delete one song!
this problem is worldwide im from Japan.
Next victim please...

hello, my 160gb ipod classic was just working fine (at least for the last 2 years) when i noticed those lines, they appeared today in the morning , at the beginning they were the half they are now... i thought pressing the middle button and menu button will fix the problem but it didn't, then i thought to restore it but i didn't wanted to loose all my music so i googled my problem and now i'm here... i've read all the advices and specially one worked for me, "massaging/rubbing" ipod's lcd (when its off), the lines look much smaller than before... anyway... lines are still there...

Same thing here, just happened a few days ago, I tried the rubbing thing. It seems more like its just clumping it together and moving it around. I may try leaving it on it's back for a few days but I use it so often! Grrr...

Also, this is outrageous that there hasn't been a recall yet. The one guy was saying the he repairs these all the time, their all Sharp and they all have the same problem, that's bounds for a recall right there. So come on apple, stop avoiding it and deal already.

I'm not sure about the weather affecting the screen. I've opened my Late 2006 5G iPod a few times (trying to fix the hard drive, the warranty had already expired). I don't know what the person who used the iPod did before me (well, a relative of mine found it on the streets and she decided to give it to me), but I've taken it outside in the winter (maybe about 24 degress fahrenheit) for about 10 minutes, and I've left it in my house (about 70 degrees), and no screen problems are occuring. I do think that this is a fault on Apple's part, but everyone who has an iPod (same gen as mine, except the earlier 5th gen) have not had this problem. So I dunno what to say, but it's just shocking how many people are having this problem. If we could just point someone from Apple to read this thread...

K, I read that the reason for this is a buildup of excess electrons, which is cause by a constant flow of information, which is very common when using a dock or car hookup, it can be simply fixed by leaving your ipod locked in sleep mode for 24 hours.

Idk that this is exactly what your experiencing, but i just put mine to sleep, hope it works.

Fixed!

Simply using your finger nail, press down hard on the screen over the black pixel lines and this will "smudge" them and even remove segments of the line. You need to press quite hard to smudge the lines, especially if they are near the edges of the screen. Once the lines have been "smudged", you willnotice that most of the lines have been erased, and that small clusters of the pixels will be left behind. Make sure your screen brightness is turned up to 100% and then go on to use the iPod normally. After a day or two (or three) the lines should have disappeared.

That's it! I did it on my iPod Classic 80GB and the screen is now black line free!

Ok, I haven't been having problems (as stated before), but, after dropping my calculator (TI-84 Plus), it's been getting some black lines on the screen, but not where info is displayed. To get rid of it, I usually press the plastic part near the screen where the problem is, and the line usually goes away. Dunno if this would help the iPod screen. Also, my iPod video isn't functioning (Recovery-mode loop), and it's losing reliability (the hard drive), so if I can't fix it on a Mac, I might sell it to anyone who needs a new screen. Also, emphasis on MIGHT, I may not sell it, I have to see

I have an ipod classic 80gig that has this same problem.

Weird thing is is that the black lines got worse, then two months later most of them mysteriously disappeared. Guess I got lucky.

After reading this forum I thought I might have to replace my screen, don't think I'm going to though. It's not that bad now.

I've had my ipod for three years now this is the first and only issue I've had with it.
