Pixel Lines on Screen - only when backlight is on

I pre-ordered a Black 30GB Video iPod when I first heard about them.

For the past year, my iPod has stayed in mint condition because of my iPod sock. However I turned my iPod on the other day and there was 3 small lines in the middle of the screen.

There are no cracks on the front or back of iPod. Just pixelized lines on the screen.

They have grown each time my iPod has been turned on/off and they now stretch across the whole screen.

When the screen doesn't have a backlight, there are no lines viewable. When the light comes on they appear.

Anyone got any ideas how to fix it?

What is the APPLE answer to this? I've been following these threads for months now. Everyone has their own view, partial fixes, hopes and prayers blah blah. What is the bottom line answer? If you don't have Apple Care are you SOL?

Yup, I've just joined this club today! My iPod seemed to make some funny noises earlier on... next thing I knew funny lines have appeared on the screen.

It's frankly disgusting that Apple have yet to even have the dignity to respond to it's loyal customers.

I had to force them to replace my laptop battery when that packed up before the 300+ loadcycles it should have gone through.

Disappointing and disgusting. Steve Jobs, get this sorted. Or give us an allowance towards a replacement iPod.

Oh, and my iPod was 3yrs and 5 days old when it started....

Funnily enough the headphones are sealed up, along with the covers that you put on them, and the box and iPod itself are like new. I've only carried it in the supplied soft cover, and used it with my car audio system.

I'm not one to bash Apple. I'm clearly a loyal customer who likes the product. But obviously something is VERY VERY wrong here. If this was GM or FORD, they would have to issue a recall. When are tech manufacturers going to have to start answering to quality issues the way other industries do like Autos, Airlines, etc.

We all know what the problem is, so I think we should stop posting how old our Ipods are or how big, color, etc, and start a class action against Apple. This is unacceptable.

I have two black lines on my 80GB ipod classic but it's not a hardware problem because they have shortened and some pixels that were black went back to normal.
I've actually watched as one line crossed the entire screen.

I have same same problem. The battery was very low, I put the iPod to charge and now there are lines. Did anyone actually find a solution? I've had my 60GB Classic for about 4 years and no problems until now....

Me too. Happened the second I popped my pod (5th gen 60GB) into a Philips dock.

Interestingly I was using a universal power adaptor rather than the one that came with the dock (which was a two-pin, rather than three), which backs up what some people have been saying about power problems.

erhaps airport scanners, dodgy power adaptors and plugging in an iPod that's not been used for weeks can all cause power spikes which kill some part of the screen?

I have the same problem on my Ipodtouch 3rg generation that I just got a couple of weeks ago.
I have a vertical line across the screen. I used a 3rd party charger from amazon (had great reviews) I wonder if this is the reason?
anyway, I will take my ipod to the apple store on satruday

I am having this exact same problem as well. I have a 60gb 5th Gen iPod; it is one of the original 5th Generation ones, so it's approaching its fifth year.

Now it's showing a line that started as a small reverse E and now spread across the entire volume control line. It is only visible with the backlight on.

Well here is one more unfortunate iPod user. After 7-8 days as I started my iPod to listen to some music I found these two little devilish line joined with a smaller jagged line. 😟

I hardly believe Apple is going to give us any solution. We the small customers are always expandable for these MNC (or more precisely profit mongers) and the idle promises are only for advertisement and corporate brochures.

My iPod 120GB classic started to do this recently and a Google search led me to this thread. This thread has been alive for 2 years now and still no response from Apple? Do you all just send in you iPod's for repair?

A temporary fix to the problem is to turn off your backlight through the settings. This will not allow "bleeding" of backlight, which causes this problem. Sorry, no full solution.
