Transfering files from 1400c to iBook and PC

I have a 1400c/166 running OS 8.0, a G4 iBook running OS 10.2, and a new PC running Windows XP. Also a SanDisk 512 MB memory stick.

The 1400c does not have ethernet.

I need to get 40 MB of mission critical email files off the 1400c and onto the PC.

Would love to find an adapter that will allow me to plug my little USB flash drive into the serial or SCSI ports in the back of my 1400c, but fear that must be way too simple to work.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

TA,

Welcome to the Discussions!

Unfortunately, the PB1400 cannot use any USB devices, period. You may see USB-to-serial cables but they are for USB-equipped computers which allow connecting an old serial device with the appropriate driver.

One approach you may consider is using a PC Card Adapter that takes various sizes of memory cards:

The 6-in-1 PC Card Adapter also supports the Memory Stick Pro.

Trey,

The SanDisk Cruiser Micro USB flash drive is a standalone device (like a USB HD), meaning it needs only a USB port to connect, and since it has a USB connector, it is not compatible with a PC Card Adapter.

Since I have never used the Memory Stick PRO, I can only go by the picture of it. It has no USB connector, one end looks to have a multi-pin connector, and the statement by SanDisk that the Stick PRO will work in the PC Card Reader.

TA, I have the same problem as you. I read responses to your query with interest but still don't know if I can transfer files from my PB1400cs OS 7.5.3 to a PC or my new iBook.

What about emailing files as attachments?

My spec sheet says Standard Ethernet is N/A on my 1400. Does this mean the PCMCIA--Ethernet card will not work (suggested by AppleFreak)?

Walt,

Dennis has given you the solution for adding Ethernet to the 1400. However, if your new iBook is running Tiger/10.4.x, you will not be able to employ File Sharing via a direct Ethernet connection between the iBook and 1400. If the 1400 had OS 9.0 > 9.1 installed, this would be possible.

Even though your iBook does not have a PCMCIA card slot, you could buy a USB memory card reader for the iBook, a PC Card Adapter for the 1400, and swap the appropriate memory card between the two.

Or you could buy a USB floppy drive for the iBook and swap files via a floppy disk.

Both the USB floppy drive and USB memory card reader should also work on a PC with the appropriate software for the card reader. However, you would have to format a floppy disk or memory card as MS-DOS (Fat 32) if you were to swap files between a Mac and PC; the Mac can natively read MS-DOS format.

If the files are relatively small, email would certainly be the easiest.

An even better bet (that I use regularly) is a camera memory card. (Compact Flash, Smart Media, Secure Digital, Memory Stick, pick one you like.)

Get a PCMCIA reader for the PowerBook 1400c, and a USB reader for the iBook and PC.

Format it in FAT16 format (should come formatted that way anyway,) and PC Exchange on the PowerBook will read it no problem, and OS X and the PC can read it natively just fine.

I've used this to transfer large files to my PowerBook 1400cs and PowerBook 5300c many times. Sony 128 MB Memory Stick, Sony MSAC-US1 USB adapter for my eMac and PC, and Sony MSAC-PC2 PCMCIA adapter for my PowerBooks.

Another option is to get a PCMCIA Ethernet adapter, and use the Mac OS file sharing to get it to the iBook. (I've also used that method.) Heck, you can even get an 802.11b (a.k.a. 'WiFi' or AirPort) card to work in the 1400.

Hi all

Good topic and responses.

I have the same situation, but in reverse.
I have a PC laptop running Windows ME and I want to transfer files off it to an eMac running Tiger 10.4. The files are mainly MP3's, and Music Videos (MPEG and AVI ), but some are as big as 356mbs. I don't want transfer anything from the eMac to the PC.

The Laptop has USB ports, but no Ethernet port. I have a D LINK Fast Ethernet USB 2.0 Adapter DUB-E100, that I use to connect the PC to my cable modem.

If worse comes to worse, can I use the Fast Ethernet Adapter to connect the eMac with the PC via Ethernet crossover cable?

But I'd have to get software for them to understand and communicate right? I couldn't transfer files over, like I did between the Macs ..or could I?

I'm hoping I don't have to go the Networking route again. I just did it with my Macs, and it was educational, but frustrating. I'd rather not go there again, especially when a PC is involved.

So I'm hoping I'm I can use the memory/flash/card ideas posted here, sounds like a good way to go.

<<Get a PCMCIA reader for the PowerBook 1400c, and a USB reader for the iBook and PC.>>

Would the above recommendation be the same, in a reverse situation? Would the PCMCIA reader be applicable for PC laptop. or would the PC USB Port be used?
I have a credit card size slot on this PC is that where the PCMCIA reader goes? Is it that credit card shaped thing, with ports on one side?
Is a USB reader, the same as a media card reader?

BTW you can transfer files between Tiger 10.4 and OS 8.5 and 9.x.
I did it with my G3 and eMac.

It wasn't easy, being new to OSX, networking and file sharing.
I had to do alot of reading and research There were trials and errors with different configurations and settings changes, on both computers.
I still don't really understand some aspects of it, but I did finally network my eMac and G3.

The file transferring was slow. It took over 20 hours, to transfer 80+ gbs from the G3 to the eMac, but I think it was due to the slow G3 processor, bus, and SCSI speeds, not Ethernet. When I transferred those 80gbs from the eMac to an Ext FW HD, it took a little more than an hour.

Thank You,
Deb

I was searching all the discussions for "PC and Mac file sharing" and saw this topic. I posted a reply here because of the PC file sharing and because it involved laptops. When I read the replies, I was excited to know that networking wasn't the only way to get files transferred between a PC and Mac, and I posted a response based on that.

After I posted it, I saw the computer category the original post was under, and realized I what I had done.

I apologize, for that.
