Since your Global Village software came on floppies, it probably does not have the latest updates for OS9. Go to this site and see if you need the update files.

The updates you need for OS 9 fit on disks(3).IF you've got a CD-burner(PC or Mac) you can download them,burn a slow-speed ISO 9660 CD with the files unchanged(PC is Nero data disk) and transport them to your 5300(you need Stuffit on 5300!).
You also can transport them via PC-disks(unchanged as well!) to your 5300.
Don't get frustrated.
You also can try to use an OS beyond 9 on your 5300 to get the PC Card work,then downloading needed files,copy to disks(with Disk Copy 4.2 or 6.x) and upgrade then.

Just a quick question: Do you have the 'PC Card Modem Extension' in your Extensions folder or is it listed in your Extensions Manager? If it is not present, the modem-side of your combo card will not work. From my experience, this extension is not normally installed by default.

If missing, you can custom install it from your 9.x CD; it is found in the Mobility folder in the System Folder.

When Apple updated to 9.x, it apparently broke GV's Global Fax which is a part of the whole software package. Now whether modem connectivity and/or Ethernet connectivity was affected along with the fax software I just don't know, but I suspect that is the case. I have read of 1400s running this software (latest version) with OS 9.1 so theoretically it should work.

Do you have the third-party Conflict Catcher installed? If so, disable in the Extensions Manager, restart and test.

When you open your AppleTalk control panel, do you see the "Alternate Ethernet" option?

I would say your next step is to somehow download and install the GV software. Please tell us what computer(s) you are using and if you have any access to a floppy drive.

I am hoping you have a working floppy drive on one of your 5300s. If this is the case, proceed as follows:

1. Download the two disk image files of the 3.0.6 Updater:

2. Download the GV PC Card Enablers Update Version 1.0.7 (a.k.a Updated Enablers for OS 9):

3. Not sure about this: "The latest update for your modem firmware is version 1.511 and is included in the 3.0.2 Updater." You can check your firmware version by clicking on the "How to check your current modem firmware version" in the link below. I am guessing that GV also included the firmware update in the 3.0.6 Updater but they do not say. The ZTerm utility should be in your GV folder.

4. Once you have downloadedon your iMac, drag-copy each file to a 1.4MB floppy disk and transfer them to your 5300's HD. I am not sure, but you may have set your browser or Stuffit Expander to automatically open compressed files...you don't want this to happen on your iMac. If using Internet Explorer, go to IE's Preferences > Download Options > uncheck the auto decoding of BinHex and MacBinary files.

5. You said you don't have Stuffit Expander on your 5300. Perform a search with Sherlock under Apple menu for 'expander'. Do the same on your iMac.

6. You should have three files on your 5300's desktop...(2) .img files and (1) .sit file. Use Stuffit Expander to decode the files and just follow the instructions of the expanded files. According to GV, you want to run the 3.0.6 Update before running the Enablers Update Version 1.0.7.

Regarding any downloaded files that have the (.img) suffix: These can be handled with Apple's Disk Copy 6.3.3 (or earlier). You can download it, put it on a floppy disk and transfer it to the 5300. This file comes as a 'self-mounting image' (.smi) file so all you have to do is double-click the icon to mount it on the desktop. Once mounted, drag the Disk Copy utility to your Utilities folder.

The 'GV PC Card Enablers Update.sit' download should still fit on a floppy disk when expanded, so double-click on this file while still on your iMac, then drag the contents (should be a folder) to a floppy disk.
