Leopard Font Organization

I did a standard upgrade when installing Leopard and I noticed some font issues shortly thereafter. I've sorted some of it out already, but my main question is how are fonts organized in Leopard? I'm finding fonts spread about and I'm still have a few duplicate font issues.

I believe 'Library >> Fonts' should be the default, but what about these:

- 'System >> Library >> Fonts'
- 'System >> Library >> Frameworks >> ApplicationServices.Framework ....(gets deeper)... Protected Fonts

I guessing some of these should have been consolidated and/or deleted upon upgrade.

Font Book is indicating some duplicates, but I'm having trouble finding them all. No fonts exist in the user directories and a search comes up empty handed. Also, I have not yet installed any third party fonts which I usually do by creating a unique library. Any suggestions?

problem with that is the dfont version of helvetica neue will be active and so is going to get used in Quark or Indesign, which is bad news because dfont should be avoided,

But you can specifically select the PostScript version of Helv Neue from inside InDesign (and, I assume from inside Quark), so even if they're both active, it's not a problem (tho it is somewhat annoying).

In a prior posting in this thread I detailed how I keep all of my non-system fonts within folders located in Library/Fonts, each folder containing all of the fonts from a given source, the sources being Adobe, iLife, iWork, Leopard, and Microsoft. (In my earlier posting the folder "Leopard" was at that time named "Apple".) There are some duplicate fonts from folder to folder but these have all be resolved.

I also have seven accounts on my system, one administrator account and six user accounts. None of these accounts have any fonts kept in user/Library/Fonts. The result is that exactly the same fonts are available regardless of which account is currently in use.

An oddity I am experiencing is that the list of fonts appearing in the "English" library have some variance in the different accounts, although the count for a given account does remain constant.

My question then is.....

Is the variance just mentioned a bug in Font Book, or is there something I am missing? Is there anything I can do to make the count consistent across all accounts? I guess I'm one of those that becomes concerned when what I perceive as odd and/or inconsistent behavior is occurring.
